Most Innovative Game

Though the gaming medium spans a wide range of disparate genres, from puzzlers and shooters to strategies and beyond, the games in each genre tend to follow the safely drawn blueprints for their type. But every year, there are a few games that defy convention and traditional genre boundaries, and shine as examples of truly original design. Whether these games are changing the rules of an existing genre, or attempting to create a wholly new and unique gameplay experience, the industry (and the game-playing public) is enriched by their existence. Our finalists for the 2004 Most Innovative Game Award are as follows:

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

(XBOX, PC)
Publisher: VU Games
Developer: Starbreeze
The Chronicles of Riddick resembles a first-person shooter, but it innovatively combines stealth, hand-to-hand combat, shooting, and even some third-person platforming elements into a cohesive whole.

Feel the Magic: XY/XX

(DS)
Publisher: Sega
Developer: Sonic Team
One of the very first Nintendo DS games, Feel the Magic makes ample use of the platform's touch-sensitive screen and other features, offering a truly one-of-a-kind gameplay experience.

Full Spectrum Warrior

(PC, XBOX)
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Pandemic Studios
Pandemic Studios turned its military training simulation into an innovative strategy title that suffered somewhat in execution, but carved a whole new niche in the tactical mold.

Katamari Damacy

(PS2)
Publisher: Namco
Developer: Namco
The Earth certainly is full of things, and only one game shows you how to turn those things into brilliant, twinkling stars.

Perimeter

(PC)
Publisher: Codemasters
Developer: 1C
Perimeter treats new territory in a way that no other real-time strategy title does, letting you sculpt the very earth around you, turning the lands you roam into a malleable resource.
And the Winner is...
