Fringe Among Fall's Hottest Hairstyles

Feminine Styles Feature Color, Bangs, Waves

UPDATED: 9:41 am CDT October 8, 2007

Summer has officially ended. Along with the end of warmer days and unlimited sunshine, the ponytails and bobs of summer are disappearing.

"Hair with lots and lots of layers is big for fall," said Michelle Jindrich, owner of Salon Evolve in Gresham, Ore.

"Expect to see very extreme layers with a lot of length," said Jindrich. "Ask your stylist for strong perimeter layering."

Straight Hair Trends | Tips For Bangs

Avoid those subtle, barely noticeable layers and aim for those dramatic, dimensional layers.

"Cuts are so outrageously toned down," said Jindrich. That means those severe bobs and angled cuts should be softened with more layers and wispier looks.

Fringe Is In

"Bangs are hot right now," said Jindrich. "They are a simple update for most any hairstyle."

You can freshen up your summer hairstyle with a few snips of a scissor. Even if you followed the summery trend of bobs (influnced by Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham and Reece Witherspoon), you can make a change without seriously altering your style. "Solid, heavier bangs are popular," said Jindrich. The style is close to the brow line and pretty thick. When looking for influence, consider the thick, heavy bangs of the 1940s or those wispy summery styles of the 1980s.

"Also consider shorter, fringe bangs," she said. This style is intended to be wispier and cut higher above the eye brows. These bangs work well straight or swept to the side. And, if you decide that you don't love them, they grow out and blend easily into most hairstyles.

"Bangs are big right now," said Brittany Johansen, a college student. "I love how feminine they look."

A common misconception about bangs is that they'll make the face look more round or pudgy. This isn't necessarily so. Women with oval, heart or inverted triangle face shapes can wear heavy or light bangs with ease. Women with naturally round faces should aim for wispier bangs that taper out into layers or sideswept bangs to avoid rounding out the round face shape.

Even better, "they really accent the eyes," said Jindrich.

Texture Adds Dimension, Beauty

"Textured hair is really impactful," said Jindrich. "This look can be achieved for both straight and wavy hair."

"Straight hair should be enhanced with hairspray and a volumizing product at the roots," she said. Apply the hairspray in sections and adjust with fingers to give it more lift.

"Rock out layers with Pure Abundance Hair Potion," said Jindrich. "Hair potions usually give your hair lift without being sticky."

Want to wear waves? "Waves should be big at the crown," she said. Take your volume to the next level by using a volumizing product and consider some light ratting to really get a boost at the crown.

"My favorite hairstyles would be long hair with loose waves or a shoulder-length style with loose waves," said Jackie Rinna, a counselor. "They look sexy and low-maintenance."

When styling waves, Jindrich offers a tip.

"Wrap hair around the entire barrel of the curling iron -- don't use the spring-loaded clasp that holds hair in place -- for subtle waves," she said. "Finish it with a dry hairspray."

Beautiful Colors

As leaves change colors, so to do the popular shades and tones for hair. Think of rich, autumnal tones when seeking a new, updated color for your hair. Also, think of toning down those crisp, bright tones that worked for the summer.

"Color is very blended this fall," said Jindrich. Avoid those bold, chunky looks that seem to dramatically separate your hair into sections or focus too much attention on just the crown.

"Consider lots of honey, caramel and red tones," said Jindrich. "Colors are very autumn-influenced."

Makeup Tips To Finish Your Look

"Colors are warm for the face," said Jindrich. "These rich colors work on most faces without being too apparent."

"Try using gold, pinks and mauves on both eyes and cheeks, as they are accented this fall," she said. "Greens are also big, especially mossy tones."

If you're wearing bangs, consider smoky eyes with a nude mouth or pale, neutral eye colors with beautiful ruby red lips. Cosmetic trends are taking hints from old, glamorous Hollywood sirens.

Rosy cheeks look fabulous with blunt bangs, but they can lead to an overdone look if paired with darker colors on the eyes.

Finally, make sure to take a look at your brows. If they are unruly and unkempt, they can hurt even the most meticulously done face. Take a few minutes to trim down any wild hairs and consider using a brow pencil and brush or a wax to tame your brows and help them really finish your look.

What About Men?

"Hair is going shorter for men," said Jindrich. Those longer, tousled, skateboarder hairstyles of the last few years are being phased out.

"When asking for the right cut, men should ask their stylist for more of an A-line cut that is longer toward the face," she said. "The best cut will also be shorter toward the crown."

"Cuts for guys have more dimension than other recent styles," said Jindrich.
