Manchester United and Newcastle play out entertaining 3-3 draw at St James' Park.... and Steve McClaren predicted the result

Perhaps Steve McClaren should try his luck at predicting results more often after the Newcastle manager correctly guessed the score of his side's Premier League match with Manchester United

Paul Dummett's last-minute equaliser sealed an entertaining 3-3 draw for Newcastle in their quest to avoid relegation from the top flight this season.

And McClaren must have been pleased with Tuesday's result in more ways than one after the former England manager correctly predicted the score in his pre-match press conference.

Ahead of the St James' Park clash, McClaren said on Monday: 'Manchester United are a dangerous team with very good players and, on their day, they can control the game and hurt you.

'We have to make sure they don't and be positive. We need to be well organised and disciplined like we were at Old Trafford. The odds would probably be on 0-0 – but it will probably be a 3-3!'

Newcastle rescued a point after Wayne Rooney's penalty and Jesse Lingard's finish put Manchester United 2-0 up.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic's penalty levelled the scores before Rooney looked to have won the match for the visitors with a strike in the 79th minute.

But left back Dummett's late strike sealed an important draw for Newcastle and manager McClaren was delighted with the way his players fought for their point.

He said: 'We were talking about "Boring, boring United" and Newcastle having questionable character - I think both teams showed that that's not true. We said it might be a 0-0 and it's ended up a 3-3.

'Manchester United are a quality team and they keep the ball and they control it once they're in front. You don't realise what a monumental effort that is, to come back from 2-0 and 3-2, and to perform as we did.'
