User Guide


● Borrowing books for the first time (user registration)
 It is required that you are register as a user in order to borrow items.
The library card is common across at all KawasakiCity libraries.
Please bring the “Application for Library Card” form with all necessary items filled in, as well as a document which proves your name and address (health insurance card, drivers’ license, etc.) to the counter.
For those who live outside of but work or attend school within KawasakiCity, please bring a document (employee ID/Student ID) which proves the workplace/school which you commute to.
* Every 3 years your address will be re-confirmed
* You are able to continue to use your current library card if there are no changes to your details.
* In the case that confirmations have not been made, restrictions may apply to borrowing and making reservations.

● Loaning
 At all city libraries, up to 10 books/magazines and 3 CDs may be borrowed for a period of 2 weeks. Please bring your library card and items you wish to borrow to the “Loaning and Returns Counter”.
 【Items that can not be loaned】
Reference books such as dictionaries/encyclopedias (items with brown back labels), local/government materials (items with green back labels) and latest editions of magazines. Please use these items within the library.

● Extending the due date of loaned items
 In the case that you have not finished reading the borrowed items by the return due date, you are able to extend the loaning period for the items once.
Please bring the borrowed items and library card to the Loaning Counter, and make aware that you would like to “extend”.
* Extensions can not be granted on; items that have reservations, CDs, items borrowed from another City, items that are more than 2 weeks overdue the return date.
In order to extend the loaning period via the internet or library user search machine, it is required that you input your library card number and password.
* Extensions can not be requested to the library via phone or fax.

● Returns
 Please bring borrowed items to the “Returns Counter” by the due date.
You are able to return borrowed items at any of the KawasakiCity libraries.
* When the library is closed, place the items you borrowed in the “return post”.
* CD, CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) as apart of an item’s appendix or items borrowed from another City, etc.
must be handed to the “returns counter” and can not be placed in the “return post”.
 【New usage restrictions in relation to the return of prolonged overdue items】
If borrowed items are overdue by 35 days, counting from the day following the due date, you will not be able to borrow, make new reserves or requests on other items.
You will also not be able to borrow items that you ordered to be reserved or requested.
Once the overdue items are returned you will be able to borrow, reserve and request as normal.
If borrowed items are overdue by 49 days, counting from the day following the due date, all reserve or requests made will be cancelled.
Furthermore, from the day you return the overdue items, you will not be able to borrow, reserve or request for 50 days thereafter.
(If you have additional overdue items at the point of 35 days, counting from the day following the due date, once all overdue items are returned, you will not be able to borrow, reserve or request for 50 days thereafter).

● Reserve/Requests
 You are able to reserve up to 10 books/magazines and 3 CDs.
The pick-up period is for 10 days following the items being arranged.
* Once the pick-up period has lapsed and the items have not been borrowed, the reserve/request will be cancelled.
* Reserve/request can not be made for items that have not been published yet.
* “Reserve” is a service available to; people who live, work or attend school within Kawasaki City, people who live in municipalities that have a mutual user agreement (Inagi City, Komae City) with Kawasaki City libraries, people affiliated to universities which have a mutual user agreement with Kawasaki City libraries.
* “Request” is a service only available to people who live, work or attend school within Kawasaki City.

● How to confirm reserves
 Through the following methods you are able to confirm regarding reserves.
1) Contact via e-mail
For those who have designated e-mail as the contact method, an e-mail will be sent upon the reserved item being arranged.
Also, if the reserve was made via the homepage, the two types of email as below will be sent:
1. Reserve received - item has not been arranged yet.
2. Reserve item has been arranged.
2) Confirm by yourself
For those who have not designated e-mail as the contact method, please regularly confirm the reserve situation by yourself.
3) Present your library card at the Loaning and Returns Counter
You can confirm the reserve at the library counter. Please present your library card to do so.

● Regarding Password
 A “password” function is available on the library homepage and library user search machine (common across all libraries).
The user is identified by entering their “password” and their personal details are secured.
Passwords can be issued via the “library homepage” or “library user search machine”.
In the case that you forget your password, it can be re-issued through these two outlets.
*Re-issuing a password via the “library homepage” or “library user search machine” may not be possible in the case that your registration information is inadequate.

● Regarding Personal Information
 Libraries will protect personal information.
