Newcastle complete £4.5m signing of Henri Saivet from Bordeaux as midfielder agrees five-year deal at St James' Park  

Newcastle United have completed the  £4.5million signing of midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux.

The 25-year-old, who can also be deployed on the wing, has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St James' Park. 

Saivet graduated from Bordeaux's academy, making his first-team debut in 2007 at the age of 17.

Saivet says that he is looking forward to playing in front of a capacity crowd on Tyneside

He went on to make 178 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 club, scoring 23 goals, and featured in both Europa League group-stage games against Newcastle in the 2012-13 campaign. 

On signing for the Toon, Saivet told nufc.co.uk: 'I am very happy to be here at Newcastle.

'I am really proud to be able to play for this club and I am really excited at the challenge ahead.' 

The Senegal international added: 'St. James' Park is a really impressive and special stadium. In France there is nothing that compares to this, and I can't wait to get out there with my new team-mates and help them climb the table.'

Newcastle are currently embroiled in a relegation battle, sitting 18th in the Premier League table and are desperate to pick up some points soon.

Head coach Steve McClaren is hoping to sign Swansea City's Jonjo Shelvey later this week.
