MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search
The following instructions were copied from mw:Extension:Title Blacklist.

The title blacklist is maintained as a system message MediaWiki:Titleblacklist.

This page consists of regular expressions, each on a separate line. For example:

Foo <autoconfirmed|noedit|errmsg=blacklisted-testpage>
Bar #No one should create article about it

There is no need to use "^" at the beginning and "$" at the end; these are added automatically.

Each entry may also contain optional attributes, enclosed in <> and divided by |

  • autoconfirmed — only non-autoconfirmed users are unable to create/upload/move such pages
  • noedit — users are also unable to edit this article
  • casesensitive — don't ignore case when checking title for being blacklisted
  • errmsg — the name of the message that should be displayed instead of standard

When the action is blocked, one of the following messages is displayed together with the filter row (as $1): titleblacklist-forbidden-edit, titleblacklist-forbidden-move, titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account or titleblacklist-forbidden-upload. Generic filenames have their own custom error message, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-imagename.

There is also MediaWiki:Titlewhitelist and a global title blacklist.

Only administrators and template editors can override this list on all actions. Account creators can override this list on account creations only.

Add George Zink into title blacklist[edit]

See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Anika86p, lot of socks keeps on recreating it under other titles. 2A02:C7F:963F:BA00:1C30:1B8B:229F:3228 (talk) 17:13, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

Why was a name blacklisted?[edit]

In general is there a way to find out why an article name was blacklisted? Kendall-K1 (talk) 20:30, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Prem Khan[edit]

Hey all, is there a way to prevent creation of articles about Prem Khan? This has been an ongoing issue for a few years. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Washim Rahman (and the related archive linked therein). Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

put .*prem.*khan.* in spam titles Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:40, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Great, thank you. Regex frightens me. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:50, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Protected edit request on 28 June 2018[edit]

Add mentions of "Danny Lorraine" and star sizes to the list. Those are targeted by this vandal; also see Sockpuppet investigations. 203.173.245.76 (talk) 06:25, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Not done yet. Please provide diffs showing why those two strings should be added, I couldn't find any in the contributions of that person's socks, but I didn't go through every contribution. Fish+Karate 11:27, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

IP talk pages blocked from moves[edit]

See thread at WP:VPT#IP talk page blacklisted?. An IP created their talk page at an incorrect location, so I attempted to move it to the correct location (User talk:2600:1002:B00A:E4EB:F021:E054:2B2F:4C37). A rule preventing more than nine consecutive capital letters prevented this move. I suggest an exception for this rule when it comes to user/user talk pages. Home Lander (talk) 02:10, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Not done @Home Lander: you are referring to this right? That should have just been speedy deleted. As for your edit request, I assume you are referring to .*\p{Lu}(\P{L}*\p{Lu}){9}.* <casesensitive | moveonly> # Disallows moves with more than nine consecutive capital letters; however you did not provide a specific edit change that you would make so that this could be completed. This section can certainly be used to discuss this rule in general though. — xaosflux Talk 02:55, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: When I first came upon the page, I overlooked the extra stuff at the end of the title, so thinking I was just at the user's talk page already, I overwrote the content with a warning about it. It was after that I noticed that the title was incorrect, so I tried to move it. Yes, that is the line that I'm told prevented the page move. This line is potentially problematic, as shown here, because it prevents page moves to user talks of IP addresses that meet this rule. Home Lander (talk) 03:02, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

This issue can be fixed by adding User( talk)?:.*\p{Lu}(\P{L}*\p{Lu}){9}.* <casesensitive | moveonly> to MediaWiki:Titlewhitelist. SD0001 (talk) 14:51, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Exception for Bayer designations[edit]

Bayer designations for stars in the constellation Boötes take the form of a Greek letter followed by the genitive form of the constellation name which is Boötis. Article titles consisting of a Greek letter in combination with non-latin characters are currently blacklisted. The star articles themselves are conventionally titled using the spelled-out form of the Green letter (eg. lambda for λ, lambda Boötis) but it is standard practice to provide a redirect from the name containing the Greek letter (eg. λ Boötis, especially useful for stars with proper names (eg. Arcturus). An exception would be helpful to allow this. If this could be general enough to allow derivations, for example λ Boötis star as a redirect to lambda Boötis star, that would be even better. Lithopsian —Preceding undated comment added 10:13, 24 August 2018

  • I'm guessing you hit the same blacklist entry I did - Latin + non-Latin. As a workaround, I believe admins can override the blacklist. Hairy Dude (talk) 02:17, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
There are potentially a whole bunch of redirects required, so it might be a bit much to ask of the admins. See Template:Stars of Boötes for a list of Bayer stars in that constellation (25 of them?), plus a handful of related classes. Lithopsian (talk) 13:18, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
If you provide a list of the 25 redirects (with targets) that you would like created, I will do it. — JJMC89(T·C) 02:58, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
Good news, several of them already exist. They're lower-case Greek letters, for what that's worth on a redirect. Lithopsian (talk) 14:23, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

ʻOkina again[edit]

I just tried to move Punalu'u Beach to Punaluʻu Beach, but I hit the following filter:

  • (?!(User|Wikipedia)( talk)?:|Talk:)\P{L}*\p{Latin}.*[^\p{Latin}\P{L}].* <moveonly> # Latin + non-Latin

If I'm reading this right, this bans titles that combine Latin and non-Latin script, but only when moving. This is bizarre - ʻokina is definitely part of the Latin script for Hawaiian. I note that this subject was brought up here previously (2012) but nothing was done. Hairy Dude (talk) 02:10, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

There's also a request at WP:RM/TR to move Keaweʻopala to Keaweʻōpala over a redirect, but I can't move it because it says the redirect is on the title blacklist. Station1 (talk) 19:29, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
done; template editors and admins can do it. I suppose it might be possible to add okina to the latin characters in that regex or add it to the Mediawiki:Titlewhitelist, at-least if this comes up often enough. Galobtter (pingó mió) 19:44, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
I encountered several okina moves last month. This is a problem because it required marking for administrator attention, but the moves were eventually completed. — Frayæ (Talk/Spjall) 22:14, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Remove the ʻOkina symbol from the pagemove prevention filter rule discussed above. — Frayæ (Talk/Spjall) 18:17, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

[V]arious apostrophe(-like) variants (’ʻ ʾ ʿ ᾿ ῾ ‘ ’ c), should generally not be used in page titles. That includes the ʻokina. — JJMC89(T·C) 20:57, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
I suggest you start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Article titles. If there is consensus that 'okina is acceptable for article titles, then we can get the rule removed here. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:43, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
The okina is widely used in article titles and there have been multiple technical requests to put the okina into titles, these were completed. Special:Permalink/855300030 is one such request. The okina is widely used in titles such as Oʻzbekiston Jumhuriyati, Oʻahu nukupuʻu, Oʻahu ʻōʻō, and others. — Frayæ (Talk/Spjall) 14:50, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
