Move over Ellen DeGeneres and that unforgettable Oscar selfie. Leonardo DiCaprio has just been crowned the king of Twitter.
When DiCaprio accepted his Oscar for best actor for his role in “The Revenant” at the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday, some 440,000 tweets a minute flew over that, according to Twitter’s own blog.
That was the most-Tweeted moment of any Oscar telecast ever, said Twitter TWTR, +1.00% . It beat out the previous record of 255,000 tweets a minute when @TheEllenShow tweeted a star-crammed selfie from the Oscars in 2014. That selfie has been retweeted over 3 million times:

As for Leo, a couple of tweets from the Academy furiously made the rounds as #leonardodicaprio and #congratsleo just kept trending:

Even more traffic went to this Twitter account, which finally had its moment of glory:

An exhaustive hoard of Tweeters — some quite emotionally charged — descended to convey their own heartfelt congratulations to the six-time nominated DiCaprio:

DiCaprio used the fresh attention and his speech to focus on climate change, a topic he has spoken about before. It isn’t surprising, then, that it was the topic of his first post-Oscar tweet:
#ClimateChange action starts w/ electing leaders who'll make brave & vital changes needed to save our planet. Visit https://t.co/PWFl863hdq
