100 Best Nintendo Games - Part 6

The top ten revealed!

It's created many discussions so far but we expect things to get even more heated as we reveal our top ten Nintendo games of all time. Take a look and let us know what you think of our top ten by commenting below.

10. Super Street Fighter II

Format: SNES. Released: 1994

Proof that the beat 'em up is one genre that hasn't necessarily benefited from advances in technology, Super Street Fighter II is still the best fighting game of all time some 15 years after its original release. Unbelievably this was the fourth Street Fighter II game but it improved upon previous versions with more characters and better visuals. Pitch perfect fighting action.

Super Mario World
Super Mario World
9. Resident Evil 4

Format: Wii. Released: 2007

Despite the brilliance of the Resident Evil remake, people were growing tired of the Resident Evil formula by 2005. So Capcom reinvented survival horror by bringing back Resident Evil 2's all-action hero Leon. This time he was fighting against waves of mutants and all the Resi trademarks (dull door opening cut scenes, odd camera angles) were stripped out in favour of fast-paced shooting action. The Wii version improved upon the original with Remote aiming.

8. Zelda: A Link To The Past

Format: SNES. Released: 1992

It's rare that a prequel should be better than the original but Link To The Past turned Link into Nintendo's second superstar. This is a great adventure and seeing as it introduced multi-level dungeons, heart containers, the hookshot, the master sword and parallel worlds, it's importance in the Zelda legacy can't be overlooked. Yet even if you ignore all that, Link's journey to rescue Princess Zelda from the dungeon of Hyrule Castle is still gripping now.

7. Super Mario World

Format: SNES. Released: 1992

This SNES launch game took the classic Super Mario Bros. template, added more colour, 3D(ish) backgrounds, new moves and introduced us to Yoshi, Mario's dinosaur buddy who could always be relied on for a lift. Perhaps most importantly it was the first Nintendo game to reward gamers for 100% completion. There are 72 levels in the game but many of them also featured hidden secret exits and finding all 96 will take you an age. Newcomers who found NSMB a bit too short should check this out immediately.

After Super Mario World, Yoshi would go on to star in his own game with Baby Mario as his rider (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) but we'd have to wait another four years for Mario to play the starring role again and, as we all know, it was well worth the wait.

Tetris
Tetris
6. Super Mario 64

Format: N64. Released: 1996

While Super Mario Bros. is platforming perfection and introduced us to the wonderful world of the Mushroom Kingdom, Super Mario 64 is credited with kickstarting 3D gaming. Housing the adventure in Peach's castle was a stroke of genius as you got to know the different levels in the game so well that they felt as familiar as your own home. It's so good it took more than ten years for Nintendo to top it...

5. Tetris

Format: Game Boy. Released: 1989

It hasn't got a plot, any main characters or particularly impressive graphics.

But Tetris has got everything if we're talking about simplistic, genius puzzling with a near-infinite appeal.

Mario Kart Wii and Mario Galaxy? LOL, way to advertise the games.

  2. City Of Delusion Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 16:44

Que angry posts demanding an explaination as to why Mario Kart Wii came 4th.

  3. DBZFan355 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 16:47

    MARIO GALAXY FTW!

  4. ILoveWii Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 16:52

Right, I fail to see why MKWii is in 4th. It's a good game but not the best.

You said it gets 4th because of how much it is played in your office. I thought this was the Top Nintendo Games Ever. If it was ONM's, then said ONM's best Nintendo Games.

  5. SonicFanGirlNo1 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 16:54

Maro Kart Wii is good but it dosen't deserve to be 4th best Nintendo game... :?

  6. Jedi Metroid Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:00

Right, I fail to see why MKWii is in 4th. It's a good game but not the best.

Well it's always in someones opinion. Anyway, they said about them playing it in the office as an example of why it's so good.

  7. eevans Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:01

i fail to see why mariokart wii is 4th i understand that it is one of the best online games on the wii but it doesnt have the amazing moving effect that many other games have.

but that being said i agree with the top two.

orcarina of time is one of the alltime greatest games in general and is so moving and has some of the best gameplay ever.

Super Mario Bros is just superb and is living proof that graphics do not make a great game.

  8. clarkie123 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:06

I don't understand. You rate both Mario Galaxy and LoZ:Twilight Princess as 97%, yet Mario comes 3rd, and Zelda doesn't even get into the top ten? I'm not saying that in my opinion Twilight princess should be in the top 10 of the top 100 greatest Nintendo games (I've certainly not played anywhere near enough - the Wii is my first Nintendo home console), but surely if they got the same percentage they should be pretty near each other?

  9. Xexix Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:06

Why do people like SMB so much? It's boring and infuriating! OOT deserves first, and MKWii deserves somewhere in the 50s or 60s, not the top 10.

  10. ILoveWii Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:14

Whatever, I'm sure you don't agree.

  11. chino40k Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:18

Super Street Fighter 2 better than Turbo?

    I don't know. Really don't know.

  12. Nitendofreak Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:28

lol MKwii and galaxy in top ten

  13. The Timesplitter Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:29

I absolutely RAPE at MKWii but still no top 10 cookie for it.

    Brawl on the other hand...

  14. funmaker11 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:35

Why lol in Mario Galaxy? :?

BTW, Tetris is well high, :o might be because of nostalgia factor. :D

  15. angryidol Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:41

How can mario kart wii be better than mario 64?

mario 64 was the most revolutionary game of its generation and mario kart wii is a poor conversion of a samey and dull game series

or are they just plugging it so more people will buy it?

  17. scottster Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:44

Good choices, apart from Mario Kart Wii-that was the only game I would disagree on.

  18. PiratePete101 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:54

Mario Kart Wii was OK. Great online, but the frame rate issues (30 fps in 3 players +?!? Every other MK could handle the same frame rate!) and dumbing down the difficulty. That and the ruined battle mode (teams only?) equals me and my friends playing Double Dash on the Wii.

Yeah, there was sort of Mario fanboy-isms afoot in the list (Chris?!?) but mostly good. Apart from SMB 3. I'm not dissing Mario, but honestly guys. LoZ:TP deserves Mario Kart Wii's spot.

  19. toffeeman30 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 17:56

good work guys. one of my best features to date.

  20. Icarus_Kid Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:07

Mario Kart 64 is better then Mario Kart Wii :?

  21. Lagerboy Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:07

2 things that I dont agree with this top 10.
1: Mario Kart Wii is good but does not deserve to be higher than mario kart 64. Yes its online but the AI can be really harsh on Mirror mode when you try to get star rankings and there are other little niggles that i cant quite say but they are there. It just simply isnt good enough for 4th maybe 40-50
2: Swap Ocarina of time and Super Mario Bros. They are both amazing games but I think OOT has more longevity than Super Mario Bros beacause SMB is just really played for the high scores, but people like me still play OOT for the storyline.
Also I fully agree with the Tetris and Link To The Past placements, just i think Twilight Princess, and the metroid Prime games should be ever so slightly higher.

  22. Dekudan Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:11

I actually really dislike MKwii, So it should be waaaay down the list

  23. sciqueen Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:19

Super Mario Kart should take Mario Kart Wii's place. And even though Super Mario Bros. is amazing, Super Mario World is better!

  24. DBZFan355 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:25

lol MKwii and galaxy in top ten

    lol you suck

  25. DBZFan355 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:46

I actually really dislike MKwii, So it should be waaaay down the list

Chris: OMG!, this guy doesn't like Mario Kart Wii!
Neil: We all know what that means! Back to number 100 for you!

  26. Doctor Who Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 18:57

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing and this proves it. I'm sorry but in this day and age, Super Mario Bros does not deserve to be 1st. It's incredibly basic and while it might have been revolutionary at the time but a lot of games which ended up outside the top ten, hell the top fifty are a lot better than Super Mario Bros. It was incredibly at the time but it hasn't aged well.

And lol at Mario Kart Wii, those games just went downhill after Double Dash

  27. jinzo64 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 19:14

i thought id put up my top 10 from 1-10 working top to bottom

1.the legend of legend of zelda ocarina of time
best zelda game ever this is the game that got me in to the series in the first place as it was the first one id properly played and to day i still think the graphics are awesome the story lines really cool and all the bosses are brilliant especially ganon at the end of the game. great music great game i'll give 98% because only zeus can be perfect.

    2. the legend of zelda the twilight princess.
simpley because it is so much like ocarina of time with the musical score and the amazing scenery and the return of the fishing. the great land scape of hyrule is brilliant the sunsets the water. just the vast scale of the game it is really impressive on the wii or gamecube both versions are brilliant.

    3. the legend of zelda majoras mask
i couldn't quite decide between this being here or wind waker so i went with this one as it's a squeal to ocarina of time but it is a realy good game in it's own right the traveling back and fourth in time trying to find all the fairies and collecting all the masks is a lot of fun. then finishing the game and defeating the temple bosses using feirce deity mask is always fun.

    4. the legend of zelda the wind waker
i like this just because it so different to the other 3 sailing across the ocean is fun fighting monsters on the ocean. fighting the old guy on your home is always good for practice. i love the graphics but i'm glad they plugged for realistic in twilight princess it just wouldn't have worked.

    5.omg it's not a zelda game it's
    chrono trigger
i know this is port of a snes game that never made to the u.k but so far im really enjoying this ds game it's really cool that i can play on the move im using classic control set and the wait system looks a lot the ff games. i wouldn't mind seeing this on the virtual console so i can play it on a bigger screen.
i was going to put phantom hour glass here but decided that i like this game more.

    6.super mario 64
the best 3d mario game the nice square are always fun to run around and seem to bigger than actually are i still like surfing on lava using a koopa trooper shell thats all ways fun. or using the metal to walk on the bottom of the sea the graphics are still great even by to days standard in my opinion this is the best mario adventure game.

    7 super mario galaxy.
this game reinvented mario and brought great new ideas to the mario universe. it may not have the charm of mario 64 but all the levels are well designed and have there own distinct charm and character the graphics may not be as good as brawl but there still really sweet.

    8. super samsh bros melee
i know brawls got more characters and an online mode but this has mewtwo and mario was awsome unlike his brawl counterpart who thinks hes a squirtle. it was also faster and the fights seemed more fluent. i have everything apart from one trophy. this game is best smash bros game to date so when do we get a portabel version on the ds.

    9. mario kart 64
it was close but i prefer mario kart 64 over double dash and wii as the level design is better and is slightly harder than the newer versions it also seems to a better sense of speed.also the blue weren't ott.

    10.tales of symphonia
it is great game i haven't completed it yet but it was this or the thousand year door for 10th place and i think this game is a lot better than the thousand year door. i know there very different but there both rpgs at the end of the day i just like the battle system and story line better and i think some of the cut sceans are really cool especially the animated ones.

  28. Dan663 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 19:24

I would have not put mario kart wii much further down on the list and mario galexy in the 20's and mario bros 3 higher but thats just me. great list none the less

  29. FriarLawrenceIII Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:20

I disagree with your placement of Super mario bros. Sure, without it, nintendo ,might not be here today, but Held up against todays standards, the game just doesn't cut it. How can a 20 year old, basic, 2D sidescroller possibly compare to the likes of Zelda Ocarina of time? It's gameplay feels very dated. The time of the sidescroller has very much passed.

  30. SuperMarioFan886 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:30

Super Mario 64 deserves to be in the top 5. The game is magical. There's a huge amount of freedom, great music, fun levels and super graphics. The amount of detail and work that has gone into this game is overwhelming.

  31. Mama Luigi Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:35

Mario Kart Wii wasn't great to be honest. The rubber banding ruined the gameplay experience.

  32. Nuttycam Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:43

    Mario Kart Wii.....

  33. GuyWhoLikesBlue2 Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:47

I think Mario Galaxy deserves a sequel...

  34. saucysalmon Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 20:58

I can't believe that there was no place in the countdown for two of THE great N64 platformers, namely Banjo Tooie and Donkey Kong 64. Not only were these games truly superb, they received two of the three highest ratings given to an n64 game by this magazine!

  35. Colonel-Austin Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 21:33

I find this far too opinionated by the staff and not enough realism. I mean, Battalion Wars II is not on the list. It has pointer controls, cutscenes, plot twists, online, horribly loveable voice acting, and is a genre all on it's own.

And Tetris has blocks falling and being positioned into lines. "Oh but it was soo addictive." Much like several Class A drugs, NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Plus Tetris wasn't Nintendo's - whereas BW is.

  36. FightThePower Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 21:40

To be honest, I completely disagree with most of this list. Super Metroid, one of (if not, the) the best 2D games ever made, comes in behind Wii Sports. Sorry, no dice.

Metroid Prime should be higher than 18th as well.

Mario Kart Wii wasn't great to be honest. The rubber banding ruined the gameplay experience.

    QFT.

The item system in Lego Racers, an old MK rip-off from the 90s, is better than the one in MKWii.

  37. Jedi Metroid Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 22:33

Right, I fail to see why MKWii is in 4th. It's a good game but not the best.

You said it gets 4th because of how much it is played in your office. I thought this was the Top Nintendo Games Ever. If it was ONM's, then said ONM's best Nintendo Games.

Well it's always in someones opinion. Anyway, they said about them playing it in the office as an example of why it's so good.

Whatever, I'm sure you don't agree.

On the contrary, I agree completely. I rank Mario Kart Wii among my most favourite games ever.

  38. AbbaCraka Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 22:39

Wow, I honestly can't figure this out, is this shameless plugging of recent Wii games to push the sales a little more, with a couple of classics thrown in at the top to appease the people that completely disagree with Mario Kart being in the top 10 let alone the top 50, namely anyone who has played a previous Super Mario and Mario Kart game. I think I enjoyed the GC, GBA, DS and 64 version of Mario Kart more than I did with the Wii version.

I agree with the majority of posters in here that Mario Kart shouldnt be there, 64 is better than Galaxy, OOT deserves top spot, I also find Super Mario World a lot better than Super Mario Bros, even if Bros was the original game that started it all, it doesn't make it better than improvements on it.

This could be an honest opinion from the ONM Staff or whoever wrote this list, though I think it's strange how much it differs from the general opinion.

On the contrary, I agree completely. I rank Mario Kart Wii among my most favourite games ever.

So have you played any of the other Mario Kart games?

Well it's always in someones opinion. Anyway, they said about them playing it in the office as an example of why it's so good.

I disagree, this is a bad attempt at defending an opinion that is being attacked. They did not use playing it in the office as an example, it says

This version of Mario Kart ranks so highly simply due to the sheer number of hours that the ONM team has plunged into it since its release in April last year

the words "simply due" indicate that the ONM staff playing it is the sole reason why it is there.

  39. Not Mr.Davis Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 22:51

I would agree with you ONM but if you genuinely think MKWII is so great then why isn't it rated appropiately?

    Sort it out ONM.

  40. lemonlips Monday 2nd Mar 2009 at 23:18

I think it's important not to mix up great games with influential games. OOT is the best game ever made, much better than Mario bros.

Also, age doesn't constitute greatness. Saying that, I do still think the original pokemon games are the best in the series, if only because they're the only ones where 'catching 'em all' actually seems like a reasonable objective.

  41. Bretteh Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 00:14

Right, I fail to see why MKWii is in 4th. It's a good game but not the best.

You said it gets 4th because of how much it is played in your office. I thought this was the Top Nintendo Games Ever. If it was ONM's, then said ONM's best Nintendo Games.

It's an article being written by ONM.
I fail to see what perspective of you were expecting to see the writing from.
It was always going to be the top Nintendo games from the opinion of ONM.... always. From the very second they thought of the article it was blaringly obvious that it WOULD be ONM'S Nintendo 100.
Also MK Wii is an improvement. Not as good as DS imo but it's better than the original and 64 (which has not aged well). If the opinion is it should be in the top 100 then it's the opinion.
A lot of my top 10 would feature games that have been released in the last 10 years because I genuinely feel them to be the best IN MY OPINION.

  42. UltimoLittleMac Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 05:43

"we defy anyone that has experienced this N64 masterpiece not to place this in at least the top three. It seems that whatever your taste in gaming, absolutely no-one has a bad word to say about this Zelda epic. "

    Okay I will.

It hasn't aged well at all...It's slow, clunky and almost broken. And quite frankly, it wasn't ever that revolutionary. Mario 64 and A Link to the Past best it to the punch at everything it did.

Glad SMB was one, and that Galaxy and Tetris were in the top 5. Makes up for overrated of time being so high.

  43. Turkey Toad Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 07:51

Mario Kart Wii? Ocarina of Time? Super Mario Bros?!

    Wow. Yeah.

I can't believe those games are all higher than Metroid Prime. Criminal, it is.

  44. AbbaCraka Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 08:04

Hmm, was it not the first Zelda game in 3D? Mario 64 was still a platformer where as OOT was Action Adventure, If you ask me the magic in OOT was much better than that of any other Zelda game, even if the minor problems of blocky arms, though I disagree with your other points, are fixed, a game doesnt need to be revolutionary to be good, look at Mario Kart Wii for instance

  45. fergiepunk Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 09:11

zelda did not come first in a games poll?

The internets going to explode! Run while you still can people!

  46. jinzo64 Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 10:51

i know the best zelda game ever lost to an out dated mario game it's awful.

  47. UltimoLittleMac Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 10:51

"Hmm, was it not the first Zelda game in 3D? No, a game doesn't have to be revolutionary to be great, but people make Ocarina sound like it was the be-all end-all revolution, but as I said, Mario 64 laid the foundation for 3D, and LttP laid the foundation for perfection in an action/adventure title. Ocarina just did Z-targeting.

And while I too roll my eyes at seeing Mario Kart Wii being so high (not that it was bad), at the same time, if they like it because they thought it was fun, isn't that what gaming is all about?

And if you think that's bad, you should see an IGN readers' poll...or worse...gamefaqs.

"zelda did not come first in a games poll?

The internets going to explode! Run while you still can people!"

I hope you are being sarcastic towards Zelda fanboys, because then it's funny.

Anyway, I'm just glad one of the right games won, and two others are in the top 5.

  48. Bretteh Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 12:56

I never liked 64. I found it clunky and fairly dull regardless of whether it was revolutionary or not.
Same with Ocarina, much preferred Majoras Mask and Link to the Past.
The only 3D Mario game I actually like is Mario Galaxy, but hey that's me.
Also I still find Super Mario Bros great to play, although I find World better. I am more likely to go back to that or World than I am any of the 3D outings.

  49. Redfish20 Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 17:17

whats everyone got against mkwii? it easily deserved 4th place.

super mario bros didnt deserve to win. it may have been the basis for gaming as we know it but it has been built upon and surpassed. i mean mario bros 3 for example is an excellent game that has more varied gameplay than the original with level design that equals if not betters the original. plus the graphics are a bit better.
then mario got better with the leap to 3D (leap :P ,you know cos it's a platformer...) and then got even better with better levels in galaxy.

p.s. oot is the greatest game ever.

  50. wariorulez Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 17:46

Well this has certainly caused debate!

I have to say SMB was the best game of its time, but has now clearly been beaten.

    My top 10 would be:-
Zelda: OOT (the best zelda game)
Mario Galaxy (the best mario game)
Super Metroid (the best metroid game)
Super Mario World (the best 2D mario game)
    SSBB (the best brawler)
    SSFII (the best fighter)
Lylat Wars (the best pilot/shooter game)
Metroid Prime 1/3 (the best 3D metroid games)
Mario Kart Wii/DS (the best racing games)
Wario Land 2 (the best specifically-portable game)

  51. FightThePower Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 18:12

    whats everyone got against mkwii?

It has crippling balance issues, dodgy AI, a laggy and oversimplistic online interface and a boring battle mode. That's why.

  52. SALTYB0B Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 18:35

mario kart wii at number 4?!?!? :?

  53. goblix Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 19:57

    I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

    Can i just say something?

Mario Kart 64 is officially better than Mario kart Wii.
I dont care where Mario Kart wii is on the list, but as long as kart 64 is ahead of it, im fine.

But it isn't... so im not happy. So is Miyamoto lol, he excepted better of the official magazine!!!! :x

P.S. i will still happily defend my view of pokemon red/blue being in top 10

  54. famicomuter Tuesday 3rd Mar 2009 at 20:02

good list with great titles put in all the wrong places. here is my top ten starting from 1:

    A Link to the Past
    OOT
    SM64
    RE4
    FF6
    SFII
    SMB3
    Mprime
    SMgalaxy
    SMB

and like everyone before me said: MKwii has no place in any top ten. It's fun but its not brilliant and certainly not the best in the series.

    MR GAME & WATCH...

Anyway, i believe Pokemon deserves better for being the best portable game ever. Zelda comes in close behind it.

Also, I found mario 64 more addictive than Galaxy. Another problem i have with Galaxy is that I couldn't help thinking 'OMG that part of the game could have simply been improved by a beta tests' whilst playing Galaxy. I.E, Galaxy could have been improved by simply giving it to a few peoplem to play first and taking in their feedback. No such feelings with mario 64.

They should do an accurate unbiased review of the top 10 nintendo games by analysing each of the games aspects and comparing them. Not by basing them on how often it gets played at the office.

where the hell is Golden sun!!!

and there's no way mario kart wii deserves to be in the top ten double dash was better.

"Hmm, was it not the first Zelda game in 3D? Mario 64 was still a platformer where as OOT was Action Adventure, If you ask me the magic in OOT was much better than that of any other Zelda game, even if the minor problems of blocky arms, though I disagree with your other points, are fixed, a game doesnt need to be revolutionary to be good, look at Mario Kart Wii for instance Rolling Eyes"

I disagree with Twilight Princess being "perfection" in action/adventure. Sure it was a pretty awesome game, though I found little difficulty in it, you can fly through the game pretty easily, sure I enjoyed playing the game a lot, though there was really little sense of accomplishment for completing it for me, where as I was thrilled when I finished OOT.

The whole point of playing games is for fun, though I thought that ONM were judging games on more than just fun, to be labelled as one of the Top 10 games on a Nintendo Console ever, I was pretty sure that the general opinion was Super Mario Kart on the Snes was the best Mario kart, though that was after MKDS came out I didn't enjoy playing MkWii more than MKDS so I would not put MkWii in the top 10.

I said A Link to the Past, not Twilight Princess. I don't even think TP is one of the 10 best games on the Wii, let alone top 20 Nintendo games ever.

I wouldn't put Mario Kart Wii in my top ten either, but as I said, if they think it's fun more power to them. We should just be glad that Nintendo lists don't include any GTA garbage.

But I still stand by everything I say about Ocarina, I just don't think it's fun.

And just for the heck of it, my personal top 5.

5: A Link to the Past
    4: Super Mario Galaxy
    3: Donkey Kong Country 2
    2: Super Mario RPG
    1: Super Mario World

Thanks by the way, glad you liked my top games.

I can't remember where F-Zero X came, but it deserves top 20, as does Goldeneye.

But yeah, totally agree, nice list

  64. Enigmatic Man Wednesday 4th Mar 2009 at 13:29

You forgot Fire Emblem IV. I all honesty you guys have to have a Jp Wii at the office. So what gives?

Either way, regardless of 'opinion' it deserves a place in anyone's top 100.

  65. DBZFan355 Wednesday 4th Mar 2009 at 17:40

    whats everyone got against mkwii?

It has crippling balance issues, dodgy AI, a laggy and oversimplistic online interface and a boring battle mode. That's why.

Balance Issues? Dodgy AI? And most of all, Laggy Online? What the hell? The online is literally lagless. And over simplistic. Oh yeah, I forgot, getting your rump kicked by a Japanese guy is very simplistic. These arguments are all correct though. For people who own an early prototype of the game.

  66. DBZFan355 Wednesday 4th Mar 2009 at 21:35

Oh yeah, and one more complaint. MArio World 2 above Super Metroid. WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING! Sorry for my sudden outburst.

  67. UltimoLittleMac Wednesday 4th Mar 2009 at 22:12

"lol MKwii and galaxy in top ten"

lol Galaxy?? I suppose it's not like it's the most acclaimed 3D game in history and considered by many to be one of the absolute best games Nintendo has ever made.

OH wait a second IT IS!

"Oh yeah, and one more complaint. MArio World 2 above Super Metroid. WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING! Sorry for my sudden outburst. "

I don't see a problem here, both games are utterly fantastic and many consider them the best games in their respective genres. I love Yoshi's Island, but I wouldn't have minded if Super Metroid was above it. When games are that good it really doesn't matter which one is higher than the other.

"You forgot Fire Emblem IV. I all honesty you guys have to have a Jp Wii at the office. So what gives?

Either way, regardless of 'opinion' it deserves a place in anyone's top 100."

Fire Emblem has always been one of Nintendo's weaker series. And given the review scores and general opinion on most of the recent games, I don't see why it should make too many top 100 lists.

One more thing I have to say. People say the top ten is Mario fanboyish, and while I'm the last person to defend fanboyism of any kind I have to say, what did you expect? It's Official Nintendo Magazine, the key word is Nintendo. Seriously at least half of Nintendo's most memorable games have the name Super Mario in the tite, so really half of the top ten being Mario games should be expected.

Oh yeah, I forgot, getting your rump kicked by a Japanese guy is very simplistic. These arguments are all correct though. For people who own an early prototype of the game.

    Ok then, let me explain.

Balance Issues - The more powerful power-ups are way overpowered but more importantly, they are way too frequent. I've lost more races out of pure luck than skill - it was unlucky that some guy got a Blue Shell, nailed me 100m from the finish line and made me come in 4th. I should not be punished for being good at the game...it's unfair and so frustrating. If I get owned in Left 4 Dead or Red Alert 3 I know it's because I was outplayed, and that's fair enough, I don't get irritated. But most of the time in MKWii I lose out of luck, and it's really annoying.

Also - choosing a car is irrelevant because the only one you can choose if you want to beat the best racers/times is the Bowser Bike. Bikes turn easier, are faster on straights (read: anything that isn't a sharp bend), and heavy vehicles are faster and knock any other vehicle about 30 feet away. So why choose anything else if one is clearly superior?

Dodgy AI - The skill of the AI barely changes from 50cc to 150cc; all that does change is the frequency of the uber items. This is fake difficulty, not an actual change in challenge.

Laggy Online - Don't tell me you've seen a player drive off a cliff, only for them to reappear instantly in front of you? Or when players just suddenly appear out of nowhere? Yeah...that's lag. Makes aiming Green Shells a pain, as sometimes they seem to go right through them and miss, or you think you miss, then they get hit after a second of delay.

Oversimplistic online interface - There's no matchmaking system, it would seem. Even when I had a race score of about 9000 (it isn't now, because every time I earn enough points to get close I lose a race out of luck and lose 200 points for something I have no control over and repeat ad nauseam) I still got paired up with players who are clearly rubbish. If there is such a massive skill gap between players, why on earth do the good players get paired with the newbies? It's too easy for the good players, and demoralising for the new blood. Plus there's no option to add a friend (without using those god-awful friend codes, most games have just a button), chat or change game modes.

However, I will say this - online can be fun (when you're not losing out of luck) and the online system is miles better than Brawl's. And split-screen still owns; playing with 3 other mates when you're all half-drunk is a lot of fun. Perhaps I'm viewing the game in the wrong light; perhaps I should just have fun and not worry about ranking or whatever, but I can't stress enough how frustrating losing another race to a blue shell is.

Congratulations on bringing up the old "you dislike this game because you're s**t at it" argument, by the way.

The balance issues are hardly crippling, the online is great and battle mode is still pretty good. Maybe you just hate the series, or just suck.

"Mario Kart Wii sucks, I can't see why people love it."

Kingdom Hearts sucks, I can't see why people like it, let alone love it. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Ocarina of Time is dated, clunky and not that much fun, and it doesn't have anything truly "revolutionary" to justify why it makes it onto any top 5. Now A Link to the Past on the other hand, has withstood the test of time, still feels fluid and is a heckofalot of fun to play, and it was revolutionary, now THERE'S a top 5 worthy Zelda.

If you're going to complain about any game being consistently overrated, look no further than Ocarina.

  74. UltimoLittleMac Sunday 15th Mar 2009 at 22:10

    Where to begin with this...

"Also, I found mario 64 more addictive than Galaxy. "

Emphasis on the "I found" that is your opinion, but it seems most of these magazines and websites are starting to prefer Galaxy so tough luck.

"Another problem i have with Galaxy is that I couldn't help thinking 'OMG that part of the game could have simply been improved by a beta tests' whilst playing Galaxy. "

It hurt my head reading this sentence. The game is virtually flawless, you have no valid argument as to claim otherwise. Excellent level design, brilliant music, and perfect gameplay give the game major pathos for this list. You, on the other hand, have nothing to give your claim any credit. How could it be improved exactly? As if you could do better.

"I.E, Galaxy could have been improved by simply giving it to a few peoplem to play first and taking in their feedback. No such feelings with mario 64."

I think reading this made me go temporarily blind..
The feedback the game has received has been universally better than that of any other 3D game to date, no testers needed. No such feeling with Mario 64? With all due respects to that classic, THE CAMERA NEEDED FIXING.

I'm all for the classics getting the most praise (see my top five in a previous post), but if a game is great it's great, a la Galaxy. Don't try to shun it just because it hasn't been around as long as 64. Nostalgia is a good thing, but don't let it make your mind up for you.

  75. TreyTable Sunday 15th Mar 2009 at 22:47

Really, this list is flawed big time. Many of the games in the list are not made by Nintendo or by a division of Nintendo and some are not exclusive Nintendo games.

There is clearly too many problems going on here. You clearly don’t know a good game from a bad one so i'll simply tell you where you went wrong and believe me it was in quite a few place. I'm a nice guy so i've shown a blind eye to some of your fictional views.

    100. Star Wars: Rogue Leader
    79. Diddy Kong Racing
    63. Mario Kart: Double Dash
    55. GoldenEye 007
    52. Pokémon Red/Blue
    37. Perfect Dark
    30. New Super Mario Bros.
    21. Wii Sports
    17. Mario Kart 64
    16. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    15. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    13. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    1. Super Mario Bros.

I think these games have been judged incorrectly and i think you know that to. These games defined Nintendo or better yet, kept it going. Your measley scores have tarnished their reputations and i think you need to rework your list or remove it altogether. These games should be listed in the 1-20 category not 1-100. However where OFT and SMB are concerned i'm unsure of which order to put them in as they basicly define Nintendo and its history so i'm not really dissapointed there but this list is appauling and something needs to be done about it.

  77. yoshi95 Sunday 5th Apr 2009 at 16:58

Zelda Ocarina Of Time should not be second in the 100 greatest games ever because it was alot easier than Twilight Princess and the controls a quite fiddly, 15th at least

How F-Zero X got higher than GX idk. How Mario Kart Wii got higher then any other Mario kart game (maybe higher then super cirut), idk. How Brawl beat Melee with it'
s slower combat, addition of tripping and crappy online play idk. and how an 8-bit game that no one now a days will pick up or let alone play for more then 5 minutes got number 1 tells me something. we need some new blood deciding this crap. if your over 40, please keep your mouth shut in this sort of thing. no, 35 at most.

In my opinion, OOT should have been first as it's definitely at least one of the best games ever made, and in my opinion the best.

And yes. Be quiet everybody, MKWii completely desserves to be on that list, even if it's only for getting rid of god damn snaking!

Fire Emblem has always been one of Nintendo's weaker series. And given the review scores and general opinion on most of the recent games, I don't see why it should make too many top 100 lists.

what do you mean general opinion on the recent games? 99% of the people thats ive read that have played Radiant Dawn are addicted to it, have you played any of the games? I find it unlikely.

They have completely left out my two favourite series that are exclusive to Nintendo, Fire Emblem and Battalion Wars. Both BW games were given scores upward of 85% and the Fire Emblems (other than RD which was criminally given a poor score because it was too hard. Aww, Chandra, was there a bit too much thinking for you to do?) were given upwards of 80%. Also, I think most 3D games are better than 2D games; as it adds an extra dimension to gameplay.

    One more thing...

    TETRIS? WTF

Not the top 100 games released in Europe.

ONM you suck, how you can possibly put Wii Sports as a better game than Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker, I will never know.

    Wii Sports:
Caused non-gamers to start playing games? Yes.

    Revolutionary? Arguably.

Is this what determines a good game? No. Especially not revolutionary. Any games which takes the revolutionary game and improves on it is the better game.

  87. seanh96 Saturday 11th Jul 2009 at 12:11

i know this is your opinion but this is a terrible list. mario kart wii shouldn't even be top 50 let alone top 5. wii sports shouldn't even be on the list at all. final fantasy 6 and chrono trigger should be in the top 20 and ocarina of time should be first. the most frustating thing about this list is that you put mario kart wii ahead of super mario 64 which should of been in the top 3.

This post is ghastly on so many levels.

First off, if 99% of people you know obsess over Radiant Dawn, they must be obsessed anime fanboys. The general public gave the game scores in the 6ish range on average, only total anime nerds actually like Fire Emblem. You'll never hear a real gamer say "Fire Emblem is one of the best games ever made."

Second. 2D games vs. 3D games. 2D games win by a country mile. There's no comparison. Not that I'm saying 3D games are bad, but there are a lot more timelessly endearing 2D ones and only a handful of truly timeless 3D ones.

And finally, Tetris is every bit deserving of being in the top five. Not only is it one of the absolute most important games, but it's also one of the most timeless.

You sir, have no right playing video games. Why not go watch one of those generic animes I'm sure you like so much.

  89. UltimoLittleMac Wednesday 15th Jul 2009 at 09:41

"And did Tales Of Symphonia actually get into this list, I can't remember?"

Who cares! That game epitomizes "generic RPG."

" How Brawl beat Melee with it'

You sir are the absolute biggest moron the video game world has ever had the displeasure to know.

First off, Melee is the WORST entry in the Smash Bros. series. Bar none. Melee took out any skill and strategy from the original and replaced it with frantic button mashing, and the only "skill" in Melee was one's skill in glitch exploiting.

And what was up with the character lineup? How did the likes of Dr. Mario, Marth and Roy make it in before more iconic characters like Wario, King Dedede or even Pit (although I don't like his new design).

Brawl brought back the skill that the original Smash Bros. required, and it added more depth and content then one could imagine. Sure the online could've been better, but playing against friends online is perfectly fine. There is no way on this or any other planet that Melee could be better then Brawl... Except the planet fanboy.

And what you said about Super Mario Bros. is the foulest act of video game blasphemy I can recall. So no one these days would pick it up to play it huh? Then why is it the second best selling Virtual Console game of all time (being beat only by Super Mario Bros. 3, another 8-bit platformer)?
Super Mario Bros. is as timeless as gaming gets, it is every bit deserving of the number one spot (though I myself would pick Super Mario World).

And I like how you say anyone over 35 should keep their mouth shut, so maybe we should go to that kiddy playground you spend so much time at and get some of your 12-year old friends to pick their favorites, maybe then you'll be happy.

Now please, do the world a favor and shut up, and never pick up another controller for the rest of your life, you clearly have absolutely no right playing video games.

super mario bros at top???? I haven't played it, but i really don't like super mario bros 3. It's too hard for starters.
Super smash bros brawl should be top and bomberman blast in top 10

  91. LEGEND MARIOID Saturday 25th Jul 2009 at 14:47

A lot of hyper depressed, hardcoreist snobs on this thread eh.

Anyway, a VERY DECENT TOP 10. SUPER MARIO GALAXY should be in the top 3 to 10 abso-fracking-lutely. As should Mario Kart Wii ffs.

  92. Exodist Monday 31st Aug 2009 at 11:33

This list is absolutely terrible. You guys really screwed up with this one.

  93. TheAlex Sunday 25th Oct 2009 at 17:06

Two things that stood out for me; Perfect Dark should be much higher...and if you think Blast Corps is a forgotten classic, how about Terranigma? Possibly the best SNES RPG released in the UK!

I also think some of the Wii titles are placed too highly.

  94. Light Yagami Wednesday 4th Nov 2009 at 13:52

    The placing itself isn't terrible.

ONM placed 100 of the best Nintendo games into a list so you could all look back at some of the classics, the games that revolutionized gaming, and the strongest, most graphically pleasing games today - and realise just what Nintendo has produced over the last couple of decades.

I like how I could go through the list and think "Yeah that game was awesome, I might play through it again" or "I haven't played that one before, I should try it out" but I do think that it was a bad idea to list them in that way. You can't compare the Nes to the Gamecube, or the Gameboy to the WII. If anything I think it would have been more suitable to make a top 20 for each console and leave it at that. It would at least calm down the majority of people here who have posted.

    Just my opinion ^_^

"And did Tales Of Symphonia actually get into this list, I can't remember?"

Who cares! That game epitomizes "generic RPG."

" How Brawl beat Melee with it'
s slower combat, addition of tripping and crappy online play idk. and how an 8-bit game that no one now a days will pick up or let alone play for more then 5 minutes got number 1 tells me something. we need some new blood deciding this crap. if your over 40, please keep your mouth shut in this sort of thing. no, 35 at most."

You certainly know how to state your mind, LOL.

Anyway, MKWii was good, but not THAT good. I found it good for getting round with your mates for a laugh, but I didn't do a lot of 1-player.

...I'm happy of this listing. Especially the Top 10. However, Brawl should be on the Top 10, replacing Mario Kart Wii, because the DS version is better (coz you could snake). All it's better at is having Online (Good Online) and the Blue Falcon included.

On the No.1 spot...is a difficult one to place. OoT is definitely the Best Game Ever...and the only game that could beat OoT, is Super Mario Bros.

  98. Rainbow Yoshi Tuesday 9th Mar 2010 at 09:28

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was quite revolutionary. I did not find Dark Aether tedious in any way.

I will post my top 20 Nintendo games soon.

  99. Loopydoodle Tuesday 8th Jun 2010 at 13:38

At the risk of becoming extremely unpopular very quickly I'm going to give my opinion. I HATE Super Mario Bros. You can't save the game, the graphics are dated, the controls are frustrating as he never stops when I want him too and he only has 3 lives then you have to start all over again. I feel the only reason that the game is included is because of Mario favouritism, so how it won I have no idea. Yes, it was influential but so was Pokemon Red/Blue and Donkey Kong yet they were right the way down near the 50's. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal should have been on the list. I played Super Mario Sunshine which was better if confusing.
Nobody can honestly say that they would rather have Super Mario Bros. as opposed to Galaxy or Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver. This is just more typical Mario favouritism. No matter what pokemon, zelda, metroid or any other game does it will never beat Mario. I think its time that Nintendo got themselves a new mascot. Bye bye Mario!

  100. zapper01 Monday 5th Jul 2010 at 20:47

my top 2 are wind waker and brawl. But seriously, you rated twilight princess better than resi, but put it in a lower position? What the duck?

  101. charljenky29 Friday 22nd Oct 2010 at 14:31

There is clearly too many problems going on here. You clearly don’t know a good game from a bad one so i'll simply tell you where you went wrong and believe me it was in quite a few place. I'm a nice guy so i've shown a blind eye to some of your fictional views.

    100. Star Wars: Rogue Leader
    79. Diddy Kong Racing
    63. Mario Kart: Double Dash
    55. GoldenEye 007
    52. Pokémon Red/Blue
    37. Perfect Dark
    30. New Super Mario Bros.
    21. Wii Sports
    17. Mario Kart 64
    16. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    15. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    13. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    1. Super Mario Bros.

I think these games have been judged incorrectly and i think you know that to. These games defined Nintendo or better yet, kept it going. Your measley scores have tarnished their reputations and i think you need to rework your list or remove it altogether. These games should be listed in the 1-20 category not 1-100. However where OFT and SMB are concerned i'm unsure of which order to put them in as they basicly define Nintendo and its history so i'm not really dissapointed there but this list is appauling and something needs to be done about it.

You used the wrong word. It should be "... I think you know that [i]too."

  102. system_failure01 Thursday 9th Jun 2011 at 20:00

its a terrible list, ONM. i stopped buying NOM when it was changed to ONM for the Wii, because i didn't get a Wii, but i've read this just now and I have to say, its not very good. NOM UK did a better top 100 nintendo games ever in September 2003 issue.

Really, the problems are manifold with this list. You seem to decide that 'better' visuals and 'quicker' gameplay, 'more' options and modes and 'amazing' online play are points that edge out newer games from older ones. You put Waverace 64 ahead of Goldeneye, claiming GE007 "isnt as good as you remember it" yet Waverace "still looks great." By this logic, Waverace 64 also has aged and doesn't look good now. So Waverace on Gamecube overtook it, in your list, i think, but whatever.

this is only one example. Also Majoras Mask and GE007 and Pokemon Red/Blue are shamefully far down here. You are obviously catering to a younger and/or more ignorant audience and don't even want to introduce them to older games, by the looks of it. You are looking at the games now with retrospect and lambasting an older game for not having online play or wondreful 3D graphics. This is utterly missing the point. In that case call this a "retrospective" top 100, because it's not a definitive Top 100. You have to, to be definitive, judge the games based on how they were at the time. Just because Mario 64 was 3D isnt what was amazing, it was that it made this jump so wonderfully, how good it was. It's the gameplay that matters. Goldeneye 007, at the time, and for years afterwards (now ppl are playing CoD and other games) but for many years remained THE fps game. Multiplayer modes of GE are stuff of absolute legend and the fact it was actually a credible movie tie-in game was really cool. At the time it was stunningly good, whereas Mario Galaxy, which recieved good reviews but plays boringly, doesnt have that Mario 64/ Super mario bros. magic, I mean to put that 2nd or 3rd is a joke. At the time it had no kind of impact that GE007 , Mario Bros, OoTime, Perfect D, Pokemon Red, Super Metroid/Metroid Prime, FZero/FZX, Banjo Kazooie. Hell, Turok 2 had a bigger impact.

    Seriously guys... this is unimpressive.

i feel maybe GE007 is rated so low (55th! Honestly) bcos possibly you guys went back to play it and found your skills had totally gone/weren't there to begin with. Nobody likes a sore loser, but that is what you'll be after I totally kick your hides at GE any time, in any state of sobriety.

    thanks and bye

I'm glad that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time are in the top 10 but REALLY?! Come on! The Legend of Zelda: Twillight Princess had to be in the top ten! the amazing gameplay and the plot says it all! Even the items you could get in it were quite good too.

Ladies and gentlemen who finalised the list of the best games, sorry but you are all terribly wrong  :(

  104. benjymc Sunday 8th Apr 2012 at 18:54

It's a little frustrating when such old news appears in "top stories" on the home page because it was bumped :|

  106. Tanrei Monday 9th Apr 2012 at 07:59

Super Mario Bros. isn't the best Nintendo game ever. It just came out at the right place at the right time.

  107. ThePokekid78 Monday 9th Apr 2012 at 08:16

Wait, so how come this top 100 list is different to the one that was in the magazine??

    Because it's a different list...

I thought this would be an up to date list but this has been bumped

  110. EpicMario Tuesday 10th Apr 2012 at 15:42

MARIO GALAXY IS BETTER THAN MARIO BROS

  111. BrychanCymru Tuesday 10th Apr 2012 at 16:12

No way does mario bros deserve 1st. even nintendo said mario bros 3 was a giant step up from it. Ocarina of time is probably the best nintendo game ever, or maybe the best game ever. it's certainly the best game i've ever played and i've got around 20 games consoles. I play on my pikachu n64 and i can't stop. One of the buttons have gotten stuck so i need to get it repaired because i play it so much. All im saying is that zelda is way better than mario

  112. Xenobladeperson Sunday 29th Apr 2012 at 09:50

I know it's the 2009 list, but Xenoblade should still be 1

  113. fluggy2003 Sunday 29th Apr 2012 at 13:48

Absolute drivel!!! Saying Mario Bros is "THE BEST" Nintendo game really undermines the effort Nintendo have made to a) better the original and b) make other games that are "infinitley" better as well. Mario Bros 3 and Mario World are both vastly superior, ie, BETTER!!! This should be pretty obvious to anyone who has played the series from the start and to say Nintendo, with 30 years of video game experience, have never bettered it is not only wrong but also highly insulting to the point of idiocy! By all means, make a list of top 100 most influential games and put Mario Bros near the top. I'm a 35 year old gamer and yes, I had a NES when I was a kid and, yes, I loved Super Mario Bros...... at the time. But times move on, games have got bigger and better. Its like making a greatest games of all formats list and put Centipede or Manic Miner at no.1. . . absolutley ridiculous, which to be honest, is no more or less downright daft than putting the original Mario Bros at no.1!!!

  114. GuitarHero Sunday 29th Apr 2012 at 14:14

I know it's the 2009 list, but Xenoblade should still be 1

That makes no sense whatsoever. It isn't that good a game anyway...

  115. NintyHippo Sunday 29th Apr 2012 at 18:33

This list is from 2009. It's out of date.

  116. alexkinch Sunday 29th Apr 2012 at 20:49

    a good mix of games.
