Top 10 best NES games

The 30th anniversary celebrations continue with this selection of the top NES games

We're celebrating the 30th anniversary of Famicom this week on ONM. We've already told you how the console saved videogaming in 1983 while Chris Scullion shared his first NES memory and now it's time to to reveal your top 10 best NES games of all time.

Of course, this celebration has been going on for over six months as Nintendo released Balloon Fight for the Wii U Virtual Console back in January for just 30p. This was the first in a series of budget retro games that have been re-released to celebrate the console's 30th anniversary.

Since then, we've been given the chance to download Metroid, Punch-Out, Kirby's Adventure, Mario & Yoshi and Donkey Kong for 30p each but how many of them make the top 10? Well, we asked you to vote on the ONM forum and ONM's Facebook page and this is what you came up with.

10. Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus has an interesting history as it was created using the same game engine as Metroid and was released on the same day as Samus Aran's debut game. It even featured music from the same composer.

While Samus Aran went on to enjoy a successful career on SNES and GameCube, Pit returned on Game Boy Color in 1991 only to go missing for 16 years when he made a comeback in Smash Bros Brawl.

For years we head rumours about the return of Kid Icarus and the fact that Sakurai chose to include him in Brawl just shows that the fans were missing Pit. It's easy to see why. This cult classic has challenged gamers for generations as Pit, a young angel imprisoned in the Underworld by the evil Medusa, breaks out of prison with the help of Palutena The Goddess Of Light.

Attempting to find and defeat Medusa is a tough job as the screen scrolls upwards, meaning any fall leads to instant death. Unforgiving but unforgettable.

You say: The original rage game. It seemed so easy at the beginning (oh, I can withstand numerous hits and attack slow enemies at distance) but about 20 seconds later you were sneaking past deadly enemies and jumping onto platforms that were impossibly narrow. Nothing, NOTHING ever came as close to this until the Dark Souls series and you know what? Kid Icarus is harder.. Ruairí Coughlan

I didn't know Mario Allstars was out for the Super Nintendo.

I didn't know Mario Allstars was out for the Super Nintendo.

Yeah, that's the original. The WII version is a remake of the SNES... Actually, no not a remake, just a port!

Yippee Super Mario Bros 3 wins!

If I'm honest Super Mario Bros. would have been top of my list, just for being on of the most legendary videogames of all time, but seeing as SMB3 did nothing but improve on everything that was good about the original I can see why it's forst here.

    But seriously? SMB2?

No Street Gangs . . sob sob. I can't argue with the calibre of the top 10 but its a shame it wasn't a top 20.

The only game not fitting on that list is Super Mario Bros 2 (USA). Every other game, all is fair.

Why Battletoads isn't on this list I'll have no idea. There you are, swap out SMB2 for Battletoads and all is good. Actually no... Blaster Master is right up there, as is Batman: Return of the Joker, and then you've got RC Pro Am, Wizards & Warriors, Super C, Ninja Gaiden...

Yeah, aside from Super Mario 3 being the undisputed best NES game out there, there're too many that can easily feature in many different Top 10's.

First two Nintendo games make up the top 3 in the all-format charts this week, then Duck Hunt is voted better than Mega Man 2.
    The world has gone insane.

Mega Man 3 was better than 2. It had everything that made 2 good (except for the Metal Blades) and more, plus you could actually slide. The Dr Wily fights were also much better than in 2.

few of my faves: metal gear, rc pro am, solar jetman, battletoads, zelda 2, catlevania 3, rad gravity, probotector, punch out, double dragon 2 and batman

SMB3 is without a shaddow of a doubt, THE GREATEST VIDEO GAME EVER!!!
Totally agree with its place on the list

I had a different list on my site, but Mario 3 is still great!

Okay, so I agree with Super Mario 3, but Ducktails? Kid icarus? Super Mario 2? Even Metroid is a little odd. Metroid got good with time, but started off pretty badly.

I can't understand why Blue Shadow is not on the list, either.

    Good list.

Suggs for best games /not/ on the list.

In terms of /fun + time played/ I agree with /RC Pro AM/ and I'd add /Dragon Warrior/ which came /free/ with a subscription to Nintendo Power magazine which was the coolest give-away/present for subscribing to a video-game magazine ever.

but most of all I'd add /Blaster Master/

I would accept it taking the #1 place in a "Cult Fave NES games Top 10" because what I remember about this game was that

    1. To those that knew of it, it was really famous and/or loved.

(and/or people were frustrated in a good way over how hard it was to complete. ie. it provided a great sense of accomplishment when you did finally complete it heh)

    2. But that though it was famous - as famous as SMB to those that had heard of it - a lot of people hadn't heard of it.

So I can see it being a sort of "Cult" fave for that reason, tho I'd wager that'll always seem odd to anyone who played the game with friends, where it seemed a very high profile famous game.

or to quote Monty Python, "In the area in which I am known, I am in fact very well known" heh.

Of course that area in which it was known, was really a cult'ish small'ish audience as compared to the larger NES gaming audience.

Still amazes me that someone always has to mention it when it fails to make a top 10 list tho, but it does seem to get mentioned in the comments section of Top 10's more and more often these days.

It deserves to be up there too as a great NES game imo, because it was difficult at times but a lot of fun to play with multiple playing fields in an expansive world with a great soundtrack. Still boot up level 4 just to listen to the addictive strange music.

    Found it here :)

I think it's impossible to narrow down this list to just 10 games. There are so many! But this is a good list, a bit predictable, but then again you missed Tetris.

    Super Mario 3

Sorry but Metroid shouldn't be on there. I'm a huge Metroid fan but it started off badly. It only turned good with Super Metroid for the SNES. Most of the other entries are accurate.

Whaaaat! Super Mario Bros. 2 really? I hated that game! compared to the original it sucked!!!

These are all quite cool games, i like the list.
    i think i have played the most of them (i guess i´m a geek :D ) .
My favourite is Chrono trigger. I love the music and the fact that i have played it a lot but still can´t beat all the badguys by myself but sometimes need to find a help from a walkthrough to kill bosses.
Super mario rules too :) !!!

Solid list! clearly duck hunt is above mega man 2 because it is 1) a memorable game that people remember fondly and 2) mega man 1, 3 and 4 have eaten little chunks out of mega man 2's vote.... Still chuckling at the notion that mega man 2 is one of the hardest platformers ever..... I thought it was overall quite easy (even on difficult) and no where near kid icarus or mega man 1 (no save, yellow devil, no E tanks, no vehicles, hardly any one ups)
