MURFREESBORO, Tenn -- Authorities have made an arrest in a 25-year-old murder investigation and a judge will decide whether the suspect should be tried as an adult.Kevin D. Patterson, 43, faces first-degree murder charges for a crime he is accused of committing less than a month before his 18th birthday.Chief Deputy Virgil Gammon told a news conference Friday that Patterson was the brother-in-law of 32-year-old Lynn Orrand, who was found shot to death Jan. 16, 1982 in a wooded area in eastern Rutherford County.Gammon said Patterson was arrested Thursday on a juvenile petition alleging first-degree murder because of his age at the time of the murder.
A juvenile judge on Friday ordered Patterson held until a transfer hearing in February when it will be determined whether he can be tried as an adult. The Orrand case had gone cold until earlier this year when detectives got a tip and reopened the investigation. A motive for the killing has not been given.
