Best Fighting Game

We love fighting games here at GameSpot, and we rank games like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat II, and Samurai Shodown as some of our all-time favorites. With the growth of online gameplay, it appears that the genre is starting to make a comeback. And, like most years, 2004 saw the release of a handful of great new fighting games. Here are the finalists for Best Fighting Game of 2004:

Dead or Alive Ultimate

Publisher: Tecmo
Developer: Team Ninja
"For a game that's so bold as to call itself 'Ultimate,' DOAU sure comes close. It truly is the best, most fully featured Dead or Alive fighting game yet." - Greg Kasavin, from GameSpot's Full Review

Def Jam: Fight for NY

(XBOX, GC, PS2)
Publisher: EA Games
Developer: EA Canada
"If you like wrestling games, fighting games, or even just the world of hip-hop, Def Jam: Fight for NY is a game well worth owning." - Alex Navarro, from GameSpot's Full Review

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3

(PS2)
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Dimps Corporation
"The action is so fast-paced and viscerally satisfying that it can genuinely appeal even to those otherwise uninterested in Dragon Ball Z." - Ryan Davis, from GameSpot's Full Review

Guilty Gear X2 #Reload

Publisher: Majesco Games
Developer: Arc Developments
"Guilty Gear X2 #Reload is a fast-paced, well-balanced fighting game with lots of depth and variety, so it's an excellent game online. And it has plenty of offline options, too." - Greg Kasavin, from GameSpot's Full Review

Mortal Kombat: Deception

Publisher: Midway
Developer: Midway
"Mortal Kombat: Deception packs in some completely off-the-wall gameplay modes, but the core one-on-one fighting action--whether you play it offline or online--is easily its best part." - Greg Kasavin, from GameSpot's Full Review
And the Winner is...
