JULIANA von Norwich (1343-nach 1416), englische Mystikerin. Über Herkunft und Lebensumstände ist außer den Angaben, die sie in ihren »Revelations of Divine Love« macht, nahezu nichts bekannt. Vor 1393/94 wurde sie Reklusin bei der Kirche St. Julian in Norwich; ob sie vorher als Nonne in einem Konvent lebte, gilt als ungewiß. Vermutlich ist der Name J. vom Namenspatron der Kirche, der ihre Klause angeschlossen war, abgeleitet. Ihre Schriften lassen auf fundierte biblische und theologische Kenntnisse schließen. - Anlaß und Ausgangspunkt ihres Werkes sind sechzehn Visionen, die sie im Mai 1373 während einer schweren Krankheit erlebte. Die folgenden Jahre verbrachte J. mit Nachdenken über die Bedeutung des Geschauten. Ihren Niederschlag fand diese Beschäftigung in zwei Fassungen der Offenbarungen, die beide J. selbst zuzuschreiben sind: einer kürzeren, die zeitlich früher liegt und in weiterem Umfang biographische Details enthält, und einer längeren, die stärker theologisch durchgearbeitet ist. J. beschränkt sich folglich nicht auf eine bloße Wiedergabe ihrer individuellen mystischen Erfahrungen, sondern hat stets Gottes Heilswillen bezüglich aller Menschen im Blick. Themen der Offenbarungen sind vor allem die Gottheit Gottes und die Leiden Christi, auffällig ist die Betonung der Liebe und Güte Gottes und J.s unbeirrbares Vertrauen auf die Geborgenheit des Menschen in ihnen (hierher gehört auch das vielzitierte Bild von der Mutterschaft Gottes). Sie bilden den Hintergrund ihrer Reflektionen über Leid und Sünde. Charakteristisch ist die Umsetzung abstrakter und spekulativer Gedanken in anschauliche und sprachlich klare Bilder.
