Tarquin’s Unreal

Home of Tarquin's various brush builders.

5 January 2005...

Some New Year goodies for you: my brushbuilders have been recompiled for Tribes Vengeance and Postal 2. You'll find them on the downloads page under "other games".

15 June 2004...

My brushbuilders have been recompiled for UT2004. Thanks to ja8t3d. There's also a UMOD version that installs all three packs, courtesy of rlbond. You can find them on the downloads page.

10 February 2004...

I've been informed by dandeloreon1984 that he's recompiled my tools for Unreal 2 XMP. You can find them on the downloads page.

11 June 2003...

I thought this was just spam when I checked my email today. But it seems someone saw the diagrams of the spiral stair builder and didn't quite get what it was about.

16 May 2003...

Thanks to ZxAnPhOrIaN for compiling the Extended Brushbuilders Pack for UnrealEd 3. Go grab it from the downloads page.

31 January 2003...

The Unreal Wiki was one year old yesterday. And I've redesigned this site. Yeah, it's a sort of pistachio colour. Dark colours are so last year. I've added new download mirrors for the packs.

24 November 2002...

As requested by Doc_EDo, here's the Extruder builder recompiled for UnrealEd 3: Download tarquinextrudebuilder080a.zip from FilePlanet. I've noticed the menu above is about as useful as (insert cliché here), so I guess I'll have to work on a Mk3 design of this site. I doubt it'll be anytime soon though, so you're stuck with the links at the foot of the page.

24 November 2002...

Unreal Tomorrow is running a feature on the Jailbreak mod, and today they're interviewing me! Apparently, I'm like "steak cooked in the microwave". Interesting!

10 November 2002...

Thanks again to Slick Willy for the following installation instructions for the 100a pack:

  1. Shutdown UnrealEd if running...
  2. Unpack the TarquinBrushBuildersUED3.u into your UT2003\system folder
  3. Unpack all the .BMP files into your UT2003\system\editorres folder
  4. Open up the UT2003\system\UT2003.ini file in notepad
  5. Scroll down to the section labeled [UnrealEd.UnrealEdEngine]
  6. add this line to the end of the EditPackages entries:

    EditPackages=TarquinBrushBuildersUED3

  7. Start UnrealEd3 up and you should now see the new brushbuilders on the left
I now have UT2003 as of last Thursday. Wow. Mapping for this is either going to be so cool or diabolical. I'll rip out the scripts from the spot above the fireplace where I plastered them in and see what sort of state they're in. As far as I remember, there's a multi-level cone builder and a sphere builder in addition to slightly souped up original 4. Oh, one thing: is the panorama builder still useful now we have static mesh rocks and terrain in skyboxes? I'll start a thread on that somewhere...

1 November 2002...

Many thanks to Slick Willy, who writes to inform me that he's recompiled the Tarquin Brushbuilder Pack for use with UnrealEd 3. Let's call it version 100a. I still haven't got my hands on UT2003 (anyone wishing to send me forty quid ... ;-) when I do, I'll try to tidy up what's sitting on my hard drive and release, hm, well, version 101turnip or something.

9 October 2002...

I haven't got UT2003 yet, just the demo, so I haven't had a chance to get to grips with the brave new world of mapping. I'd appreciate a line (or heck, post on my forum) from anyone who knows if my brushbuilder packs work with UnrealEd 3. More importantly — with static meshes and Maya, are the custom brushbuilders still useful?
A load of custom brushbuilders have sprouted up in the last six months or so: see the list on the Unreal Wiki.

26 June 2002...

Yes the site looks lousy. A bag of doubloons to anyone who can work out why the line "background: #006;" in the stylesheet has an effect on the page from my hard drive, but not on the identical page fed from the server.

8 June 2002...

The new & improved brushbuilders are going well. There's a slim chance they'll be out before UT2k3 hits the shelves.
In other news, the Unreal Wiki has recently welcomed its 50th contributor. Finally, my revamp of Daikiki's classic Jailbreak map LostFalls is going well.

30 October 2001...

New site design – site forum hosted at BeyondUnreal – unhappy events in personal life – beta release of my first map for UT jailbreak, JB-Pressurized.
(This news item was brought to you in the style of Jules Verne chapter titles)

28 May 2001...

Build 080 of the Extrude Builder is released. This adds a couple of extra commands, a new extrude type which I'm not sure is terribly good but what the heck, it was only 4 lines of code, and a randomising thingy. This last feature will make rough brushes for caves and things. I've also somewhat revamped the list of things to avoid, which is now on its own page, all-singing, all-dancing with pictures in fabulous technicolor.

20 April 2001...

Build 078 of the Extrude Builder is released. This adds a whole load of features.
Also, parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial are now available.

9 April 2001...

I'm releasing build 075 of the Extrude Builder, which most notably adds preset shapes. This should make it a little easier to use.
There's also now a tutorial which will guide you through the first steps in using this tool. I hope this will give some idea of what is possible with it.

6 April 2001...

Welcome to Tarquin's UT page, now hosted by PlanetUnreal. It's just a couple of months since I launched the Tarquin BrushBuilder Pack on an unsuspecting UT editing community, and it's certainly generated a lot of interest. Members of the PlanetUnreal forums often post screenshots of UEd to a thread, and lately they've all had those four little purple icons in the toolbox – I just don't get tired of seeing that!
I've delayed the launch of the site at PU for some time, to get the new stuff ready...

The Extended Brush Builder Pack

Builds a cube with skewing options.
Builds wavy terrain.

Tarquin's Extrude Builder

This is still at the experimental stage. I'm confident that it works in the way it's supposed to, but I'll say this now: it doesn't win any awards for ease of use. Having said that, go get!

Builds anything (almost!)

If I may say so myself, the holy grail of Unreal editing. (Well, maybe that's a little much. See for yourself.)

The update of the original Tarquin Brush Builder Pack is still on the way! Stop by the plans page to see forthcoming features. If you've emailed me suggesting something, chances are it will be included.
