15 amazing Pokemon facts and secrets

Pokemon week begins with another round of facts. How many did you know?

10 amazing Pokemon facts, handpicked from the Did you know thread on ONM's Pokemon forum was where we started our wonderful trivia journey, a journey that has since spanned many of Nintendo's franchises such as Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby and Mario. To celebrate the release of Pokemon Black and White 2, it seems appropriate to return with another selection of interesting things you may not have known about the world of the pocket monsters.

1. Capsule Monsters

Like the loveable monsters themselves, the original idea for Pokemon evolved and transformed. Satoshi Tajiri's concept for Pokémon manifested itself in a manga named Capsule Monsters. Within its pages, you can see the birth of many of the ideas that have since become so familiar to gamers everywhere, such as interactions with other trainers on routes, the shape of Kanto and Pokeballs.

Perhaps more interesting is the presence of some early Pokemon designs. The front cover of the manga depicts an oddly familiar reptilian creature bounding towards similarly familiar humanoid creature. These would eventually become Nidorino and Gengar, who, as every Pokemon fan should know, are famous for appearing in the opening sequence to Pokemon Red. That's exactly why these two seemingly random Pokemon appear together... to pay homage to that original manga concept.

This is pretty cool. I liked the absol one.

  2. mrgameandwatch Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 07:27

cool!i didn`t know most of them!

  3. shy guy 64 Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 09:32

    knew most of it

Definitely the most interesting facts around, that last one in particular. I remember being shocked when I realised I had mates as tall as a Tyranitar (6'07") and also that Charizard stands at 5'07", a Furret on hind legs stands at around 5'11"! ...Yeah. You're gonna think twice about messing with a Furret now aren't you.

Also, to anyone who followed the original Did you know? thread, can anyone remember a post where someone complied a series of incredibly unlikely events that had more chance of happening than being able to encounter a particular spinda (e.g. certain spot pattern, shiny, certain IVs etc.)? I remember that was probably the best Pokemon fact I'd ever read.

  6. Commandervideo Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 10:18

I only knew no.10 (Rhydon) the rest were amazing though

  7. MartinIsAwesome Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 10:37

I only knew a couple of these.
Like the Flying Dodou fact, I always found it weird when a Pokemon can learn a move, particularly HMs, despite it's type or physical properties, like Rhydon and Tauros being able to Surf. Stranger yet the fact that Scyther can't learn Fly despite being a Flying type with big ol' wings.

OK, so Parasect is pretty creepy, but I think Shedinja goes one further. "Peering into its back is said to steal one's spirit." You LOSE YOUR SOUL. And what exactly are you looking at every time you use Shedinja?

  9. Wiimote Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 13:28

Only knew 2 of these the Absol one & the Rhydon one. Good read though.

You think Shedinja's creepy, just look at the entries for the Litwick family.

THE SOUL AND SPIRIT ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! The soul is the force that begins with you and ends with you. It does not change until you die, when it simply fades away. The SPIRIT, on the other hand, begins with you and ditches you when you die. The spirit is your personality; your likes and dislikes. I believe when you die, the spirit heads up to heaven or down to ... Chapter 7-1 in Super Paper Mario.

knew all of them except for the three head dragon thingy one.

  13. Pyron12 Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 15:29

I knew the drunk old man and the Absol fact. The first one and last ones were interesting.
The Parasect one I couldn't disagree more. What about Banette from Gen 3?An abandoned plush doll became this Pokémon. They are said to live in garbage dumps and wander about in search of the children that threw them away. - Pokemon Emerald Dex text. Seriously does that scream creepiest or what? Secondly it's appearance is incredibly DISTURBING! (pardon the caps)

  14. koopa_kicker Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 16:02

Ok, but I think we can agree Parasect is the creepiest non ghost type Poke'mon though. Being realistic, wouldn't all of its personality and happiness towards you suddenly change as it evolves?

  15. superthingymabob Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 16:06

I knew the ones about the old man, doduo and dodrio, rhydon, and pikachurin.

Also, you know how articuno zapdos and moltres have uno, dos and tres in their names? Did you know that deino, zweilous and hydreigon have the german letters for one, two and three in them? dEINo, ZWEIlous and hyDREIgon.

Even worse, yanmega's HGSS pokedex entry says "This six-legged Pokémon is easily capable of transporting an adult in flight. The wings on its tail help it stay balanced." and it can't learn fly!

Number 10 would also describe why I once caught a Missingno. and it just turned into a rhydon. Thats because Missingno. is number 0 (as it is a glitch) abd Rhydon is No1. It was really weird it didn't evolve or anything it just had Rhydons cry and then his sprite and then I had its pokedex entry.

I don't know about the parasect one. While it is pretty creepy you can't forget about hypno: "It carries a pendulum-like device. There once was an incident in which it took away a child it hypnotized." "When it is very hungry, it puts humans it meets to sleep, then it feasts on their dreams." Avoid eye contact if you come across one. It will try to put you to sleep by using its pendulum."

Metagross is disturbing too: " When hunting, this Pokémon pins the prey to the ground under its massive body. It then eats the helpless victim using the large mouth on its stomach."

Always did find that absol one pretty interesting....what is it about them..
also the mew one is pretty interesting.....nice to see overarching story symbols in pokemon sometimes.

Frilish/Jellicent are another couple of creepy ones: They paralyze prey with poison, then drag them down to their liars 5 miles below the surface

Jellicent: The fate of the ships and crew that wander into Jellicent's habitat: all sunkern, all lost, all vanished

  21. Kirby8 Monday 8th Oct 2012 at 23:16

Knew quite a lot of them. All interesting though and always great to read!

  22. Misanthropy Tuesday 9th Oct 2012 at 00:12

  24. torterratrainer Tuesday 9th Oct 2012 at 06:38

    articuno- uno - 1
    zapdous- dous - 2 (spanish)
    moltres - tres - 3

then i thought about Pokemon BW (1)

    deino - ein - 1
    zweilos - zwei - 2 (german)
    hydreigon - drei - 3

i didnt even look anything up for the dragons :D!

  25. m_lockier Tuesday 9th Oct 2012 at 12:20

Well the doduo fly one goes without saying as does the Rhydon one.

Speaking of height, you assume Nidoking & Nidoqueen would be huge but from my memories of Pokemon Stadium (going back 14 years) thery were tiny.

  26. VinceLovesToast Sunday 21st Oct 2012 at 20:24

  27. parasky Sunday 11th Nov 2012 at 08:04

I knew almost all of them already, but I could see these facts being interesting to newer players.

  28. ThePokekid78 Sunday 2nd Dec 2012 at 10:00

Dat moment when you realise...Furret is bigger than Charizard...

The even more disturbing thing about the parasect fact is that there is fungi the take over crabs and control the half dead crab

  35. pikachu101 Wednesday 1st May 2013 at 09:15

  37. ProfPikachu Tuesday 4th Jun 2013 at 18:26

    These are brilliant!! :D

  38. Roibeard Sunday 16th Jun 2013 at 22:26

I knew that truck mew rumour was fake but I had to be sure myself and to prove that lying kid in school wrong. So traded a Pokemon with cut to my second version and completed the game without going on the SS Ann, went back surfed over , used strength against it and nothing. Never was I so sad to be right.

  39. ubergamer1 Saturday 4th Jan 2014 at 12:49

    I wanted a Mew

    :x

  40. hodori0719 Sunday 6th Apr 2014 at 15:43

NUMBER 8 IS NOT TRUE.

i don't know exactly when it started, possibly the 3rd generation, but in the official guide for platinum, it used the term 'shiny'.
i know they used things like 'red gyarados' and 'pikachu colored pichu' but they still had the term shiny.
