Drug Free Tip of the Day #1

When is the right time to talk to your kids about drugs? Children at the age of six are old enough. It doesn't have to be a long, "serious" talk. take advantage of what experts call "teachable moments." When your family is together at dinner ... when you see a news story about drugs ... or while watching this "tip of the week." It's a chance for you to have a sincere talk. And it's not a talk you have only once ... try to have it often!

Parents: did you know that common household products can be used to get high? Young kids have been known to sniff glue, paint thinner or even hair spray. It can cause nausea, liver and lung problems and a loss of their sence of smell. But much more tragically, inhalants can cause sudden death. Tell your kids! Make sure they know.

Research shows that marijuana use among teens is highest in the summer months when the school is out. Marijuana interferes with concentration, memory, and motivation. In general it causes users to disappoint the very people most important to them. Let your kids know you love them and you want what's best for them, so you hope they'll leave marijuana alone.

Remember when your children were toddlers and you child-proofed your cabinets with special locks? Well it may be time for "teen-proofing." Pills you could have in your medicine cabinet right now are being abused by teens in record numbers. Make sure you kids know that mixing prescription grugs with alcohol can result in toxic and even fatal results. try substituting those "locks" ...with "talks!"
