our impact

Through undertaking and sharing cutting edge research and driving innovation, we create networks and opportunities for people to collaborate and create real world impact.

Our areas of work range from the future of our cities and communities, to education, moving towards a more creative economy and the redesign of public services.

Working with cities and communities

Our flagship RSA City Growth Commission of 2014 is sparking momentum towards a new economic and political settlement for our cities. The Commission’s proposals were referred to by the Prime Minister as 'first class' work; paving the way for the Chancellor's ‘Northern Powerhouse’ commitment and driving real social change.

Influencing government policy

The RSA's Tomorrow's Investor project has helped protect millions of people from poverty in old age by campaigning for vital changes to pension provision in the UK, boosting transparency and increasing protection for savers.

Institutional reform

Our Independent Review of the Police Federation helped them to overcome a series of high-profile and damaging controversies. Setting out the case for reform of their culture, behaviours, and structures, the RSA steered the Federation towards successfully rebuilding trust amongst its members, political stakeholders and the wider public.

City Growth Commission

The RSA City Growth Commission was a major 12 month enquiry into how cities can be empowered to shape and drive their economies. It's conclusions have gone on to shape government policy and the high profile "Northern Powerhouse" agenda.

Pensions

Tomorrow’s Investor helped ensure that pension funds became more transparent over their hidden costs and charges, and convinced the Government to support collective saving with the introduction of new legislation in the Queen’s Speech.

Police Federation Review

The Independent Review into the Police Federation set out an effective case for reform of the organisation. It's recommendations were accepted by the Police Federation, backed by the UK Home Secretary and are currently in the process of being implemented.

The RSA is without doubt one of the most influential and exciting influences on British public policy. The combination of a stellar public events programme, allied with a brilliant research agenda and a constant willingness to engage with pressing policy questions, means that the RSA is playing a pivotal role in shaping policymaking across the political spectrum.

What we do

We  focus our work on three key themes where we believe we can have the greatest impact for the most people.

Public Services & Communities

We enable people to take an active role in solving the problems in their own communities, driving innovation and changing the way that public services are designed, delivered and managed.

Creative Learning & Development

We seek to close the creativity gap, working with learners, educators and leaders to develop new approaches that enable everyone, regardless of background, to generate original, valuable ideas and make them happen.

Economy, enterprise & manufacturing

We bring together businesses, makers and entrepreneurs to understand and promote entrepreneurship, sustainable and innovative manufacturing and to create the next generation of socially responsible designers and enterprises.

The RSA has helped to form a growing consensus across the political parties about the need for fairly fundamental change in the way services are delivered. When the histories are written, the role of the RSA in stimulating and helping to forge that growing consensus will be up there in lights.
