  • subtitlesGRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
  • subtitlesABSTRACT

This paper is focused on the comparative LPG sensing performances of bulk titanium dioxide and the synthesized TiO2 through hydrolysis of TiCl3 . The mean value sensitivity for different volume percentages (1-5%) of LPG has been estimated. Sensor response as a function of exposure time and response time has also been calculated. The average sensitivity and sensor response of the sensing element made of Titania synthesized through hydrolysis of TiCl3 are found to be maximum 3.0 and 318 respectively for 5 vol.% of LPG. Response time of the sensor was 70 sec. SEM images show that synthesized TiO2 is more porous than the obtained from Qualigens before exposure to the LPG. The minimum crystallites size of the purchased TiO2 and synthesized TiO2 are found to be 65 nm and 18 nm respectively. XRD patterns divulge that TiO2 is tetragonal and crystalline in nature. The device response was found to be concentration dependent, slow at low concentration and fast at higher concentrations.

☑ Heavy Metal uptake from Industrial Effluents using Natural Zeolitic Aluminosilicates

Marina G. Xavier and Samuel F. Banda

Department of Chemistry, University of Zambia, P.O. Box 32379, Lusaka, Zambia

  • subtitlesABSTRACT

The uses of zeolites derive from their special properties: They can interact with water to adsorb or release ions (ion exchange); they can selectively adsorb ions that fit the cavities in their structures (molecular sieves). The locally available zeolite samples have been proved to have application in reducing toxic waste and causes driven by environmental concern and energy consumption. Cation-containing zeolites can differentiate molecules on the basis of their electrostatic interactions with the metal ions, size difference, shape and polarity. The adsorption properties of certain specific pore sized zeolites are useful for size selective separation of molecules. The high cation exchange capacity of zeolites as evident from our studies combined with their selective affinity for specific cations make them uniquely suited to various application in disposal of Industrial effluents like Cu, Cr, Co, Zn etc. The heavy metal ions were quantified using atomic absorption spectroscopy before and after the process of adsorption. This promising adsorbent is found to exhibit 90% adsorption efficiency with most of the heavy metals.

☑ Stability criterion for time-delay 3-dimension damped Mathieu equation

Yusry O.El-Dib

Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Education,Ain Shams University, Roxy, Egypt

  • subtitlesABSTRACT

In the present work, the investigation of the dynamics of three dimensions Mathieu equations containing periodic terms as well as the delayed parameters. Mathieu equations included the influence of damping terms and the coupled system involves both delayed and non-delay terms. The system is proposed as an extension of delayed two coupled Mathieu-type equations to higher dimensions, with emphasis on how resonance between the internal frequencies leads to a loss of stability. The method of multiple scales is used to examine the islands of stability near the resonance cases. The transition curves are analyzed using the method of harmonic balance, and we find we can use this method to easily predict the `resonance curves' from which bands of instability emanate. We note that the delayed higher dimension of the parametric excitation has a great interest and application to the design of nuclear accelerators.

  • subtitlesABSTRACT

A bioremediation model was developed for the bioremediation of a crude oil polluted soil. The developed mathematical model considers a batch process. The model was designed to predict the quantity of crude oil remaining per time in crude oil contaminated areas during in-situ bioremediation. The model can be used to monitor the progress of soil bioremediation by monitoring crude oil residual concentration per time. Comparing the results of the simulations of the derived model to the results of an existing model, shows that the new model is valid and reliable for monitoring the progress of any batch bioremediation process of crude oil polluted soils.

The crystal structure, grain size, optical properties, dielectric properties, thermal properties and magnetic properties are studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet visible near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR), inductance capacitance resistance meter bridge (LCR meter) , thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA)/ differential thermal analysis (DTA)/differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). XRD studies indicate that barium hexaferrite still maintained the hexagonal magneto-plumbite phase after substitution of La-Mg and calcination. DTA studies show that the formation of hexaferrite phase takes place nearly at 8000C. VSM analysis reveals an increase in saturation magnetization, coercivity, retentivity and anisotropy constants with increase in substituent.

In the present work, magnetic nanoparticles of Zn0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4 ferrite were synthesized using citrate precursor method. These nanoparticles were sintered at different temperatures ranging from 3000C to 10000C. Structural studies were carried out with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Single-phase formation of spinel structure with cubic symmetry has been confirmed from the XRD patterns. The particle size and distribution was further checked by transmission electron microscope (TEM).Formation of spinel structure was confirmed from the spectra of FTIR. The investigation shows the increase in particle size with the increase in annealing temperature. The M-H loop at room temperature has been traced using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The absence of magnetic parameters such as remanent magnetization, coercivity, hysteresis of the M-H curve and non zero magnetic moments indicate the existence of superparamagnetism in the magnetic nanoparticles.

In the present work, magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanostructures are fabricated by sol-gel method. Structural studies are carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The XRD patterns of MgFe2O4 show single-phase formation of FCC spinel structure. The average particle size of samples sintered at different temperatures (300-800°C) is controlled in the nano-range i.e. ~ 10 nm. The crystallinity shows increment with increasing sintering temperature. Formation of spinel structure is confirmed using FTIR. The magnetic measurements are made from M-H hysteresis loops traced at room temperature using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). It is found that ferrites in the nanoregime are found to behave as single domain. The low temperature (300°C) sintered ferrite has almost zero coercivity and retentivity which shows superparamagnetic behaviour of the as-prepared ferrite.
