    Closing date: 10th September 2015

The City & Guilds of London Art School is seeking applications for a 1 to 2 year Woodwork Artist’s Fellowship. The successful applicant will have a recent undergraduate/postgraduate qualification in Fine Art/ Sculpture, and demonstrate a commitment to 3D contemporary art practice that utilises wood or woodworking-based practices. The Wood Workshop is a dynamic learning space where students, from across the Art School’s courses, are introduced to and taught the processes involved in making and constructing with wood. The post offers a unique opportunity for an artist to develop their own practice in the context of the Art School’s Wood Workshop, working alongside artist and Technician David MacDiarmid.

The Fellowship recipient’s responsibilities will include:
    • Being available in the Wood Workshop on average 1 day per week during term time
    • Participating in the support and supervision of students under the direction of the Workshop technician
    • Working within the Health and Safety protocols and guidelines of the Art School in general and the Wood Workshop in particular.
In return the successful applicant will receive:
    • Access to the Wood Workshop throughout the week to pursue their own practice
    • Training and experience in advanced technical aspects of woodwork, benefitting the applicant’s artistic practice and technical abilities
    • Experience of student supervision within a small scale supportive Art School environment
    • Knowledge and experience of safe working practices
    • An exhibition space and promotion as part of the MA and Artists’ in Residence exhibition at the Art School in September 2016

The City & Guilds of London Art School is a ‘not for profit’ charitable institution, providing a valuable alternative to other models of Art education in the UK at Postgraduate, Undergraduate and Foundation levels. The Art School has a mission to foster excellence in contemporary Fine Art, Historic Carving and Conservation of cultural objects. It does this in part by providing students with a very high level of contact time with artist tutors and experts. It also has many partnerships and links with London’s major museums and galleries and is supported by a number of benefactors and philanthropic organisations, providing bursaries and funding for our students and facilities.
The Art School has a particular focus on skills-based teaching and a commitment to cultivate knowledge and curiosity in both the historical and contemporary contexts of our subjects. The relationships between tradition and innovation provide a rich area of discussion and debate and we are seeking a woodwork fellow who can actively and positively engage in the Art School’s community of artists, conservators and craft makers.
