One of the things I admire most about Obata is how he can make dynamic scenes out of seemingly dull and lifeless scenarios. He creates pages where characters don't move a muscle and yet you still feel like they've bounced to Jupiter and back. To me, where this talent shines the most is when he manages to prop up the MANY drooping scenes in Baukuman. The majority of the story is ridiculously predictable and yet his artwork somehow convinced me that something unexpected and exciting just might happen if I continued to read. |

Thanks for the interviews despite it being short, but it'll do for me, ANN.

Yeah - the average length of time we're given at convention interviews is 20-30 minutes (and even those feel short), this one was 15. We'll always take these opportunities but we're trying to arrange longer interviews with talent via email. |

I LOL'd upon learning his editor is named Yoshida. I know it's a common name, but wasn't that the name of Hiramaru's editor in Bakuman?

Bakuman's Koji Yoshida is actually based on this guy, and most of the editors who show up in that series have real-life namesakes. The real Yoshida looks pretty similar to his manga counterpart, as you can see here. |

Thanks for that! He's certainly got the hair. Now I wonder if he's as devious in RL... |

Hanasaku Iroha the Movie: Home Sweet Home [Premium Edition] Sub.Blu-Ray
anime
Even at only 66 minutes, it's a fully-realized film designed to serve as a complement to the original work, and it does that job very well.
― The Hanasaku Iroha series was a personal favorite back in 2011, so any anime expansion of its franchise is a welcome one. This 86 minute movie, subtitled Home Sweet Home, is neither a summative movie nor a stand-alone production; while newcomers to the franchis...
Answerman - Rabbit Ears

Lots of TV questions this week, from a TV network that came and went, to another TV network few fans know exists. Plus, flip phones in anime, and why Western fans don't care for vintage characters.
― I went to a friend's band's concert last night. It was a Wednesday, and they didn't go on until nearly midnight. It was fun to see them play, but halfway through their set I sat off to the side, head-in...
Sengoku Collection Sub.DVD
anime
Sengoku Collection is a series very easy to dismiss on first impression, but its stories have the capacity to pleasantly surprise even those who are not Japanese history buffs, however.
― Sengoku Collection was originally a mobile social networking game created by Konami in 2010 and operated through the Mobage portal. As a result, it should come as no surprise that the anime adaptation has only a thi...

The Evil Within
games
It's hard to blame Shinji Mikami for going back to the well, especially when everything else, from Gears of War to The Last of Us, has spent the past ten years stripping Resident Evil 4 to its bones.
― The Evil Within introduces its first enemy in a perfect recreation of Resident Evil's iconic zombie reveal, as if it wants to be certain you know it is a Shinji Mikami game. This is a game with a lot o...
Interview: Takeshi Obata

A few questions for illustrator extraordinaire Takeshi Obata, the man behind the incredible art of Death Note, Hikaru no Go, All You Need is Kill and more.
― If you haven't heard of Takeshi Obata, chances are you have seen his work: he is an illustrator and mangaka, usually working with writers to help tell stories. He has worked on Hikaru no Go, as well as Death Note, Bakuman, and most recently the ...
