Diff the Dragon – Part Twenty Five

Diff-25

Diff the Dragon by Angela Lott, illustrations by Richard Bartrop. An Okal Rel Universe Legacy Novella featuring the young Alivda

Angela Lott is the middle child of Lynda’s three daughters. She did two years of Business schooling at the College of New Caledonia and is now working as a receptionist at her local FYiDoctors. In her spare time she enjoys writing, video blogging, reading and watching very nerdy TV shows.

Part 25

Amel turned back to Alivda. “Diff,” he said, “I think Ann would like it if next time I didn’t bring you with me.”

Ann would have liked it if you had never brought her in the first place, Ann thought bitterly.

“No,” Alivda said.

“You can’t spend every moment with me, Diff,” Amel said.

“Yes, I can!” Diff announced.

“What about when I go back to Gelion?” Amel asked.

“You always come back,” Alivda said. “And you have stuff to do there, but when you are travelling you take me.”

“Yes, I do,” Amel said. “And I love to, but sometimes I think other people want my attention too.”

“No,” Alivda said again.

Amel smiled. “I am sorry, but yes.”

“NO!” Alivda cried.

Ann was by the door now; Amel near the bed and Alivda in the middle. At this point Alivda turned away from Amel, toward Ann.

Alivda’s battle cry vibrated the walls as Ann’s eyes widened in surprise, seeing the blonde four-year-old charging towards her.

“No!” Amel cried, but Alivda ignored him.

Ann didn’t have time to do anything other than stare. Alivda was fast. Vrellish fast.

The next thing anyone knew Alivda was on top of Ann. She had knocked Ann to the ground and was hitting her as hard as she could.

Amel ran over to try and pry Alivda off, but Alivda didn’t like this idea and pushed Ann out the door away from Amel.

The hall was full of people and they all stared. None of them had seen a child beat up an adult like that before. And to top it all off the adult had brown skin.

Horth squeezed her hand, touched her forehead where beads of sweat were erupting along her hairline, and shook his head.

Flying spike to a larger group of nobleborns meant improvising strategy instead of acting as hand-leader. "Kid, I don't care what you scored in some lab back on Rire. I've earned my laurels where it really counts. Out there." Ann gestured at random with a thumb. Any direction on a space station was 'out'. "And as for the 'who's better than who' crap, let me ask you this. At what? You won't find many Sevolites running the Reetion mail. they don't share our values. And if you've got to discount everything that can't be measured straight up, how about Amel? He's one of the best they've got, but even he can be outclassed."

In September 2013, David K. Juniper created this dynamic logo for Reality Skimming press swag and promo. Lynda had asked for something that represented heroic, optimistic, saga-big story telling.

Here's how David K. Juniper explained the concept.

"We wanted to create something heroic and daring that encompassed major elements from the Okal Rel saga. So, we went with a rapier pointing upwards towards the sky with a rel ship skimming around the blade ( we are seeing some serious skim'facs here)." - David K. Juniper
