  • Biomass Fuel Project
    The UI Power Plant has pioneered a unique and innovative source of biomass fuel. A partnership with Quaker Oats Cedar Rapids Plant provides an economical, environmentally friendly source of fuel-- oat hulls. More...

    The Building Commissioning Program ensures buildings operate to optimal designed conditions. New buildings will be initially commissioned, and existing buildings will be routinely re-commissioned, in order to minimize energy consumption.

  • LEED Sustainable Design
    The University of Iowa incorporates green principles in the placement, design and construction of new campus facilities and major renovation projects, maintaining a minimum standard of LEED Silver certification for new construction and major renovations. Facilities Management construction and renovation projects also use the UI’s comprehensive Design Standards & Procedures to ensure energy conservation is designed into new and renovated projects.   • Recycling & Waste Reduction
    Students, faculty and staff at The University of Iowa actively participate in the comprehensive recycling program on campus which includes paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum containers, and conscientiously work to reduce the amount of material sent to landfill. More...

  • Vehicle Fleet
    Facilities Management has purchased electric vehicles for a trial program for a “green” fleet. The vision is to eventually convert more than 50% of Facilities Management’s fleet vehicles. Some departments are currently evaluating electric vehicles for the service fleet.

  • Wind Turbine
    A 2.4kW wind turbine stretching approximately thirty-seven feet tall has been installed in front of the Madison Street Services Building. The turbine is intended to be used as a teaching tool, but Facilities Management will also use the power it generates on campus. More...
