Venezuelan Political Prisoners are winners of NED’s 2015 Democracy Award

On Thursday, May 14, 2015, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) will recognize and honor the brave struggle of Venezuela’s political prisoners with its 2015 Democracy Award. Prominent Venezuelan political prisoners Leopoldo López and Antonio Ledezma will be honored along with Tamara Sujú, a Venezuelan lawyer and human rights defender currently living in exile in the Czech Republic. Ledezma’s Award will be accepted on his behalf by his wife Mitzy Capriles. Lopez’s award will be accepted by his wife, Lilian Tintori. Both women are tireless campaigners for their husbands’ release and for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela. :: MORE

On September 21, 2014, after months of gridlock following a hotly contested election, Afghan presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah signed a power-sharing deal to form a National Unity Government. As part of the arrangement, Ghani became Afghanistan’s president while Abdullah assumed the newly created position of chief executive officer, who heads the cabinet. :: MORE
