  • Peter Nevill was dismissed run out after the ball rebounded into stumps
  • Zampa then claimed a wicket, Aaron Ayre LBW, with his next ball
  • Stars went on to beat the Renegades with 12 balls remaining

Australia's Big Bash League lived up to its name in bizarre circumstances as Adam Zampa managed to dismiss Peter Nevill with his nose.

Melbourne Stars leg-spinner Zampa was driven powerfully by Melbourne Renegades batsman Dwayne Bravo, but instead of the ball racing to the mid-on boundary it ricocheted off Nevill's bat.

Watching where he thought the ball was going, Zampa was as shocked as anyone when it smashed him in the nose before incredibly rebounded into the stumps with Nevill out of his ground.

Australia wicketkeeper Nevill was immediately concerned for the bowler and his bloody face but was soon sent back to the Docklands Stadium pavilion.

'I didn't realise,' he said. '[Umpire] Geoff Joshua had to tap me on the shoulder and say, 'by the way mate you're out.' My primary concern was Zamps. As soon as I'd seen what happened and the sound that it made was pretty sickening, my primary concern was how he was doing.'

Despite the unusual circumstances of his dismissal, the scorecard will only remember Nevill being run out by Zampa for seven.

It was a match-turning moment for the Stars in a match they eventually won with 12 balls remaining and eight wickets in hand.

Nevill had faced just 10 balls in his seven after the wickets of Chris Gayle, Tom Hooper and Cameron White fell.

Nevill's wicket left the Renegades 77 for 4 after 12.3 overs.

Zampa, after receiving treatment, then struck straight away removing Aaron Ayre LBW for a golden duck in his first Big Bash appearance.

The Renegades managed just 155 for six before Kevin Pietersen (67 not out) and Peter Handscomb (39) saw the Stars home safety to victory.
