Celebrates an individual, collective or organization that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to engaging St. Catharines residents through arts education activities.

2017 Arts in Education Award Nominees

  • Kasia Dupuis - Educator, artist, and owner of 4Cats Studio in St. Catharines. Blends art, creativity and education in our community for the past six years.
  • Mendelt Hoekstra - Founder, musical conductor/artistic director and executive director of MOMENTUM Choir, a group of uniquely talented adult musicians with developmental disabilities, the first choir of its kind in Canada.
  • Rodman Hall Art Centre - Leading centre for visual arts education and creative expression in St. Catharines, with talented staff who connect the community with contemporary art through exhibits, special events and classes.

Emerging Artist Award

Sponsored by the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Brock University

Two emerging St. Catharines artists working in any discipline will be recognized, celebrating current accomplishments and future potential.

2017 Emerging Artist Award Nominees

  • David Green - A 'clean' comedian who specializes in puns and wordplay. Promoter and host of the bi-weekly amateur nights at Showtime Comedy Club.
  • James Millhaven - Part of the Niagara literary scene for years. Resume includes three published chapbooks, play produced at the In The Soil Arts Festival and active in various reading series.
  • Jo Pacinda - Recent Brock University theatre graduate now based in St. Catharines, working as costume designer and assistant costume designer with most local theatre companies.
  • Lauren Regier - Recent Brock University visual arts graduate who is exploring the relationship between nature and machines through photography, video, performance and installation art.
  • Twitches and Itches - A multi-disciplinary artist ensemble devoted to creating new theatre works through a collaborative process.
  • Lacie Williamson - Self-taught artist and art instructor, festival co-chair and managing curator at the #24 James St. Studio Gallery.

Established Artist Award

For a professional St. Catharines artist in any discipline who has received critical recognition for excellence in their art practice in St. Catharines and beyond. 

2017 Established Artist Award Nominees

  • Jessica Carmichael - Director, dramaturge, actor, playwright and drama educator. Arts education and student involvement in the arts is a core tenet of her work as artistic director of Carousel Players.
  • Gordon Cleland - Principal cellist of the Niagara Symphony, Brock University professor, instructor with Suzuki Niagara and the Niagara Youth Orchestra, and a featured performer across North America.
  • Patricia LaRiviere - An actor who has toured locally, nationally and internationally. She's graced the local stage with Essential Collective Theatre, Carousel Players and Theatre Beyond Words.
  • Danielle Wilson - Full time Brock University theatre professor who has worked across Canada as actor, voice and acting teacher and director. Co-founder and co-artistic director of Stolen Theatre Collective.

Making A Difference Award

Celebrates a St. Catharines arts entrepreneur, arts administrator, arts organization, arts animator or volunteer in the arts whose leadership and innovation have significantly contributed to the growth and development of arts and culture in St. Catharines.

2017 Making A Difference Award Nominees

  • Gregory Betts - Poet, author, teacher, and a tireless advocate for literature in St. Catharines; Artistic director and founder of the Festival of Readers.
  • Marcie Bronson - Acting director and curator of Rodman Hall Art Centre, playing a central role in the transformation of Rodman Hall into a nationally recognized institution of excellence that promotes local artists.
  • Alice Burke - After a life in dance, as performer and instructor, Burke moved to St. Catharines and now instructs at studios across the region and advocates for the collaborative benefits of the arts.
  • Mendelt Hoekstra - Founder, musical conductor/artistic director and executive director of MOMENTUM Choir, a group of uniquely talented adult musicians with developmental disabilities, the first choir of its kind in Canada.
  • Kate Leathers - Combines a technical theatre career with arts management consultancy, working as administrator, project manager and theatre technician. Leathers is the incoming general manager of Carousel Players.
  • Rob Robbins - Owner/operator of Live on Request and senior technical supervisor at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, providing audio and video support for notable figures, local events and soundscapes for every environment imaginable.
  • Start Me Up Niagara - Art Me Up explores the creativity of the most vulnerable through art crawls, daily workshops and collaborative exhibits with the Niagara Artists' Centre and City Hall.

Patron of the Arts Award

For an individual or business that has made a meaningful contribution to the arts in St. Catharines through innovative, transformative, and entrepreneurial partnerships or philanthropic investments.

  • Emerging Artists (2) - a $500 cheque and civic certificate of appreciation
  • Patron of the Arts - a beautifully hand-crafted St. Catharines Arts Award and a $500 contribution to be directed to an artist or arts organization of the recipient's choice

First presented in 2005, the Arts Awards celebrate St. Catharines' artists and cultural industries, honour cultural leaders and their achievements, and cultivate support for the arts sector. Arts Award recipients demonstrate St. Catharines' breadth of talent and commitment to the arts.
