  • "Raw Data" Is an Oxymoron

    Publisher: MIT Press

    by Gitelman, L.

We live in the era of Big Data, with storage and transmission capacity measured not just in terabytes but in petabytes (where peta- denotes a quadrillion, or a thousand trillion). Data collection is constant and even insidious, with every click and every "like" stored somewhere for something. This book reminds us that data is anything but "raw," that we shouldn't think of data as a natural resource but as a cultural one that needs to be generated, protected, and interpreted. The book's e... View full Abstract »

  • 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10

    Publisher: MIT Press

    by Montfort, N.; Baudoin, P.; Bell, J.; Bogost, I.; Douglass, J.; Marino, M.; Mateas, M.; Reas, C.; Sample, M.; Vawter, N.

This book takes a single line of code--the extremely concise BASIC program for the Commodore 64 inscribed in the title--and uses it as a lens through which to consider the phenomenon of creative computing and the way computer programs exist in culture. The authors of this collaboratively written book treat code not as merely functional but as a text--in the case of 10 PRINT, a text that appeared in many different printed sources--that yields a story about its making, its purpose, its assumptions... It is arguably one of the most significant enhancements in Ethernet's history. 802.1aq Shortest Path Bridging De... View full Abstract »

  • A medical device is an apparatus that uses engineering and scientific principles to interface to physiology and diagnose or treat a disease. In this Lecture, we specifically consider thosemedical devices that are computer based, and are therefore referred to as medical instruments. Further, the medical instruments we discuss are those that incorporate system theory into their designs. We divide these types of instruments into those that provide continuous observation and those that provide a sin... View full Abstract »

  • A Case for Climate Engineering

    Publisher: MIT Press

    by Keith, D.

Climate engineering -- which could slow the pace of global warming by injecting reflective particles into the upper atmosphere -- has emerged in recent years as an extremely controversial technology. And for good reason: it carries unknown risks and it may undermine commitments to conserving energy. Some critics also view it as an immoral human breach of the natural world. The latter objection, David Keith argues in A Scientist's Case for Climate Engineering, is groundless; we have been usin... View full Abstract »

  • A Century of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, 1882-1982

    Publisher: MIT Press

    by Wildes, K.; Lindgren, N.

Electrical engineering is a protean profession. Today the field embraces many disciplines that seem far removed from its roots in the telegraph, telephone, electric lamps, motors, and generators. To a remarkable extent, this chronicle of change and growth at a single institution is a capsule history of the discipline and profession of electrical engineering as it developed worldwide. Even when MIT was not leading the way, the department was usually quick to adapt to changing needs, goals, curric... View full Abstract »

  • A Concise Introduction to Models and Methods for Automated Planning

    Publisher: Morgan & Claypool

    by Geffner, H.; Bonet, B.

Planning is the model-based approach to autonomous behavior where the agent behavior is derived automatically from a model of the actions, sensors, and goals. The main challenges in planning are computational as all models, whether featuring uncertainty and feedback or not, are intractable in the worst case when represented in compact form. In this book, we look at a variety of models used in AI planning, and at the methods that have been developed for solving them. The goal is to provide a mode... View full Abstract »

  • A First Course in Turbulence

    Publisher: MIT Press

    by Tennekes, H.; Lumley, J.

The subject of turbulence, the most forbidding in fluid dynamics, has usually proved treacherous to the beginner, caught in the whirls and eddies of its nonlinearities and statistical imponderables. This is the first book specifically designed to offer the student a smooth transitionary course between elementary fluid dynamics (which gives only last-minute attention to turbulence) and the professional literature on turbulent flow, where an advanced viewpoint is assumed. Moreover, the text has bee... To shed more light on this complex topic, we conducted a systematic review of 22 existing multi-level interface studi... View full Abstract »

  • A Gyrovector Space Approach to Hyperbolic Geometry

    Publisher: Morgan & Claypool

    by Ungar, A.

The mere mention of hyperbolic geometry is enough to strike fear in the heart of the undergraduate mathematics and physics student. Some regard themselves as excluded from the profound insights of hyperbolic geometry so that this enormous portion of human achievement is a closed door to them. The mission of this book is to open that door by making the hyperbolic geometry of Bolyai and Lobachevsky, as well as the special relativity theory of Einstein that it regulates, accessible to a wider audie...
