Logic Must Prevail In Nuclear Dispute
TEHRAN, March 4--Substitute leader of Tehran’s Friday prayers, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, on Friday expressed hope rationality and logic would replace a tendency towards monopoly, pride and discrimination in the examination of Iran’s nuclear case.
Speaking in the second sermon of Friday prayers before thousands of worshipers gathered at Tehran University campus, Rafsanjani said no wise person would treat a civilized and strong country with a strong public support like this, IRNA reported.
He said the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Union and the US should know that Iran will never forsake its right to conduct nuclear activities.
Pointing out that the IAEA has been putting extreme pressure on Iran in the past few years by sending numerous inspectors to the country and compiling reports, the substitute Friday prayers leader noted that Iran has now managed to emerge as possessor of a remarkable technology in the world.
Referring to nuclear negotiations between Iran and its partners as an attempt to create further transparency in Iran’s nuclear activities, Rafsanjani said, “Iran let the IAEA inspectors view all stages of uranium enrichment process though it was aware that they could not legally demand inspections from a number of its sites.“

Hossein Rezazadeh
TEHRAN, March 4--The cherubic Iranian hercules, Hossein Rezazadeh, was named “World Weightlifter of the Year 2004“ in a ceremony Thursday on the 100th anniversary of the international federation in Istanbul, Turkey.
The +105 kg world and Olympic champion was also included on the 12-member list of the century’s best lifters such as Pyros Dimas of Greece, Turkish weightlifters Naim Suleymanoglu and Halil Mutlu, and Russia’s Vasily Alexiev, IRNA reported.
President of the International Weightlifting Federation, Tamas Ajan, congratulated Rezazadeh, calling him the Olympic record-holder and top lifter of the world. Rezazadeh was awarded a plaque of honor.
Iran’s weightlifting supremo Ali Moradi and secretary of the country’s federation, Darab Riahi, were also present in the ceremony.
Rezazadeh proved unrivaled as he won the Olympic gold on walkover in Athens on August 25, 2004.
The 26-year-old, who invoked Hazrat Abolfazl (AS), a highly-respected leader of the Shiites, prior to his every attempt edged past all rivals with a 210-kg lift in snatch, which was later combined with a world record of 263.5 kg in the clean and jerk.
He improved his own record by 0.5 kg as he lifted the bar above his head in his third clean-and-jerk effort.
The Iranian icon, now the two-time Olympic gold medalist and twice world champion, was too strong for world super-heavyweights as his total lift, 472.5 kg, was well above the records of silver winner from Latvia Viktor Scerbatihs and Bulgaria’s Velichko Cholakov, who bagged the bronze.
Scerbatihs totally hoisted 455 kg and Cholakov 447.5.
Rezazadeh has already said he is determined to add another gold to his medals in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Ayatollah Khamenei:
University Students Harbinger of Future
TEHRAN, March 4--Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Thursday the young generation of university students is the most reliable and efficient human resources to accomplish great achievements.
In a meeting with members of the Union of Islamic Associations of University Students, the leader praised the knowledgeable young students as harbinger of a bright future, IRNA reported.
The leader criticized the US official’s description of US interventions in other countries as ’permissible’ and said independent nations are facing both overt and covert attacks of hegemonic powers.
He denounced the US officials for regarding themselves “headmen of a village“ and wanting all nations to follow their lead.
Ayatollah Khamenei also said the Middle East poses one of the most sensitive challenges in the world and the Americans attempted to fulfill their neo-colonialist dream of a greater Middle East by bringing to power regional governments under the guise of democracy to follow the policies of the US and western companies.
The leader referred to the exploitation of media and arts by hegemonic powers to materialize their neo-colonialist objectives and said the US would certainly fail to fulfill its objectives now that nations are deciding to fight its supremacy.
Pointing to the US failure in the past 26 years in its anti-Iran attempts, he said it was a clear proof that awareness helps nations stand up to any conspiracy.
Ayatollah Khamenei said young Iranian scientists have made a scientific breakthrough by acquiring civilian nuclear technology.

Prosecutor Seeks Press Freedom Clarification
TEHRAN, March 4--Prosecutor of Tehran’s Public and Revolutionary Courts Saeed Mortazavi sought further elaboration regarding press freedom.
In a letter on Wednesday addressed to the head of Tehran Justice Department, Abbasali Alizadeh, a copy of which was faxed to IRNA, Mortazavi sought explanation about what constitutes violations and his remarks about not banning publications, IRNA reported.
Alizadeh on Monday had quoted Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi as saying, “I have advised judges dealing with press violations to refrain from shutting down the dailies as far as possible and to deal with the press precisely according to the country’s press laws.“
Mortazavi noted in his letter that limitations of press freedom are defined in the country’s Constitution and civil laws that precisely state the punishments, cases in which the press can be temporarily shut down, and cases for permanent cancellation of the dailies’ publication licenses.
“The Justice Department has made its moves based on the public and private aspects of violations of certain press laws, keeping in mind the rights of those who had filed complaints and the legitimate freedoms spelled out in press laws,“ he said.
Mortazavi also complained that the mass-circulated dailies and news agencies have during the past two days misrepresented Alizadeh’s comments to suit their own interests.
Earlier in a letter addressed to Mortazavi, a copy of which was faxed to IRNA, Alizadeh wrote, “In response to some reporters’ questions, I have said that the esteemed head of the judiciary has directed judiciary officials to refrain from shutting down the press as far as possible and to precisely abide by the Press Law and other related laws in dealing with the press.“

London Mayor:
Sharon Should Be in Jail, Not Office

Ken Livingstone
LONDON, March 4--London’s outspoken mayor Ken Livingstone denounced Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as a war criminal, in a searing critique of Israeli policies published Friday in The Guardian newspaper.
Livingstone also rejected accusations of anti-Semitism, and brushed off fresh calls in his article to apologize for comments last month comparing a Jewish reporter to a concentration camp guard, AFP reported.
Sharon “is a war criminal who should be in prison, not in office“, he wrote, saying that even an Israeli commission had blamed the prime minister for deadly massacres at Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.
The mayor also denounced &#8220ethnic cleansing“ of Palestinians during the expansion of the Israeli state, Israeli settlements in the territories and the denial of the Palestinians’ right to return.
“Sharon continues to organize terror,“ he said, citing the disproportionate number of Palestinians killed compared to Israelis during the Intifada or Palestinian uprising.
Livingstone argued that it was necessary to separate criticism of Israeli policies from anti-Semitism, saying the Israeli government deliberately attempted to conflate the two.
The Israeli government has for the past 20 years &#8220attempted to portray anyone who forcefully criticizes the policies of Israel as anti-Semitic. The truth is the opposite: the same universal human values that recognize the Holocaust as the greatest racist crime of the 20th century require condemnation of the policies of successive Israeli governments,&#8220 he wrote.<br> Livingstone&#8217s comments came as a response to criticism printed a day earlier in The Guardian by the head of Board of Deputies of British Jews, Henry Grunwald.<br> Grunwald said that the mayor had &#8220let his office down&#8220 and should apologize for comments made to Oliver Finegold, a reporter for the Evening Standard, a paper which Livingstone considers hostile to him.<br> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=center> <hr width=o100%o> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=center> <div class=surtitle1> </div> <div class=title11> Fossett Completes Global Solo Flight <br> </div> <div class=subtitle1> </div> <div class=detail1> <table class=RightImage border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 width=340> <tr> <td align=Right> <img src="017643.jpg" border=1 width=340 height=224 alt="017643.jpg"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <div class=caption1> Adventurer Steve Fossett climbs out of the cockpit on the runway at Salina, Kansas, March 3. Achievement <br> </div> <div class=subtitle1> By Q.T. Khamesi<br> </div> <div class=detail1> There is universal consensus that when it comes to sustainable development, decisions are more important than resources.<br> Iran is blessed with vast resources and comparative advantage in wide areas. We have an abundance of fertile land and mineral resources. Our history, civilization and climatic conditions are envied by many in and outside the region.<br> Iranians have engaged in trade since time immemorial. We are the second richest country in the world in terms of oil and gas. We have everything for progress and prosperity, but are far from advancement. Why? <br> Because our resources itself cannot ensure efficient utilization or lead higher value added. This is the duty of competent managers and a systemic code of performance.<br> The people are the ones who ultimately make decisions about how to use resources. <br> Karoun-3 which was inaugurated Wednesday, is not just another dam in Khuzestan. It is a glorious piece of structure and the tallest of its kind in the country. But, this is not of major significance. Similarly, it is not important what complications the dam encountered, which major contractors were involved, how it will irrigate endless plains, the amount of energy it will produce...<br> Karoun-3 is symbolic of a right decision. Many plans and grand ideas have remained on paper for over half a century. President Mohammad Khatami inaugurated Karoun-3. His presidency ends in less than 6 months. He will be remembered as a politician and cultural authority, though often embattled, but at the service of the people. <br> Khatami, like all our other presidents, has his own strong and weak points. During his electoral campaign in 1997, Khatami had said cultural issues were more important for him and that he was not too familiar with economics. He wanted to make a breakthrough in the political arena, but his administration was bogged down with economic challenges.<br> His positive points are indeed many and unprecedented. Ratification of the Third Economic Development Plan (2000-05) was the most momentous decision of his cabinet. The plan helped make our outdated economic system compatible with today&#8217s needs. <br> Khatami eliminated barriers to foreign trade and pushed through investment-friendly legislation.<br> His team devised the single parity rate for foreign exchange, paved the way for private banking and removed the monopoly in the money market. Khatami merged parallel institutions in the commerce sector and thus got rid of monopolies undermining this key sector. <br> Furthermore, his cabinet worked for and improved transparency of government expenditures and those of affiliated companies, and the industrial sector registered 10 percent growth in 2000-05. <br> Khatami proposed new laws for mines and insisted on the new foreign investment laws to stimulate growth and created jobs. The hard currency reserve fund was one of his better-known achievements along with several water-related projects. <br> Before Khatami took over in 1997, 36 large dams had been built in the country. In the year of his departure the country will have 85 large dams. The next government will inherit projects for 86 more large dams now under construction. <br> Thus, timely and effective decisions are at the core of these achievements. If the government had not made these decisions and funding for the water sector had not quadrupled, progress in one of the most important areas related to development would be a distant cry.<br> It is fair to say that Karoun-3 is the epitome of all decisions made in recent years. First a decision is made and then the funds are made available. Resources can be utilized effectively if and when sound decisions exist. The point is that in all strategic endeavors the ruling political system must be democratic and progressive.<br> Karoun-3 is identified with a democratic and responsible government. If it were otherwise, it would not have made efforts to control the water resources needed for industrial and agricultural growth. <br> Governments alien to democracy and its values seldom allocate funds for macro projects they know will not be inaugurated during their tenure. Karoun-3 is one of those major achievements for which history and posterity will remember the Khatami administration. <br> </div> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> <!-- End Perspec --> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <!-- Begin Bottom TOC --> <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width="100%"> <tr> <td> <hr width="100%"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=center> <div class=htoc> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/index.htm">Front Page</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/national.htm">National</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/economy.htm">Domestic Economy</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/science.htm">Science</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/panorama.htm">Panorama</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/focus.htm">Economic Focus</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/dotcoms.htm">Dot Coms</a> | <br> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/energy.htm">Global Energy</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/politic.htm">World Politics</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/sports.htm">Sports</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/ieconomy.htm">International Economy</a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/art.htm">Arts & Culture</a> | <br> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=center> <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0> <tr> <td> <hr width="100%"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td align=center> <div class=htoc> | <a class=htoc href="../../../1383/2228/html/index.htm#Identification"> Identification </a> | <a class=htoc href="../../../archive.htm"> Archive </a> | </div> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> <!-- End Bottom TOC --> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <!-- Begin Bottom --> <hr width="100%"> <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=1 width="100%"> <tr> <td align=left valign=top width="50%"> <div class=footer> Copyright 2004, Iran Daily Newspaper <br> </div> </td> <td align=right valign=top width="50%"> <div class=footer> Contact us: <a href="#" ONCLICK='window.open("../../../feedback.htm","popup","width=500,height=500,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,resizable=no,scrollbars=yes,status=no,toolbar=no");return false'>iran-daily@iran-daily.com</a><br> </div> </td> </tr> </table> <!-- End Bottom --> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
