North East Scotland
This corner of Scotland is home to more CASTLES than anywhere in the UK, SPEYSIDE itself contains over half the DISTILLERIES in all of Scotland, and the Spey and the Dee are, of course, some of the best fly-fishing waters in the world. Consequently tourism is a major source of revenue for the region, employing over 18,000 people and generating £200 million in turnover.
But tourism is not the biggest industry: that accolade belongs to the North Sea Oil and Gas industry which revitalised ABERDEEN (Scotland's third largest city) and the surrounding areas in the 1970's. Today the energy industries based in Grampian directly support approximately 100,000 Scottish jobs – with many more indirectly supported – and Shell is one of the biggest local employers.
