This seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom home sits on the tip of Castlecrag peninsula and overlooks Sydney’s Middle Harbour, a coastal inlet north of the city’s business center. Owners Paul Salteri, a director of several companies, and his wife Sandra purchased it in 1985 for nearly 3 million Australian dollars (US$2.3 million at the current exchange rate). They sold off about a half-acre of the original plot of land in the late ’80s.

The 9,170-square-foot home (which includes the guesthouse) was built in 1953 and sits on more than 1½ acres. The rooms were last renovated about 20 years ago by Australian interior designer Marion Hall Best. The changes included adding an extra bedroom, a sitting room, custom cabinetry, under-floor heating, an integrated sound system throughout the home, and a hallway with curved glass exterior walls to create a piano room. ‘And also entertaining areas opening onto an added tennis court and a billiard room with a bar,’ Mr. Salteri says. They kept the original glass walls and windows in the other main areas.

The home has panoramic views of Middle Harbour and Sailor’s Bay from every room. Mr. Salteri says one of his favorite spots to enjoy peace and quiet is on the patio where he can ‘overlook the water and watch the boats go by.’ The property is in the lower North Shore suburb of Castlecrag, which is approximately 7 miles from Sydney’s town center.

The master bedroom, shown here, is on the top level facing the harbor. Part of the renovations included putting in a glass outside wall in the en suite. ‘We were a bit daring there,’ Mr. Salteri says. ‘You can have your shower or sit in the bath or on the toilet with water views looking over the southern part of the vista from the house.’ They also put in outside roll-down shutters for privacy.

Within the landscaped gardens there are numerous outdoor entertainment areas, such as courtyards and terraces replete with ponds and sandstone daybeds. The couple are selling the property because they are empty nesters and would like to downsize.

The home has a 2,264-square-foot three-level guesthouse, which overlooks the pool, both shown here. It includes two bedrooms with walk-in closets, 2½ bathrooms and a kitchen. Mr. Salteri thinks the property would suit executives with a ‘reasonable sized family’ or potential overseas buyers.
