[-]Qeustion from newbie - Received our copy of ds's ISEE test scores, and noted at the bottom the list of schools we have requested the results to be sent to. Do the schools get the same copy, as in they get to see the list of schools we have applied to?!

[-]letters go out at the end of this week - anyone else dreading being SO? any btdt? I keep trying to tell myself that even if it does happen - we can always apply another year. Right? *sigh*
10 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Not any more. Now I am just scared to death that we won't even be able to stay in Manhattan anymore
[ Reply | Options ]-
Really anxious too, but you are right: next year is always a possibility. Is your zoned school an option? (Ours isn't, D3 & not good)
[ Reply | Options ]Went thru it last year and we were nervous because we were originally SO for preschool. Not "connected", but applied for 12 schools and fortunately ds shone on the playdates. Got only one accept (due to psd), but was our first choice. Hang in there!
[ Reply | Options ]I'm worried about the 35k to be honest. I think I'd prefer a few accepts and then take the time to think about if it's really worth it (for us right now).

[-]heard ex-boyfriend is getting a divorce. googled his name and found a recent civil record, a protection order, he's defendant, his soon to be ex the plaintiff. is this just a technicality in divorces? what could an order of protection mean?
2 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I spent time in family court where most people looked middle or working class, so the well dressed guy with a Blackberry caught my attention. He was sitting in the "audience" when the judge called his name. As he stood up and started moving toward the aisle to approach the bench like everyone else, the judge raised her hand with the "stop" gesture. She called out, "Sir, freeze! Do not go into the aisle. You have a restraining order against you." During my countless visits to those chambers, he was the only parent not allowed to go into the aisle or approach the bench. Protection orders were not typical during the time I spent in court.

[-]Tell me what you think: My dd is a year-and-a-half and is very beautiful (I know I'm biased) but ever since she was born everyone tells me that I need to get her into commercials and baby modeling (not that fake beauty pageant crap) but I am torn on whether to proceed or not. I don't think I'd mind her being in a few commercials but I don't think I would want it to go further. We looked into agents (just curious) and found one that thinks our daughter has a lot of potential but said that at this age she will not get a lot because they is a demand for twins and triplets that can take turns in front of the camera. Should I proceed or wait till she's older? Has anybody done this with a young one and was it worth it? I'd like to start a savings...
19 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Don't bother. When an agent says your kid has a "lot of potential", they're just being polite. If your DD was a real knockout, the agent would have signed her on the spot.

Sometimes soap operas will use one baby, because most likely they only need them for literally 60 seconds of screen time. But maybe wait until she's a bit older. My GF had very beautiful daughter and everyone would tell her this constantly, so she just decided to go for and get her agent. The girl does commercials and was in a big broadway show. She's older now (teen) and not getting a lot of work so be prepared for that and to help her transition either to a "normal kid" or into a young adult actress.
[ Reply | Options ]My dd did several ads and a major mag cover--no trouble getting work (chosen from headshots--no go-sees). She "retired" when she started preschool as I would never pull a dc out of school for modeling. Got lots of great photos out of it, but it's not a huge source of cash, if that's what you're thinking.
[ Reply | Options ]My niece did tv and print for under 4 years, over 15 yrs ago and made enough to pay for 4 yrs of college +help with downpayment for her very reasonably priced apt apt. She never needed to do a series long term, go on a billion go-sees for commercials or become a household name. My young child is on a similar track and did high visibility 'free'(editorial) work, which gained the notice of well paying catalog and advertising clients. The key is not pushing it and stopping as soon as the child wants/needs to.

most agents will not take a kid on until age 4. the kid has to be like a zombie. take instruction well and nver be the distracted or curious type, there is a lot of "hurry up and waitinging: on set, so when the kid is hanging out for 3 hours while lighting, and they become cranky and tired or hungry they will not care and not up with it. as one big agent once told me, there are hundreds of mothers standing in line behind you who will put their kid through that and not care. as sad as that is.
[ Reply | Options ]This is a rather innacurate generalization. Zombies without curiousity or focus?
[ Reply | Options ]ok, i exaggerate. but the type of kid that listens and does what he/she is told, is passive type that will not be distracted by activity and objects around them. you know the type.
[ Reply | Options ]I've been on set with little kids and they were running around, playing pranks on people, being naughty in a fun way, playing tag ... but as soon as the the director said action they were all professional and on point. Haven't met one zombie. I think some kids take to "show business" and some simply do not like it.

My DD did modeling for 3 years, from about the age of 2.5 It was okay, but the only meaningful $$ comes from TV commercials if they go national and have a long flight. She did land a big commercial but was edited out. I'd probably have stuck with it for longer, but she lost interest, and our total earnings were probably about $2K... IMO it takes personality as much as anything. Totally disagree with zombie remark; I think it's the really outgoing kids who do well, and those who really love to do it. If she doesn't it will show...my DD is kind of moody and shy, and that held her back I think, although she had lots of calls. Also FWIW though my DD is strikingly beautiful (yes, of course I'm biased, but everyone does always say it) I thin...
[ Reply | Options ]^^I got to rambling but meant to say that I'm glad we tried it b/c now I know (and would have always wondered) and think you should try it so you'll have that satisfaction, but I'd wait until your DC is at least 2 before putting much time into it. Then, just send photos to agents; whatever you do, don't spend any $$ on professional photos or anyone who promises you work.

hi all, my husband is a fighter pilot recently diagnosed w/ glue ear. he's been grounded and they seem to be fast tracking him for the grommit surgery. the concern is that if anything doesn't heal from the surgery, that's it career over. i've read that it could potentially clear on it's own in 3 months, Otovent therepy, antihistimes (sp) could help & cut out dairy. is there anything else i'm missing or anything anybody has tried? also, am looking for a recommendation for a great ENT doctor on Harley St London. thanks all.

poster above: I have 3 kids (ages 8y, 4y and 3mo)...there isn't an Olivia in any of my dds classes nor do we know any. On the other hand there are a bunch of Isabellas, Sadies, Charlottes and Eleanors or yes I can't forget Julia too
[ Reply | Options ]Interesting. I know 4 Olivias, all under 10! (I also know a lot of those other names, except Sadie)

olivia hasn't been lower than 7th most popular girls name in the US for 5 years now...definitely an 'amy' or 'jennifer' of this generation http://www.socialsecurity.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi

op: I know - that is part of my fear. Then when I thought about it and asked around, I realized that no one under the age of 30 gets that reference. Sad, eh?

Yuch on Stella. An ugly sounding name made popular by a few hipster type celebs and now, downtown-brooklyn hipster wannabee parents. Nothing to do with your mom (btw, I share my mothers name and I love that fact!)I love Annaliese and Veronica is an interesting option which is not popular. FWIW, when I was a manager, I had an analyst named Analivia work for me and thought the name, while sort of "made-up," was actually very nice.

[-]I need to get a car that will fit 3 carseats in the back (three kids under five, yikes!) and I want to avoid an SUV or minivan if possible. I haven't owned a car since college and haven't a clue what, if anything, exists these days. (Are there still station wagons!?!) Any advice, suggestions most appreciated!

oh boy, this is my problem too. pg with #3 due in april and dcs will be 3.10 and 2.3yo. My neighbor got the GMC acadia which is also a crossover but styled like a minivan inside (with captains chairs but not the sliding doors). We are hoping to cram the 3 seats into our audi wagon but have not yet tried (in denial). There is also a mini-minivan, the mazda5, which we may consider.

4 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Well, Puerto Rico is supposed to be fabulous, it's annexed by U.S. or whatever, and it's close. How about that? If you like my answer, what do you think about my mother disinheriting me b/c I have to move away due to DH job change?
[ Reply | Options ]Not OP but PR is a good idea if you get well out of San Juan. I also like St John, USVI but rent a villa/house(quite reasonable) and a small jeep. try www.vivacations.com-this is a resource, not spam.
[ Reply | Options ]oh and as for your Mom, Tell yourself what you might tell a child in a similar situation: She doesn't have the tools to make a good choice, so she wants to see you upset; Don't give her what she wants, keep your emotional response to yourself and she won't get what she wants and may have some chance to reflect on her immaturity. I'm sorry.

[-]I have a very energetic 18 month old daughter who is very sensitive. Anytime I (or daddy) say no she throws herself backward and hits her head on the floor - HARD. She does it all the time. I have gotten advice to ignore it - it doesn't work. She actually hurts herself because she falls straight back - not onto her butt and then onto the floor. You can hear the 'thud' from her head hitting the floor. I'm worried about her getting seriously hurt or getting a head injury. Any advice on how to stop this before she gets hurt or gets a concussion. TIA
1 reply [ Reply | Watch | Options ]my dd was like this...you need to get her to carpeting if you see a tantrum coming on..never let her keep banging her head. we would say dd I see you are really upset and that you are having a big feeling about not getting to xxxx and keep recongnizing the upset or anger..but making sure she does not hurt herself..we saw a shrink cause the tantrums got bad and she would get physical..this type of technique worked. please protect the head and her body

[-]so i was all set to get an iphone when my contract on my phone expired, but i'm starting a new job and will have a blackberry for the first time. does it make sense to move my phone to an iphone and have a blackberry?
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]-
thanks. sorry, know nothing about blackberries other than people are on them for e-mail all the time.
[ Reply | Options ]they are great for email and if u have to have one for work then no choice but to use. BUT the iphone is the best invention EVER and if you are getting a new phone anyway, just get that.
[ Reply | Options ]I think the iphone is a horrible invention. Autocorrect misspells DD's name which I've spelled correctly a hundred times and misspelled probably twice. Also the contact search funtion is a joke and my incoming email doesn't work very often. So, no email, can't access contacts quickly, and can't text. But my photos do look really great :) Yipee!
[ Reply | Options ]
YES YES YES ... and keep the Blackberry JUST for work so you can "forget it" during your off-hours.
[ Reply | Options ]It's kind of a pain to carry around 2 largish mobile devices. I unfortunately have to keep my work blackberry with me most of the time on evenings and weekends - so often end up just opting to bring that with me if I'm going out and want to carry a small bag....
[ Reply | Options ]The iPhone can replace the BB, depending on where you work. Some companies don't want you to use one for work b/c the IT departments can't maintain them. But, if your office uses an Exchange server, there is no technical reason your iPhone can't be set up to get work emails.
