Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago

The idea of twinning the City of St. Catharines and Port of Spain was born in 1965, when Philip Atteck, a Trinidadian, gave an informative lecture about Trinidad & Tobago during a meeting with the Mayor, city councillors, press & radio representatives, police & fire departments, the Chamber of Commerce, service clubs and local businesses.

Afterwards, when touring our city, Mr. Atteck realized many similarities between St. Catharines & Port of Spain; most notably, the friendliness of the people.

At the same, both cities had a population of about 120,000, both had a university, both were surrounded by agriculture, both had radio stations operating on the same frequency, both had active chapters from the same service clubs and both were port cities.

The official Twinning Ceremony took place on October 4, 1968 in Port of Spain.  On that day, the Mayor of St. Catharines, Mayor Mackenzie A. Chown, and the Mayor of Port-of-Spain, Mayor J. Hamilton Holder, declared the Mundialization of St.Catharines and the Twinning of our two cities.
