Archetypes are original patterns that identify human personalities, beliefs, and motivations. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato believed that all things exist as shadows of their ideal forms, now understood to be archetypes. Later, Dr. Carl Jung, a reputable psychologist, researched the concept and leveraged on the patterns in his theory of the human psyche. He developed the 12 Jungian archetypes as a model for understanding the human mind's primary motivations and operations.
Each archetype contains profound insights into our emotions, thoughts, and actions. All the 12 archetypes are known to invoke a mixture of emotional attachments and mental images, with each possessing its distinctive set of meanings, personality traits, and values. The imageries and emotions would also have different meanings depending on the person experiencing them.
Cardinal Orientations
It's noteworthy to examine first each of the cardinal orientations of these archetypes. The orientations are representatives of archetype's focus. Understanding them will help you better hold on the hidden motivations and self-perceiving dynamics of each personality archetype. There are four cardinal orientations:
- Ego. Involves leaving a mark or making an implication on the globe.
- Order. Entails providing some form of structure or orderliness to the world.
- Social. Involves working hard to form friendly relations with others.
- Freedom. The longing to recognize its sense of paradise.
The 12 Jungian Archetypes
Carl Jung defined the only 12 main archetypes that have remained invariable. These include:
The Caregiver
This is a kindhearted altruist whose self-sacrifice comes unmatched. They're ever willing to assist those around them- friends, strangers, or even enemies. Their kindness inspires all and makes receivers feel appreciative.
The Creator
This archetype claims to be completely original. The boasting of those in this group depends on the ability to be creative in everyday life and attaining goals that they've set. They are continuously paving ways for others to follow.
The Explorer
This is an adventurer who wants to leave a legacy in the world and discover new lands. The explorer has high regard for his or her freedom. They always anticipate adventure and enjoy unique experiences. Thus, relaxing even for a short time makes them restless, nervous, and uneasy.
The Hero
Persons who identify with this archetype happen to feel the urge to prove their worth by performing courageous acts. They flourish on bravado and seek every chance to display their dreadful sense of boldness. This is what defines a typical hero.
The Jester
This is a Jungian archetype that only lives for the moment. The people find nothing satisfying more than experiencing emotions to the full. The Jester has an infectious laugh and a lot of jokes. "Fun" is the middle name, and there's an insatiable desire for it.
The Innocent
They are typically naive and impressed by anything and everything making them dazzling audiences for performances. Even so, the naivety is not what defines them; instead, they are best described by absolute positivity and optimism.
The Lover
This archetype might seem surprising to some at first glance. However, it is connected less with romance and sexuality and has much to do with loyalty and commitment. It revolves widely around feelings, sensuality, and emotions.
The Magician
Magicians' deep connections with the universe make them hard to understand. They tend to possess a strong belief in their abilities, dreams, and themselves in general.
The Member
This is the most exciting archetype in society. Such individuals are the building blocks of the world and those who restore faith in humanity. The unique attribute of these people is their ability to mingle with any thinkable group.
The outlaw
This is best described as free-spirited and free-minded. The outlaw genuinely represents what it is to be your own boss. Nothing stands in their way and controls their desires.
The Sage
They are knowledge and wisdom seekers. Generally, everything they experience in life is a lesson for them, and they're capable of identifying the incomprehensible meanings behind every event in their lives.
The Ruler
People of this archetype have an outstanding trait of leading. They are comfortable with taking charge even when others avoid such roles. It's their quality of leadership that defines them and not the desire to lead.
Each of these archetypes has a slogan, goal, strategy, weaknesses, talents, and deepest desire. If you identify with any of them, you can learn more about them from the individualogist website.
How Do We Experience Jungian Archetypes?
Archetypes are experienced as energies. They are expressed through non-tangible elements like conjuring imagery and evoking emotions. At times, we feel overwhelmed with special powers, but we can't precisely describe them. For instance, the Hero's energies can drive us to train our minds and follow what we want while the Jester's powers influence us to input humor into serious situations.
It would be simplistic to claim that every person's personality is composed of only one archetype. Human beings are more complicated than that, and numerous archetypes can form the core of our characters. Even so, only one pattern tends to dominate our personality and is called the primary personality archetype. Understanding it can help us determine which energy governs our feelings and thoughts; thus, we get to know the hidden constructs of psyche and personality.
Why You Should Use Jungian Archetypes
The benefits of understanding the archetypes and analyzing them include:
- You will be able to know and obtain your destiny
- You will find your wholeness
- You will be free from the crowd consciousness

The Bottom
We strive to make others happy and end up forgetting our desires. That can make us feel unwanted and ignored. Analyzing the archetypes is a door that lets us know what we want, improve ourselves, and find our purpose in life.
