Transparent's second season shocked me. It feels like a deep questioning of some of the central tenets of progressive society... This allows Transparent to be more bracing, more challenging, and more compelling than most any other show on TV.
By conceding some of the notable critiques of Season 1 and embracing its exploratory and progressive sensibilities, Transparent is, in my mind, a better show in Season 2.
What is particularly thrilling about "Transparent's" second season is how it serves as a canvas for Soloway's broadest imaginings on a feminist and/or progressive process of filmmaking... while also being incredibly, beautifully well done.
Everything that was a big part of the first season is back, but more: The show's loose fantasy boundaries are even more permeable, the Judaism is more present, everyone's worst trait is more squarely front-and-center.
The Pfeffermans remain a very trying bunch. It takes immense skill on the part of everyone, in front of and behind the cameras, to make them figures you're compelled to watch. This great effort succeeds.
Tambor and Hoffmann are still standouts, but their show is moving in a bleaker direction this season.
