  • Okay, let us be honest; all those who talked about how terrible Michelle's outfit was, how many of you voted for Obama? All this is, is alot of B.S. from Obamas haters. Michelle look great.Their was nothing wrong with the outfit she wore. Grow up and get use to a black man being President of the United States.

    • I did vote for Obama and I still think her dress was absolutely ghastly. She needs to hire a stylist and quick.

Also, who we voted for holds no bearing on the discussion at hand. You grow up, stop pulling the 'OMG OBVIOUSLY HATING ON OBAMA BECAUSE HE'S BLACK" card at every chance, and get over it.

  • I thought Michelle Obama's dress displays conservative taste and is beautiful. If affordable any American woman would be able to wear this dress to a formal event even as a Mother of the Bride outfit. I liked that the dress is created by an relative unknown

  • Sheer essence and the epitome of "black" beauty. Michelle Obama was dressed appropriate for January weather in Washington DC as for the ocassion. I am sure the negative comments are coming from McCain and Palin supporters. Let it go, it's over now!

    • The following is a message from a local newspaper blog. The Obamas are in the White House now. However, bad taste is bad taste...so, don't politicize it! The negative comments are coming from people with fashion sense. Michelle's fashion "faux pas" need to be corrected, not encouraged.

Please read the following comment: "I voted for Obama, I think Michelle Obama is fantastic, and I am a fashion editor. My opinion: this outfit is ghastly!! Very bad color choice for her skin tone, very poor fit and tailoring (makes her appear huge in the wrong places!), age-inappropriate (looks like something my great grandmother would wear to a wedding), fashion "don't" sparkly necklace for the daytime, and horrible accessories (those shoes with that dress?!). This is not the first time that I have seen her look awful and wondered if she has a mirror to take a good look at her outfit before she leaves the house. It is extremely humorous to hear people praising her fashion sense when, to be kind, she is fashion challenged. I guess it is because they like her and like the Obamas. I like the Obamas, but only a blind sheep would rave about Michelle's fashion style! She is a lovely woman and she could do so much better. Please, some good designer out there, send her some fashionable clothes that suit her shape...and a good tailor."

  • It has nothing to do with voting for him or not... If her dress is ugly, it's ugly. I'm saying it is, but I also don't think it should really matter what the heck she has on anyway! Her dress isn't what's going to lead this country, the man standing beside her is... Let's talk about his suit instead! She just "arm candy", if that.

  • His suit or her dress the, topic was inaugural fashion. I find it hard to call a Princeton & Harvard graduate arm candy. Maybe you're getting her dark skin confused with Cindy McCain's tan skin. At this point in the game clearly he has been chosen to lead and we can only do better, surely we can do no worse.

(I hope she doesn't get sick.) I do love Isabel Toledo's designs and I like many of Michelle's fashion choices, but today didn't hit the mark.

Mrs. Biden was dressed like a Barbie and I hope her fashion sense develops before we let her go overseas!

Now the little Obama girls were a delight for the eyes and J. Crew outfitted them well!

I'm sure we'll see some really lovely gowns this evening! I can't wait!

That's my perspective

I completely abhored this dress and agree with the fashion editor. She does need the help of a stylist, and badly. This dress was almost as much of a travesty as the "black widow" dress she wore the day Obama was declared President elect.

    • and you are a fashion editor for who, and how you as her stylist may have improved her fashion choice yesterday ? Was it because she wasn't wearing Cavalli or Gucci. There are lots of talented designers out there beside just the mainstream big name designers ! Maybe it's time for the standard..."this doesn't match that skin tone", " who was she wearing etc... be revisited and reworked, because most african american women can wear a range of color regardless of skin tone, and she looked absolutely gorgeous ! How about it's time for the fashion world to rework and take a look at their standards !

  • This looked like Queen Elizabeth's discard, without the hat. And then, I couldn't believe that it would get worse with the ball gown. She looked totally uncomfortable with the "Thing" to begin with, and had the appearance of a fluffy snowman. Chanel, I'm certain is rolling in her grave. Poor taste again. How disappointing.

    • Michelle's choices today were ALL wrong. The yellow dress thing with the "housecoat" top was horrid! Wrong color for her skin, too glittery for daytime, frumpy, etc. The ball gown was even worse---looked like her 1981 prom dress gone wrong! What was all that "fluffy" chicken feather stuff on it? How about the Wilma Flinstone strap? It's WINTER for crying out loud--put on a more fitted, mature jewel tone, Michelle! She has terrible posture and could use some good tips on grace and poise. President Obama looked so dapper and handsome--his wife looked dowdy and unsophisticated next to him. It reminded me of Pres. Bush Sr. and Barbara Bush--she always looked kind of old and boring next to him. Michelle looks like the President's older aunt. She needs a good style consultant.

  • The dress clearly documents that Michelle simply has no eye for fashion that suits her bulky body. The designer is a joke.
She now represents our country and we have the right for her to have enough sense to realize that she needs to consult on this, and not solely rely on a designer.
Smart and nice lady, but dress was a huge embarassment to our country.

  • I have mixed feelings about both her inaugural fashion choices. I thought her daytime outfit looked pretty elegant from far but too sparkly in the closeups. She's a beautiful woman and looked good at the balls but I didn't care for the gown itself. The good news is that she couldn't do any worse than Cindy McCain who reliably picked some incredibly garish outfits like the hot pink leather suit or the saffron monstrosity ($300,000??) at the convention ...ugh!

  • Disappointed in both the ensemble and the gown. Please get rid of Ikram Goldman and find someone with better taste. The inaugural outfit was ugly, dowdy and not flattering at all with inappropriate accessories and the evening gown would've been more fitting at a prom.

  • If I were the Obamas' best friend, I would advise them as follows: Barry, pin your ears back, grow your hair out, don't ever smoke any crack, eat healthy vegetarian meals, wear your hats brim forward. Michelle, hire a fashion consultant and listen to him or her. Get braces to fix your buck teeth so you can close your mouth properly, get a chin implant to improve your profile, lose five pounds from your hips and thighs, get a back brace to correct your posture, stop plucking adn drawing your eyebrows above your natural brow line, and get an etiquette coach so you don't wear sparkly clothes before five o'clock, and don't appear in formalwear without long gloves. As for the dresses, I liked the bright yellow color, and it was a warm, sensible choice for the weather, but the fit should have been tailormade, the front of the dress was weird with the chiffon floaty thing, rhinestones and spangles are bad taste for daytime wear, as they are designed to glitter under artificial light. The green shoes and gloves were appropriate for the time of day, just not with eveningwear. The ballgown, was pretty in and of itself, but very young for a middle-aged woman with a rather thick, short waist and small bust. The shoulder strap would have been better had the bottom anchoring it to the dress been broader and gradually narrowed a bit. A built-in brassiere and a corset would have given you a better shape in this dress. A better choice is an a-line look which flows over the bulkiness of your body, or a princess line that defines your bosom and then flows seamlessly downward. However, an aerial shot of the dress was very flattering of it and you. Altogether, you did look very pretty and elegant and happy in these positive and forward-looking color choices, and you definitely looked very feminine, which is always pleasing to the eye. So don't regret your choices, revel in them, and in the wonderful occasion which governed them, and just work on the choices you make in the future. You are a very feminine, attractive woman in the full flower of your life as wife and mother and public person. Enjoy the trip and keep 'em guessing!

  • I thought the daytime dress was great and she was as beautiful and elegant as we anticipated. However, her ball gown

  • From the terrible black and red mess she wore election night to this hideous, bedazzled, monochromatic, bore of an ensemble to the unfinished looking, frumpy table cloth ball gown she wore last night, it's clear Michelle needs to spend less time arching her eyebrows and packing the pounds on her hips, and more time allowing someone with a little taste to pick out her clothes (hopefully they are a dietician as well). And please, no shoulder pads, Lurch doesn't need any help in that department.

  • She would be a lot better off if she would only dress more professional. She does not dress business like. She dresses as if she is in a fashion show. She want people to make so much over the the way she dresses.
    anonymous anonymous 1/21/09 Reply

  • Black people always put too much into the way they dress. PROFESSIONAL is always the best way to go. The way she dresses sends the wrong message to our young women as though it's all about clothes.

  • I have a weakness for matching coats and dresses and Mrs. Obama did not disappoint. Her gold-colored inauguration dress and matching coat outfit was absolutely beautiful; I really liked it. It reminded me of the Countess of Wessex' (she being the wife of Queen Elizabeth's youngest son Edward) wedding dress -- it was a white dress with a nice floor-length matching coat. It was very attractive.
As for Mrs. Obama's inauguration ball dress -- it was OK. It made her look a tad plump and I don't think it was quite right for the ball -- she should have worn a more traditional satin-type gown instead of ruffles. The ruffles made her look a little more round than she actually may be.

  • That yellow dress and matching coat reminded me of a Mother of the Groom ensemble. Not something one would wear in the morning. Another thing that horrible diamond necklace, the only time you see someone wearing that is if your selling jewelry in the jewelry store. Thought the morning outfit terrible. Laura Bush was outstanding in her very elegant suit. To bad she didn't wear something more suitable for daytime.

Her dress for evening was outstanding and she looked appropriate.

  • I hate to admit this but I detested that outfit. I actually didn't like the white one either. It was matronly as well as not appropriate for day wear...I admire Michelle Obama but not necesarily her sense of style.

  • I have a weakness for matching dresses and coats so I'll give 2 thumbs up for Michelle Obama's inauguration dress. It was lovely. It was tasteful, conservative (the only thing about her that was), a nice color and she looked good in it. By the way, I did not and would never vote for Obama mainly because of his stance on abortion. However, I can still appreciate how nice Mrs. Obama looked at her husband's inauguration.
I did NOT care all that much for the inauguration ball gown - it was more like a dress than a gown. She should have worn a satin-style long gown. The dress she wore made her look a bit plump.

If you were put in this situation you might like to look in a mirror, I don't have the largest breast, my walk might not be the best, before you talk about someone else look at yourself. Then you can judge her husband is the president not her.

  • The yellow dress wasn't really appropriate for daytime. It is an evening cocktail dress. It's a bit too glittery for daytime and to say the least the rhinestones are definitely for evening. If they had made the outfit long it would have made a much better dress for the evening balls than the cheniile robe dress she wore in the evening.

  • Gosh !! Lady get a stylist!! You started out so well and you have been down to the tubes. What was up with that piece of yellow ridiculousness! I mean seriously. And now there is this other piece of monstrosity that she wore at the Inauguration ball. Her clothes were just hideous!! I looked at the VP's wife and thought how smart and sexy she looked at the inauguration. and michel was a big fat disappointment. Hope that's not a harbinger of things to come. and in case some of you may be wondering, I am black, only with a lot more fashion sense obviously. I would not even be buried in those two get-ups because of how hideous looking both are.

  • My grandmother had a bedspread made from that laced material. Michelle was dressed beautifully the day before in black and tan only to choose this disaster. Michelle needs a fashion consultant who will be honest.
    anonymous anonymous 1/22/09 Reply

  • Let's be honest. Race is not the issue. The issue is that our First Lady needs to show the class and style that is expected of world leaders. So far Michelle Obama has missed the mark on most occasions. It is embarrassing for the nation. Just because she is now the First Lady doesn't mean that we have to pretend that everything she wears is wonderful when it truly is in bad taste. She needs serious help.

At least she dresses like she doesn't have a stick up her ass. If you expect her to wear a suit at every occasion that is stupid. She's young & dresses like she is. • I thought her evening gown was quite lovely; HOWEVER, if you can give her a tip, every time I looked at her, regardless of which outfit she was wearing, I wanted to tell her to please STAND UP STRAIGHT. The way she stands makes her look stooped shouldered. It really detracts from her. I know it's hard to stand up straight once you are an adult, but she is now the First Lady, so it woulld be important to make the effort.

  • The yellow inauguration dress definitely was not for daytime wear. The glitter on it (rhinestones?) and the lacy-appearing texture of the fabric made it an after-five dress. Why on earth would she select such a dress to wear to a morning event? It was truly tacky. I wonder why someone (or many) did not give her better advice. Laura Bush's dove gray, tailored outfit was perfect for the morning inauguration.
