Newcastle thriller shreds the nerves of under-fire bosses Steve McClaren and Louis van Gaal
- Paul Dummett snatched a precious point for struggling Newcastle United
- The full-back drilled home a superb 90th-minute equaliser to earn 3-3 draw
- Wayne Rooney scored twice and set up Jesse Lingard for first-half strike
They are two of the frontrunners in the Premier League sack race and the strain showed on a frenzied night under the lights at St James’ Park.
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren and opposite number Louis van Gaal are feeling the heat right now and, for the latter, the manner in which his Manchester United side squandered their two-goal lead again raises questions of his management.
Indeed, Van Gaal only once vacated the safety of his dugout to shout a brief instruction to his players and, when Wayne Rooney wasted one golden chance with United leading 2-1, he was seen jolting back in his seat in frustration.

At least McClaren ventured from his enclosure and he was soon remonstrating with the fourth official when referee Mike Dean penalised Chancel Mbemba for a handball inside the area in the ninth minute. Rooney converted the spot-kick but Van Gaal, much like a watching reporter, merely noted the score.
McClaren continued to cut the more animated of the managerial adversaries and, as his disjointed side struggled to transport possession from their own half, he could be heard urging his players to regain their calm and composure.
It did not work and, from another errant pass, Rooney broke before teeing up Jesse Lingard for United’s second. Van Gaal scribbled, McClaren scrambled, spinning on his heels and spitting a verbal volley of expletives.

But when Georginio Wijnaldum nicked a response for the hosts three minutes before the break, there was at last a fist-pump and relief-induced grimace from the head coach.
McClaren emerged with a brew for the second half and Newcastle’s performance was much more his cup of tea.
And the former England coach finally broke into his trademark smile when Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled from the penalty spot on 67 minutes.
Rooney restored United’s lead and Paul Dummet smashed a dramatic equaliser in the final minute. Both bosses were probably glad to see the back of this nerve-shredder.
