    PINEHURST - One of the most unique U.S. Opens in its storied history came to a thrilling conclusion Sunday when Payne Stewart rolled in a 20-foot par-saving putt on the 18th hole to edge Phil Mickelson by one stroke on the No. 2 course at Pinehurst.

    Stewart, so painfully denied his second Open title last year by faltering in the final round at Olympic, became only the third player in history to follow a second-place finish with a victory the next (the others being Bob Jones in 1926 and 1929, and Jack Nicklaus in 1972).
