About the Show

Imagine a television show that draws biggest and hottest recording artists, actors and celebrities on most weekday afternoons. That's what Total Request Live, a.k.a. TRL, delivered for 10 delicious years on MTV. Hosted at various times by the likes of Carson Daly, Damien Fahey and Lyndsey Rodrigues, the show was the place to be if you wanted to get a glimpse of superstars greeting screaming fans inside MTV's New York studios and out in Times Square.

But all good things must come to and end and on November 16, 2008, MTV threw a ridiculous celebration, Total Finale Live, as a proper send-off for a show that held sway as the barometer of popular music and culture for a decade. A parade of celebrities and performers took a last stroll through the TRL studio set and past the squealing audience as we looked back at more than 2,000 incredible shows, guests, music videos, performances and more.

For weeks leading up to the Total Finale Live bash, TRL counted down to the big event with flashback shows celebrating the show's legacy. It was a thrill ride through time, looking back at memorable guests, the hottest performances, the funniest moments and so many more highlights from 10 years of TRL.

But when November 16, 2008's Total Finale Live rolled around, MTV called on the biggest celebrities to join in our celebration. Stars that were synonymous with TRL -- Beyonce, Fall Out Boy (minus Pete Wentz, who called in from California, where he was patiently awaiting Ashlee Simpson's delivery of their first child), 50 Cent and the Backstreet Boys -- did us the honor of performing during the final TRL party, as did the hip-hop triple-threat of Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Nelly, who teamed up for a one-time-only performance of TRL favorites. Also taking part in the show were TRL superstar mainstays Diddy, Taylor Swift, Hilary Duff, Good Charlotte's Benji and Joel Madden, and Korn's Jonathan Davis, who were all on hand to talk about TRL's place in their careers and in their hearts. Miley Cyrus was there, too, working the infamous TRL photo booth, and even though they couldn't be in NYC for the big send-off, Christina Aguilera and Travis Barker didn't want to miss the show and joined the celebration via satellite. Carson Daly and Damien Fahey co-hosted Total Finale Live, joined by a cast of MTV VJs that included Lyndsey Rodrigues, Vanessa Minnillo, Susie Castillo, Dave Holmes, Jesse Camp, Hilarie Burton, La La Vasquez and Quddus! Whether a fan of TRL as it came to a close or one of the very first fans who called 800-DIAL MTV to register a vote for your favorite music video of the day, Total Finale Live was a bittersweet event and a fitting farewell to an iconic MTV series.
