Mikkeli, Finland


The factory is located in an industrial park in south part of Finland, about 2 km from Mikkeli itself.
 
The Mikkeli factory is responsible for the manufacturing of traditional and advanced wound care products, as well as some surgical products.

Production can be divided into the following operations:
- cutting non-woven rolls
- fixation of X-ray thread
- length cutting and folding
- siliconization
- lamination
- fixation of wound pads on the laminate
- packaging
- sterilization using steam or ethylene oxide
 
Main environmental impacts
The main environmental considerations are carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles transporting raw materials and finished products, and the generation of waste from the production process. For information on the environmental impact of sterilization, please see the section entitled Our production in the menu to the left.
 
Some results from the local environmental programmes 2001-2003:
  • To improve the segregation of burnable waste so that the amount of burnable waste will be 50% of the combined amount of burnable and landfill waste by the end of year 2003.

    - Target has been achieved during January-December 2003; the amount of burnable waste was in average 74%.

  • Truck utilization shall be more than 90% for finished goods transported to Waremme during year 2003.

    - Target was achieved with result 94%.
  •  
  • To improve the quality of burnable waste so that the amount of burnable waste transported to landfill will be less than 5% by the end of year 2003.

    - The target has been well achieved while every month 0% of burnable waste has transported to landfill.
  •  
    Some new local programmes have been set for coming years 2004-2007:
  • To reduce hazardous waste in relation to produced finished goods >20% from 2004-05-01 to 2006-12-31 when compared to year 2003. Total amount of hazardous waste was 58 tonnes in year 2004 and 121 tonnes in year 2003.

    - The amount of hazardous waste has already decreased 52% during year 2004 when compared to year 2003.

  • Motiva, energy saving project for the factory (Local target) from 30-04-2004 to 31-12-2007.

  • The new revision of the international standard of Environmental Management Systems, ISO 14001:2004, shall be implemented in the organisation during the year 2005.
