I am wondering how woman can have (say) 3-5 kids under the age of 5. I know people want their kids to be close but putting your body through multiple pregnancies without first recovering and giving your body some times to adjust it's not good. I read so many posts about miscarriages when people are trying for a baby and they already have kids so close together. I am not flaming I just want to find out why? I have 1 dd and planned on getting pregnant when she was two but I never thought about having another one six months later. Pregnancy is a big stress to your body and even though our bodies are able to handle it, multiple times could end up making miscarriages more likely. My friend had a c-section and 2 weeks later she got pregnant because according to her 'she felt fine'. Now when her dd is born her ds will be 10 1/2 months. The doctor told her she will probably lose the baby because her body hadn't had time to heal. Just wondering and trying to distract from all school posts.

[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:52 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]i wonder if you are talking about my post. there's no evidence at all that shows a correlation between miscarriage and the closeness to a previous pregnancy. (other than something like pregnancy immediately after trauma to the uterus like a d&e after a miscarriage). if your question is why would you want to have kids close together, i'm happy to respond.

Personally I could never look after a nb and an 11 m/o as well as I would want to. I am thinking a 2 1/2 year gap will be more manageable.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:56 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]OP here...I'm not really talking about any one post or any one person, except the one mentioned in the story. I don't exactly have a 'time frame' either. I was just wondering because I notice that people are just getting pregnant when their baby is just a few months to under a year old. I was 15 months old when my brother was born and I don't ever really feel like I got much quality time with my mom. Of course after 2 my mom was done but she makes it clear to me that it was not something she wanted, or something I should want. She has encouraged me to wait. Maybe that's why. I don't think I could handle more than one right now but I'm open to discussion about why others make the decision to have a baby while they still have a baby. I'm not trying to be rude I'm just curious that's all.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:12 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]i guess a lot depends on your experience. i never felt cheated out of my mom's attention. i don't think my kids feel cheated out of mine. But that doesn't make it good or bad.

Does anybody watch that 90210 remake on the CW? My (12yo) dd wants to watch it. I don't like her watching things that are excessively materialistic and sex-obsessed. As I recall the first few years of the original 90210 weren't like that - is this similar?

I do not think a 12yo should watch.... so far one of the girls who was a druggie is now pregnant, another girl is living in a hotel, another just got a tattoo of her boyfriend's name.... almost all of them drink, party, and have sex.... very materialistic girls. As an original 90210 watcher, I felt like the first show would try to touch on real problems.... this spin off just seems like it is looking for ratings... nothing the show does is horrible, and I don't know, maybe these things do happen IRL, but why put ideas in their heads?

Any opinion on the social scene at tt ss once the kids are in high school? For example, if the girls are not meeting boys at school, is there a desperation/competition thing when they have joint activities w/their brother schools? How would you compare the boy/girl thing with that at a coed school? I've heard that girls at ss are more likely to be promiscuous (and often go for older men), either in high school or once they get to college.

Talk : : February 14, 2009
Urban Baby, destination of the clinically neurotic? Between my wife and I we have 4 different Ivy League school credentials (we both went to public schools prior to college). We're fortunate and in empowered professional situations. Both of us recall being in college and noting how it was the Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, & Choate, etc. crowd that seemed to have plentiful drugs (marijuana & cocaine). In fact the more elite the girls education, the easier it was for me and my male friends to enjoy sex with them. I read UB and am amused with the measure of concern, energy, & stress people place on getting their 5 and 6 year old into certain schools. Where is this supposed to lead to? Some of the most risque sexual and drug stuff I engaged in was in the halls of Amherst, Wellesley, Wheaton, Skidmore, & Williams on road trips. I also noted in my professional life I know more people that have built companies that went to your standard public school and then to their State U or what have you - than to the elite North East schools. In fact the most empowered people I know never finished college and have secured wealth for future generations to come by going against the grain and building their companies. I can only imagine these people that stress themselves and place this value and concern on 5 and 6 year olds getting in the right school....at age 5 or 6 have never been in the inner circles of privilege or something, seems ridiculous to me. A thousand things can steer your child down the wrong path - even though you did "seemingly" everything right as a parent up to age 18. I've also seen kids that did everything WRONG up to age 18 - blossom in their collegiate years and distinguish themselves on an enormous scale(professionally). I think all of your kids are going to be fine no matter where they go to school - as long as you support their dreams - as they get older and form dreams. Pressure and stress your kids, force them to accept and buy into your dreams and they may well be snorting coke off some boy's dick in the basement of a beer stained frat house - I've seen it more than once in the Ivy League. Going to X school assures you of.....well absolutely nothing....in the big picture and greater scheme of things. Character comes from your home, your household. Too bad all these elite schools at every level can't publish how many of their alums are depressed, on meds, alcoholics, etc...oh dear....the dirty little secret called "the truth". Okay, I feel better lending some balance and perspective to UB.
2 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.14.09, 10:06 PM [ Flag ]Thank you for saying what I want to say about this whole situation. I think however there is one other thing that has to be said. For those of you making sure your child has 'every opportunity' make sure you also teach them about disappointment. I don't know how many parents make it so protected and try to help there kids avoid disappointment that when the kids grow into adolescents and adulthood they have no idea how to handle it when it happens. These are the people that lose their businesses (let's say in economic crisis) and kill themselves, or get rejected by a girl and kill themselves. Make sure your child knows how to deal with disappointment. Because without disappointment and failure, success means nothing.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 11:17 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I don't disagree with your point; my kids are in public. But just between you and ME, when you flaunt your Ivy credentials using incorrect grammar, you persuade me that the Ivies are as overrated as the K-12 privates.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:43 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]By providing only a bed and a bath, it IS a dorm. There's a fine line to walk when you house your domestic help, and if you're going to take that step, you have to have the resources and the patience to allow them to live like human beings, not appliances. If you don't have the resources or the personal disposition, you're not in a position to employ live-in help.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:44 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]wrong, if DH were staying in his employers home while he worked there I would not expect him to have people sleeping over and coming in and out with his employers children in the house

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]^^^Lawyer here. This is absolutely true. All the more reason why people really should proceed with caution before employing any live-in help. And another wrinkle: once you set up a live-in situation, you become a landlord, subject to state and local RENTAL laws. So even if you fire the nanny, you still will likely have to go through normal eviction proceedings to get her to leave, which can take up to 90 days.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]this still does not mean that a domestic service worker can have guests hanging out on their employers' couch watching tv, a rotating door of boys/girls sleeping over or any other behavior along those lines...it is not appropriate...if you don't like it, don't take the job and don't hire a live in
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:31 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Actually, legally it DOES mean a domestic service worker can do all this, since it's now THEIR home as well as the employers -- unless otherwise stated in a formal lease.

Honestly, people ... if you're going to have live-in help, you need to treat the "help" like individuals they are. Take it from someone who's been employing live-ins for close to 30 years now. Fact: your nannies are young women who WILL have sex ... most likely, at some time, in your home. Yes, in the same home as your kids. It's no big deal ... I'm assuming sex is already going on in your homes now, is it not? Or there wouldn't be kids! Either you provide the live-in nanny/cook/maid/butler/governess/footman/manservant with their own PRIVATE quarters (a large windowed closet off the kitchen -- even with its own "bathroom" -- while appropriate in an earlier era when household help were not even considered to be full citizens or even worthy of their own opinions -- is totally unacceptable in today's more enlightened and civilized society), or you don't have live-in help. Period. Not allowing your help to enjoy the rights and privileges of personhood in today's society, including leisure time, the freedom to do what they want during that leisure time, and full privacy is a sure recipe for setting yourself up for a future of revolving-door nannies who burn out quickly -- at best. At worst, you'll end up with resentful nannies who'll steal from you or do damage to the apartment. Either way, you're creating a situation in which even the most dedicated nanny will be preoccupied with planning her next move out of the the little prison you've created for her, distracting her from her real job, which is to watch and guide your children! Is that really what you want for your kids?
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:22 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]i'm not sure if you are being snarky or serious...but we are certainly not offering a large windowed closet with a "bathroom"...
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:25 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]^^^worth of their own opinions, is totally unacceptable in today's more enlightened and civilized society), or you don't employ live-in help. Period. Either way, not allowing your help the opportunity to have a life outside of work (and the space and privacy in which to do it) is only setting yourself and your family up for a constant revolving door of burned-out and burned-UP nannies who at best will end up resenting and stealing from you, and at worst neglecting your children.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:27 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I disagree, it is unacceptable for a nanny to have overnight guests. On her time off, she is welcome to go where ever she wants, but ultimately it is the home of her employer and the person should be respectful of this fact. If the nanny is not comfortable with this arrangement then they do not have to take the job.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:29 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Read above, hon. Ultimately, if room and board are part of her compensation, she's now a TENANT in your home, with all the legal rights that any other tenant under state and local rental laws enjoys.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:04 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Not true. Not OP lawyer mom, but lawyer DH here. The law is grey in this area, but leans more towards the "tenant", e.g., the domestic. Unless you write it into a contract, he or she is, in fact, a tenant, protected under the NYS and NYC rental laws.

Another enjoyable and ridiculous nanny thread which has clearly been taken over by one crazy nanny! And the so-called lawyer, of course. Anyone who hires a professional live-in nanny does so with a work agreement which clearly specifies lots of the issues above, including overnight guests. No one allows a live in nanny to have overnight guests at will. Sorry, this just doesn't happen in 99% of live-in situations. No responsible parent would allow random men/women to be coming through their home and have the kids see that, not to mention the safety issues. So everyone I know with a live-in, including myself, makes it clear during the interview process that this is not allowed and professional nannies understand this. I've also had au pairs and same goes for them. In Manhattan a room and bathroom shared with kids are standard. Anything more is great, but unusual. However, the pay for a live-in is also not much lower than a live-out nanny so they do reap a true $ benefit by being a live-in. Also, no one I know expects their live-in nanny or au pair to be "on call 24/7." Every decent employer clearly outlines a maximum weekly hours for the salary and provides a schedule. Hours above this are paid overtime or otherwise compensated. Employing a live-in is not most families' first choice, just as being a live-in is not usually the first choice for most nannies. It is usually a 1-2 year situation for most families and nannies due to everyone knowing the compromises involved. But their are also benefits for both parties and if the work agreement is clear, well-designed, comprehensive, and adhered to by employer/employee, a live-in nanny situation is not inherently an evil thing for anyone.

She's not much into sex these days, but that's ok because our best friends are coming over tomorrow and he and I will find some "alone" time either down in my workshop or out in the garage. Life is good!

Good sex last night and this morning (although I also had a TMI issue!). DH and I went to a party with an open bar last night -- and got just drunk enough! :)

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:16 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Probably had something to do with his eating out her ass ... and then she having some residual wet farts. I'm just guessing.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:17 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Nothing very exciting (just kind of juvenile!): DH scratched me "down there" and I was a little bloody afterwards (and then I "inspected" and figured out what had happened).

Based on my experience, people will ask. And you'll tell (of course) and everyone will know by pick-up. Our class did very well (nearly half to fc tt), with only one shutout (which you could see coming as the mom was truly nuts--nothing to do with the kid, imo).

How many kids are in the tippy top of WL at Dalton? Any guesses? Are we talking 20 kids? or 100 kids?
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.14.09, 12:54 PM [ Flag ]LOL. 100 kids do not make the "tippy top" of a wl for a class with 100 kids in it. Would imagine, at most, 5 kids of each sex are top of wl. And I doubt the wl is anywhere near 100 dcs.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 01:10 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]NP: Yes, it does. They only have so many FA dollars to give and if you need FA and are on the WL, then someone has to give up an acceptance with FA.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 01:29 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
how do you know "tippy top??"
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 01:24 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]do they send a priority waitlist letter? or, you just going by your PSD
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 01:32 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]hate to sound like a downer but dc was "A+ tippy top" in a very recent year. PSD said it could really work out since she had another dc with "tippy top" and had never even heard Babby use the A+ tippy top language before. Anyway, no spots moved at all for dc's gender and dc did not get in. Later while telling this story with freinds at dinner from dcs school (which we love btw) two othe parents said they were also tippy top of the w/l and had been told earleir they were in just like us. I have also seen lots of tippy top language here since then. My guess is that at least 20 dcs get tippy top talk from Babby to the psd's if I knew 4 from my year.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:31 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Actually top 20 on the WL at Dalton is very good. They get over 1000 applications, so it's meaningful. of course, it can only turn into spots if the families with solid accepts actually turn them down which doesn't happen often at Dalton but still, this year is diff bec of the economy. I can't imagine all who were offered accepts can take it. So many layoffs and so many feeling insecure. Last year, some 5 kids chose D over Hunter but I don't think that will happen this year.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 06:35 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]how would you know "top 20" - does Dalton tell people this??
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:59 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
This is a bummer! We were told the same (DS) and a friend was also told they were at the top of the top. All boys. Joke on us or could we literally be the three top?

[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 06:11 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I just posted below. Our dd is a bit of a tomboy and easily distracted when boys are around. I think being w/ all girls has helped balance her out. Most of her good friends from the neighborhood are still boys, but she's gotten better at socializing w/ girls and it seems to be easier for her to stay focused in a class w/ only girls. She started out in a co-ed school, switched to SS in the middle of elementary. We're all very happy we made the change.

Overwhelmed - just received word that my b/g twins are--between the two--getting into all 7 TT schools as well as most of the 2T. We love them all so much, we just can't decide, so it looks like we're arranging a special schedule that will involve shuttling them between the various schools for different classes each day. This will be expensive, but we care a lot about status and college admissions, so I think it's worth it. Wish us luck!

Dh's coworker sent her dd there. Ds is at Collegiate (I say that to give a frame of reference). After a few years they didn't think the curriculum was challenging enough and pulled her out. The expectations were very low. And the stories she told me made me agree. That said, we really liked the school when we toured. Found it really intriguing.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 02:42 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I toured the school and loved it. (for an older DC) Did a lot of research by speaking to current parents and was impressed with their sense of community. And none of them were dopes.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 02:50 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]friend has a son there and she loves the personal attention he gets from teachers and advisor. she doesn't think it's as academic as it could be, but overall is really happy there. i thought it was the best open house by far, and i liked what i saw on the tour. the facilities aren't spectacular. we didn't end up applying there, but that was mostly because of the location.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 02:54 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Facilities are changing. They bought a plot of land on 92nd and 2nd. The plan is that the lower school will eventually move to where the upper school currently is (88th and CPW) and the upper school will move into the new space.

[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 11:24 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]If you end up having a boy (which is unlikely) you can take a day or two to pick a name. My df went without a name until he was two weeks old because his parents were convinced they were having a girl! He was not scarred for life.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 11:28 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]with my first kid one technician said it was a boy, then the doctor who came to chekc said girl, and then a few weeks later a doctor also said it was a girl. When I mentioned this to someone who I worked with she said that she had had a sonogram and they had told her she was going to have a girl, but she had a boy. I asked how old her kid was - and she told me 16. Now my point being - not that it doesn't happen - that a technician and/or doctor will mess up regarding the sex, but I think that I can understand that happening 15 years ago, not in 2009. Know definitively that once you reach or pass the age of 33, your husband regrets marrying you. Politically incorrect, but true. By that age you're considered an albatross, a rapidly depreciating asset, and ultimately the source of debt, frustration and skull numbing misery. Men only want companionship and relatively effort free sex, not co-comingled financial profiles and a compromised claustrophobic existence . . . they only marry because you demand it . . . Happy Valentine's Day.

[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:03 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]What I was thinking too. I married at 32. It is now 8 years later and I am extremely happy with him, and he with me. We have 2 great kids and are really genuinely good friends. We also enjoy sex a lot together. I look better than I did in my 20's and am smarter, more relaxed and more confident. My boobs are saggier, but that's easily taken care of with a nice demi from Eres! ;)

oh god i've got to get OFF THIS BOARD
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:03 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]DH here. You nailed it. If I could wave off every 27 year old guy who was thinking about popping the question, I damn sure would. Men propose between 27 and 32 because the dreaded couple's dinner parties come into play during that time period. You want to be mature? You want to maintain your current circle of friends? You want to fit in? Then you need to propose. BIG MISTAKE.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:09 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Oh don't be ridiculous. This is such a tired myth. It is well established fact that men are much happier married, are less likely to die early, are less depressed, less suicidal and get MUCH more sex than their single counterparts. For women, it is the inverse. They are less satisfied, work harder, are more stressed out and contribute to the household in terms of childcare, housework, AND bringing in income to a greater degree than do men. The day men are routinely considered househusbands, or the day we stop saying they "help" with housework is the day we're truly making strides here.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:13 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]So true!
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:53 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]ITA. My parents got divorced after 35+ years and my mother has done so much better as a single person, and my father (who is the one that wanted the divorce) has done so much worse. It's very clear who the "albatross" was in their relationship.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:56 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Isn't that so? I wonder why the myth persists with such strength. Women being not so jokingly referred to as ball and chain, and the ones who manipulate men into marriage and so on. I smell bullshit. I call bullshit.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 10:47 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]it's because men think that what's stopping them from getting laid by 23 year olds is their wife - but it's really that they are also over 35 and aren't now considered creepy and gross to those young girls. But they don't find that out until they get rid of the ball and chain that actually made sure they didn't have hair growing out of their nose.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 11:11 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]are now not aren't now. sorry.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 11:12 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]This happen to my BIL's parents. Father wanted a divorce after 41 years. Where the heck are you going after 41 years! But his mother looks fabulous. Started traveling all over the world with a senior citizen's group and met a very nice male companion who does a mean disco hustle. The father did date a younger woman and she seemed nice enough but they eventually broke up because of his health concerns.

[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 11:23 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Ha. Ha. And the goods he's pushing is probably not all that. The men who think like OP have thinning hair, think jack-hammering away at vagina makes them a sex-machine, when it makes them sexually boring, don't dress their age, and are usually the old guy in the club or what comedians call "Drink Guy". LOL We've all met these types of guys. Over 40 making fools of themselves over 20 years old who are dogging them out in the female bathroom at work or in a club. If these men really knew what young women were saying about them, they would fall on their needs a beg a woman closer to their age to marry them. 20 year olds do not like old man smell and looking old guy pubes.
