Tony Blair spurns honour system

Tony Blair has distanced himself from the honours system, letting it be known that he is not interested in the traditional knighthood or peerage bestowed on former prime ministers.

Mr Blair has also given up on the idea of a resignation honours list to reward those he was closest to in government, insiders say.

This makes him the first former premier in modern times not to have a list.

Friends say Mr Blair's diffidence comes as a result of the cash for peerages row, which wounded his government.

A senior insider said: "There are a few names but in terms of a resignation list it is clear that there will not be one. Nor have we seen any indication that Blair himself is agitating for an honour."

Friends say Mr Blair has immersed himself in his role as Middle East envoy and that "he has moved on."
