Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has become a regular feature on the League Two sidelines in recent seasons.

But the former midfielder took to the turf once again as a player on Sunday morning as he attempted to show fans he still has what it takes to put in a performance on the pitch.

Ainsworth donned yellow and black as he and his Finchampstead Athletic team-mates took on Fernhill in the cup.

And it was a winning return for 42-year-old Ainsworth as Finchampstead secured progression in the cup with a 2-0 victory on their own patch - thanks in large to his goal.

It's safe to say cup fever has firmly gripped Ainsworth, with his Wycombe side earning a replay at home against Aston Villa in Saturday's early fixture.

Joe Jacobson was the man earning Wycombe a famous replay away at Villa Park as he netted from the spot to cancel out Micah Richards' opener.

Aston Villa supporters were fuming at the full time whistle and Ainsworth has urged them not to boycott the clash as they grow frustrated with their side.

When asked if he would want Villa fans to shelve any protests and turn out in numbers for the replay, Wycombe boss Ainsworth said: 'Yes, do it in the next league game after the replay please, because you'll kill us if you do that!

'Villa are in a tough place at the moment, they've got good players but they just don't seem to be gelling as a team.

'I want to say thank you to the Villa fans for showing us so much respect by clapping us off the pitch. For them to do that when they are in a bit of disarray that was great.

'This game would be worth £144,000 if it screened live on TV, which we hope it will be now of course. And then you could add in a sizeable gate, hopefully.

'Everyone knows about our debt, so this would be huge for the club, and hopefully it will be a packed house up there. But we'll be giving our all again up there, we'll go for it and just see what happens.'
