Chris Gayle was outshone by ex-England pair Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright in his first Big Bash League game since provoking a sexism row.

The West Indies batsman was fined £4,800 by his club the Melbourne Renegades after asking Channel 10 reporter Mel McLaughlin out for a drink during a pitchside interview and responding to her obvious discomfort by adding: 'Don't blush, baby.'

Gayle opened the batting after the Renegades were put in by their city rivals the Melbourne Stars at the Docklands Stadium, and hit two sixes in an innings of 21 at a run a ball before holing out to long on.

Compatriot Dwayne Bravo hit an unbeaten 59 from 37 balls, with four fours and three sixes, to lift the Renegades to 155 for six in their 20 overs as Stars opening batsman Marcus Stoinis took three for 11 with his medium pace.

Stoinis and Wright put on a quick 33 for the first wicket before Pietersen joined his former international colleague in the middle.

They put on 29 before Wright hammered a catch to short cover, having made 37 from 26 balls with seven fours.

Pietersen continued to flourish in partnership with Peter Handscomb as the pair's unbroken stand of 94 saw the Stars home with eight wickets and two overs to spare.

Pietersen's half-century came up in 36 balls and he celebrated by hitting the last of his three sixes, adding five fours as he finished 67 not out from 43 balls, with Handscomb on 39.
