THE UNKNOWN THROWER (from the Macon Telegraph, Macon, GA, USA, May 14, 2006) Ten years ago, Reese Hoffa, then a junior at Lakeside-Evans, qualified for the state meet in the shot put. He had barely advanced from his region and wasn't expected to be a threat at state. He ended up having the best performance of any classification with a throw of 58 feet, 8 inches. Hoffa, the current world indoor shot put champion, returned Saturday as the honorary meet director. Hoffa won two state shot put titles before earning All-American honors four years in a row at the University of Georgia. He also was third in the NCAA Outdoor Championship and runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2001. His nickname, the "Unknown Shot Putter," still follows him to this day.
