About the Author

From Sakura Publishing's Official Website... "Thomas Whaley was born in 1972 and has lived on Long Island his entire life. Since early childhood, he always enjoyed writing as a pastime, whether it be poems, short stories or funny scripts for his friends to act out. Most importantly, Thomas loved to entertain those around him, especially children. This eventually led him to change his career path from working in The Big Apple to becoming an elementary school teacher at the age of 27. Since becoming a teacher in 1999, Thomas has taken his childhood pastime to the next level, authoring several children’s books and sharing them with his students and his own children. Thomas has always enjoyed reading books, but particularly those that make him casually self-reflect or hysterically laugh at the idiosyncrasies of daily life. This is what inspired him to finally sit down and write Leaving Montana. Thomas currently lives in Shoreham, New York with his husband Carl, their two sons Andrew and Luke, and their loyal dog Jake. Thomas is currently a member of the SCBWI, NAMW and LIAWS.”

This is a great read. It's the type of book you can't put down. The story line is so well written, and we can all relate to it at some point in our lives. You want to laugh, cry and sometimes outright scream. Hoping we will see more books from this writer.

For a lot of you who know me, know that I don't really post a lot of book reviews on my blog. I love books - it's just that I need more time to read them! But when I come across a book that I feel is truly special and unique, I have to spread the word; and this is exactly how I felt after I read Tom's book, Leaving Montana.

Tom and I met through Facebook and I featured him on my blog a while ago. We both had our book releases this month - only three days apart. Tom sent me his book as a thank you for the feature. (I know I still owe you mine, Tom!) His book had been sitting on my "must-read" pile for a couple of weeks. Just to give you a snapshot of the pile - there are currently 16 books on the armchair in my room that I need to read. (Damn you Amazon One-Click!)

Tom has been promoting his book all over the internet. I read an excerpt that he posted, and I was hooked. I tore into the book that same night. I finished it the next day. I couldn't put it down. Honestly, that doesn't happen to me very often. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I blew off my work for a book. (And the last Harry Potter is included in that handful.) Tom's book is that good.

I immediately disliked Benjamin, the main character, for his arrogance. But I also immediately liked him because he was honest about his arrogance. From the minute Benjamin woke up early in the morning to catch his flight to Montana, I had to know why. Why did he want to visit a place that was filled with so many unhappy memories for his parents?

I also had a ton of questions about Benjamin's parents. On one page, they're getting a divorce. The next page, they're back together. They go back and forth for years. Why? What keeps them together?

Leaving Montana is a remarkable and immersing novel. It takes the reader on a riveting journey that conjures a myriad of emotions along the way. From outrage and anguish to relief and contentment, everybody can relate to this book on a human level. I could not put this book down while reading it, and I honestly did not want it to end when I was done. I eagerly await future titles from this author, and I highly recommend that you purchase this one.

I felt like I was reading about my own family. The author made the characters feel so real that I cried, winced, cringed, and ducked with every fight. I just wanted to grab young Benjamin and take him out of that toxic home. The flow between the past and present was seemless. Some books over complicate the story with unnecessary details or characters. This book flows naturally, almost like you were actually watching Benjamin's life unfold before you. I really LOVED the ending, I felt his peace. I anxiously wait for Mr Whaley's next novel ;-)

For the most part, the book was well written and gave an excellent message: Don't take personally what others say or do, and don't allow yourself to be drawn into others' drama. (The book appears to be at least partially autobiographical.)

However, I do not understand how this book could have received several awards; the judges apparently don't know proper English grammar. Doesn't anyone proofread?

I would have rated the book a 5 if not for the numerous errors.

Colombian, NOT Columbian.
Inappropriate use of dashes where there should be commas.
There is a reference to hunting deer with a shotgun. No, no!
Several errors with the verb "to lay." Lay low...just lay here, etc. Arrrrgh!
Numerous uses of "could care less." To "care less" means that one still has some interest in the matter. Correct is "couldn't care less."
"felt badly" - should be "felt bad." You don't feel badly unless your hands are damaged.
"alright" -- all right. Technically "alright" is not a word.
"I did not want to SCAR any more housekeepers."
"coffee clutch"...coffee klatch
back to back cups...back-to-back cups
"she allowed my Aunt and I..."wanted to speak with Max and I"... Arrrrgh! She allowed I?...wanted to speak with I?
Many uses of "try and." This is commonly used but it is incorrect. Substitute "try" with "attempt" and see how that works!
"twenty-somethings" not "twenty something's"
etc.

Again, doesn't anyone proofread? Quentin Whitfield is listed as the editor. He is clearly unqualified to be an editor.
