Jonjo Shelvey completes £12million transfer to Newcastle from Swansea

Newcastle have completed the £12million signing of Swansea and England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Sportsmail revealed in November that the 23-year-old was top of the list of players manager Steve McClaren recommended the club pursue in January.

And Shelvey arrived on Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalise the terms of a five-year deal. The midfielder was then paraded to supporters at St James' Park during Newcastle's match against Manchester United

His former club Liverpool, who Shelvey left in 2013, received around £3.6million as part of a 30 per cent sell on agreement with Swansea.

The capture represents something of a coup for McClaren, who advised that the club make Shelvey and Tottenham winger Andros Townsend their top targets nearly eight weeks ago.

A move for Townsend could yet materialise and Newcastle’s backroom staff had already drawn up a fitness plan for the wideman, who has fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane.

The arrival of Shelvey will make it two signings in a week for United, following the £4.5m addition of Bordeaux midfielder Henri Saivet on Monday.

The Magpies, though, are desperate to move on several players and midfielder Cheick Tiote will complete an £8m switch to Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua in the coming days.

Newcastle will then redouble their efforts to bring in the goalscorer they need to avoid relegation.

A club-record offer in the region of £18m remains on the table for West Brom’s Saido Berahino, although he has his heart set on a move to Spurs.
