Jay Obernolte Interview
This interview deals primarily with Action 52 and Sports 5, two of Jay Obernolte's works. However a few questions are also asked about Color A Dinosaur, a game which Jay had worked on for the Nintendo (NES) while at Virgin.
Cheetahmen Corner: Where did you get the idea for Color a Dinosaur? As we had mentioned earlier, the game concept is something quite unique.
Mr. Obernolte: "Virgin (the publisher) created the concept and hired us to write it. The game was actually quite a technical challenge, given the limitations of the NES hardware."
Cheetahmen Corner: What were your thoughts when working on Color a Dinosaur? Did you ever feel like doing something different, such as frogs or trucks or something?
Mr. Obernolte: "Nope- I love dinosaurs."
Cheetahmen Corner: Did you like the end product with Color A Dinosaur?
Mr. Obernolte: "I thought it turned out to be a nice product. I was happy with it when it shipped."
Cheetahmen Corner: We have been hearing rumors that you had worked for Active Enterprises on their Action 52 game for the Sega Genesis. Is there any basis to this rumor or is it totally bogus?
Mr. Obernolte: "It's true, we did Action 52 on the Genesis."
Cheetahmen Corner: If the above rumor is true, do you know anything about who was responsible for the development of the NES version of Action 52?
Mr. Obernolte: "Active Enterprises (the publisher) developed the NES version internally. It was already shipping when we started the Genesis development."
Cheetahmen Corner: Did you work on any NES games that had never made production, games that had gone unreleased?
Mr. Obernolte: "No, we only did 2 games on NES."
Cheetahmen Corner: Was Far Sight ever scheduled to do the unreleased Action 52 game for the Super Nintendo, or the Sports 5 game for the Sega/Super Nintendo systems? If so, do you remember how far along those games got before being scrapped? Were they just planned, or did they actually make it into some form of alpha or beta cart?
Mr. Obernolte: "We were developing Sports5 on the Genesis. We had it in a
barely-playable state before things went sour with Active."
