Beyond the Playground is about promoting physical literacy and improving the fundamental movement skills of our youth. While children will learn valuable skills, all of the programming is based around fun, interactive activities, inspired by games and sports commonly played on the playground.
All programming will be held in the gymnasium of Harriet Tubman Public School (84 Henry Street, St. Catharines) and registration is open to all children in Niagara.

This program will expose the young athlete to a variety of movements that will put them in touch with their body while developing their motor skills as well as the very basic fundamentals of basketball. Topics of instruction include motor skills, ball handling, shooting form and footwork, defense, passing and rebounding. Participants will be divided into age and skill appropriate groups. Registration fee includes new basketball, t-shirt and water bottle.

This program focuses on movement mechanics, strength and mind & body awareness. Emphasis is on the mastery of fundamental movement skills to improve agility, quickness, body coordination, balance and stability. Each child will be challenged to improve their overall level of cardiovascular health and physical fitness. Mastery of new skills and increased core strength will give your child the confidence needed to succeed in a variety of sports.

Coach John's enthusiasm and energy is contagious and he has now created his own signature series of recreational programs for children. This first series will feature a multi-sport approach to fun, fitness and physical literacy. The format is non-competitive with no score keeping. The focus will be on personal, skill and team development. Each session will feature different sports, activities and games, including flag football, floor hockey, European handball and T-ball. Register early as class size is limited to 10 participants per session. NOTE: This is a 2 hour program.

Futsal is the only FIFA-sanctioned indoor soccer which is played 5 on 5. This new Futsal recreational house league program is for players of all abilities from ages 6 - 12 years. Emphasis is on basic soccer skills, developing reflexes, coordination, ball control, playmaking awareness, fitness training and physical literacy. This program also introduces a healthy competitive environment while striving for encouraged learning and fun. Compared to typical soccer, each player touches the ball up to 210% more often in Futsal. Teams are coached and selected according to skill level. Every player is guaranteed 8 matches plus 2 optional championship matches. Registration fee includes t-shirt and water bottle for every participant.
Open gym is a drop-in recreational basketball program. The players are responsible for making their own pick up teams. Pick up rules can be found posted on the wall in the gymnasium in case players are not familiar with the process. City staff will be onsite in the gym at all times to enforce the fair play rules and to ensure that all participants act in a manner which is safe and fun. Parents are also welcome - make it a family night. No pre-registration required as this is a drop-in program.

The Ontario government has contributed $53,000 from the Ontario Sport and Recreation Community Fund to support Beyond the Playground.
