House of cards.
There are many questionable aspects of the cancer journal Oncotarget, its peer review process chief among them. Somehow the journal has managed to get a high impact factor.
The journal’s publisher is a big name dropper, openly exploiting the reputations of the top cancer researchers and Nobel laureates who have a connection to this questionable journal. I think it’s just a matter of time before the journal is exposed for what it really is.

A Tunisia-based publisher has “cloned” itself, creating a new publishing operation with a different name, but with the same low-quality journals.

A torturous read.
Here is another example of an article in an open-access journal about plagiarism that itself contains plagiarism. The 2016 article, classified as a “short communication” in the predatory International Journal of Health Sciences and Research, has only two pages of text and is barely readable, except for the plagiarized parts.

Journal of easy academic credit.
I don’t see too many questionable open-access journals that originate in Japan, but here’s one, the Journal of Physical Therapy Science. It purports to be the organ of The Society of Physical Therapy Science, for which I can find no website, other than the journal’s. Read the rest of this entry »

More fiction than fact.
A Russian-owned journal that claims to be based in Poland is as fake as a scholarly journal can get. The East European Science Journal has a completely made up editorial board, and most other aspects of it are fake also.

The copycat journal’s unprofessional masthead, boasting fake impact factors.
I learned recently of a journal whose title exactly copies the title of a respected journal in the same field, the Journal of Natural Products. The counterfeit journal is based in India, while the original journal is published by a respected scholarly society.
