2015 represents a fantastic milestone – two decades of Formula One in Melbourne. As a partner of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Petaluma is pleased to celebrate this milestone with a Commemorative Edition Petaluma Coonawarra magnum from the 1996 vintage – the year it all began.
Petaluma Coonawarra is our flagship wine and we are proud that it has been Langton’s Classified since 1988 when the classification was first announced.
Just as I am sure you recall the past two decades of Formula One in Melbourne, I recall the nuances of each vintage. The 1996 vintage in Coonawarra was as usual deeply influenced by the very cold waters of the nearby Southern Ocean. The growing season was very cool, but also dry and sunny and the fruit was picked a little later than what is normal.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (about 30%) and Shiraz (about 4%), the wines spent eighteen months in new French oak barriques from Nevers and Alliers.
The 1996 Coonawarra was an aromatic bright, elegant Cabernet dominant wine in its youth, and has aged very gracefully. Lovely soft finely grained tannins have complexed over the seventeen years in bottle and the wine still has rich ripe mulberries and blackcurrant characters. Soft savoury cedar finishes the palate beautifully. A truly elegant, mature dry red. It will live for many more years in magnum.
Each magnum will be individually numbered, commemoratively labelled and gift boxed with one hundred available for purchase at $400 per magnum.
