  • The Swans are expecting a Newcastle a bid for Shelvey in the coming week

Jonjo Shelvey was involved in a shouting match with a supporter after Swansea were dumped out of the FA Cup by League Two Oxford.

On a miserable day for the Welsh club, Shelvey followed the 3-2 defeat by applauding the away end, only to be abused by a Swansea fan.

Shelvey responded by gesturing back at the supporter before leaving the field. Shelvey’s future at the club is very much up in the air at the moment, with a bid expected from Newcastle this week and Swansea unlikely to stand in his way if the offer is in excess of £10million.

This season has marked a major fall from grace for the midfielder, who has broken into the England team but was only returned to the Swansea starting side on Sunday after falling out of favour under Alan Curtis.

Of the incident, Curtis said: ‘I saw him go over to the fans and I thought everything was OK. The suggestion is some of the crowd were having a go at him but I genuinely did not see that.

‘I heard the crowd sing his name a few times during the game so I do not know what the reaction was. I did not see it and have not had a chance to speak to him as he went for a drugs test.’

Shelvey’s performance will again come under scrutiny in a game which Swansea led through Jefferson Montero before Liam Sercombe levelled from the penalty spot and Kemar Roofe scored twice. Bafetimbi Gomis pulled one back but Swansea were well beaten.

Curtis added: ‘His performance was a bit like the team - he started poorly and got better. But we expect more from Jonjo, it is as simple as that. We know the ability he has got, and if he does not play at those standards everyone starts to point fingers. He is disappointed himself but that is something we have to work on.’
