Of course if you are new to the world of Naruto, you should watch the previous seasons before this one. Every episode of Naruto is great and full of great storytelling. The characters are mostly funny and comical, but at times the plot takes a much deeper and emotional route. The beginning of Season 3 (Season 3: Vol. 1) is pure action and no filler. Each episode advances the plot however, at times it moves a little slow. The rest of this season (Season 3: Vol. 2) is filler as well as all of Season 4. In other words, this is the last major story arc in the classic Naruto series. I'm sure if you are a huge Naruto fan like I am though, you will want to collect the entire series including all the filler episodes.
Although Naruto has appeared on kids' channels like Cartoon Network and Disney XD, it is not targeted towards children. These are Uncut episodes that leave the blood and cursing intact. Although its not as gruesome as a slasher horror film, it shouldn't be viewed by young children.
Overall, Naruto is a great anime series with a twisting and surprising plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Every character has a unique story to be told and explored. If you are unsure about Naruto, watch Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block on saturday nights. I guarantee you will be hooked!
*UPDATE*
(Episodes: 108-135)
I mean episode 135 as in 'The Promise That Could Not Be Kept' which is AFTER Naruto and Sasuke fight. Kakashi Sensei comes along, shortly after Sasuke left and picks up Naruto. Naruto is still passed out after the fight, but when he finally wakes up, he hears the news about what happened to everyone else. Meanwhile, Choji, Neji, and Kiba are being treated to the medicare, while Shikamaru only has a broken finger. Tsunade comes out from Choji's room and tells Shikamaru that it was a Mission Failed. Shikamaru promises that he will do everything he can to take care of everyone and make sure the mission is a success next time.

SEASON THREE, VOLUME ONE BOX SET!
Of all the episodes in the original (i.e. - non Shippuden) Naruto series; this Season 3, Vol. 1 set has to be considered among the most powerful of the lot. For if you thought that the Naruto series was good up to this point (and you wouldn't have gotten this far if you hadn't); then you're really going to be in for a treat as the Sasuke/Naruto rivalry comes to a thundering close.
The plot is simple. Obsessed with killing his brother, frustrated at not being able to outdo Naruto; Sasuke lets the darkness that dwells in his heart overtake him as he is lured away from the Leaf Village by Orochimaru's personal bodyguard, the Sound Ninja Four. And it's up to Shikamaru as a newly appointed Chunin Squad Commander to gather together as many of the elite Genin that the Leaf Village has and to get him back before it's too late! And what a chase it becomes!
While there's lot's of action and comedy in a typical Naruto episode; that's not the case with this set. Right from the get go with Naruto and Sasuke literally trying to kill each other; it becomes quite apparent that this is going to be a deadly serious and a very special set of episodes and that's exactly what it becomes. As every one of the Genin (Choji, Neji, Kiba, Shikamaru and Naruto) will have to put everything on the line with no guarantees of success or even survival in order to save Sasuke from the darkness.
There are some incredible moments, some very touching flashbacks and some even more incredible surprises as the boxset comes to a thundering close on disc six with a three episode fight between Naruto and Sasuke at the waterfall of the Final Valley which beats any battle I've ever seen on Dragonball Z! Then sums it all up with a final episode that's basically a very touching epilogue.
An incredibly powerful ending to the original Naruto series and an absolute must have for anybody who has followed the series up to now. Absolutely 5 stars out of 5.

SEASON THREE, VOLUME TWO BOX SET!
After the thundering conclusion of the Season 3, Vol. 1 Set; the animators caught up to the Manga storyline. And here they had to make a decision. Either wait three years to accumulate enough material to continue the series or........ do three years of filler! And that's exactly what they did. So this Season 3, Vol. 2 set and the Season 4, Vol. 1 & 2 following sets are ALL filler! Some are very good filler using various left over bits and pieces from the original Manga, some flashbacks filling in backstories and some well......, just your basic filler.
So this Vol. 2 set starts off ostensibly with a hunt for Sasuke which in reality is simply a set-up for the first major filler arc in which Sakura soon discovers for herself why Naruto keeps calling Master Jiriya a pervy sage! It's pretty funny and stays up to the original Naruto standards only dropping in quality near the end when it turns into a standard Dungeon crawl. Then follows with about three more story arcs interspersed with smaller stand-alone episodes. Most of these are okay but after the high quality of the preceding original episodes; they tend to be more of the same or just typical filler copies that were done better before. The single comedy episodes are pretty decent though.
However there are a couple of exceptions. Firstly near the end of this boxset is a story arc about rescuing a gold mining town that is basically a clone of the "Land of Waves" story arc from the first Naruto boxset. (They even do flashbacks to it!) While creepier and not quite as good; it definitely has it's moments!
But more importantly there is one story arc that definitely does stand up to the original Naruto in terms of quality and storyline. It's the hunt for the Bikochu Beetle! While the ending is a bit dumb, It has a great cast of villains, a storyline that makes sense and more importantly, it centers on Hinata and her growing abilities and importance to the overall Naruto narrative. In my opinion, it's the main reason to acquire this volume 2 boxset. Everything else you can pretty much take it or leave it.
So 4 stars out of 5 for the Bikochu story arc. 3 stars out of 5 for everything else!
